Association between mistreatment of women during childbirth and symptoms suggestive of postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a common condition in the pregnancy and postpartum cycle. The development of this condition is multifactorial and can be influenced by previous traumas. This study sought to verify whether there is an association between having been exposed to mistreatment during childbirth and presenting symptoms suggestive of postpartum depression. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study, with the inclusion of 287 women without complications in childbirth, randomly selected from two maternity hospitals of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, in 2016. Four weeks after delivery

Clinician-reported childbirth outcomes, patient-reported childbirth trauma, and risk for postpartum depression.

Childbirth trauma is common and increases risk for postpartum depression (PPD). However, we lack brief measures to reliably identify individuals who experience childbirth trauma and who may be at greater prospective risk for PPD. To address this gap, we used data from a racially diverse prospective cohort (n=1082). We collected survey data during pregnancy and at 12 weeks postpartum, as well as clinician-reported data from medical records. A new three-item measure of patient-reported childbirth trauma was a robust and independent risk factor for PPD, above and beyond other known risk factors f

Various mentalizing concepts in mothers with postpartum depression, comorbid anxiety, and personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mentalization is defined as the human capacity to reflect upon one's own or others' behaviors in terms of underlying mental states and intentions. Several concepts of mentalizing exist, which differ in content, assessment, and clinical prediction. AIMS: The present study examines the relationship between the three main concepts of mentalizing, namely, reflective functioning (RF), parental reflective functioning (PRF), and Mind-Mindedness (MM), in mothers with postpartum depression. It was hypothesized that mentalizing concepts differ in their convergent and divergent variance, as

Examining early structural and functional brain alterations in postpartum depression through multimodal neuroimaging.

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects approximately 1 in 10 women after childbirth. A thorough understanding of a preexisting vulnerability to PPD will likely aid the early detection and treatment of PPD. Using a within-sample association, the study examined whether the brain's structural and functional alterations predict the onset of depression. 157 euthymic postpartum women were subjected to a multimodal MRI scan within the first 6 days of childbirth and were followed up for 12 weeks. Based on a clinical interview 12 weeks postpartum, participants were classified as mentally healthy or having

Healthcare resource utilization and costs associated with postpartum depression among commercially insured households.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the economic burden of postpartum depression (PPD) that accrues to commercially insured households in the year following childbirth. METHODS: Administrative claims data from OptumHealth Care Solutions (2009-2016) were used to identify households that included women identified with PPD per the algorithm and propensity score-matched comparison households of women who were not identified with PPD or a history of depression after childbirth. Study outcomes included direct total all-cause medical and pharmaceutical costs during the first year following childbirth and number

Childbirth and symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety: a prospective birth cohort study.

We investigated associations between aspects of childbirth and elevated postpartum symptoms of depression and anxiety. We employed secondary analysis of perinatal data (N = 4657-4946) from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) birth cohort. Multivariable logistic regression models (adjusted for covariates) examined predictors of elevated symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety. Predictors included the following: type of delivery (normal physiological vs. interventive non-physiological), immediate postpartum complications, and maternal perception of the recent birth

Increased glutamate levels in the medial prefrontal cortex in patients with postpartum depression.

The medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) is a key brain area in depressive symptomatology; specifically, glutamate (Glu) has been reported to play a significant role in major depression (MD) in this area. MPFC Glu levels are sensitive to ovarian hormone fluctuations and pregnancy and the postpartum period are associated with the most substantial physiological alterations of female hormones. It is therefore logical to measure MPFC Glu levels in women with postpartum depression (PPD). Using in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) at a field strength of 3 T, we acquired single-voxel spectra from

Role of estradiol withdrawal in 'anhedonic' sucrose consumption: a model of postpartum depression.

Previously, a hormone-simulated pregnancy (HSP), and the subsequent 'postpartum' withdrawal in estradiol has been shown to precipitate depressive-like behaviours in the forced swim test in female rats. In this study, we used the HSP and 'postpartum' withdrawal to investigate the impact on sucrose consumption, a model of anhedonia. Rats were assigned to "postpartum", "postpartum"+EB (estradiol benzoate), "postpartum"+IMI (imipramine; a tricyclic antidepressant), "postpartum"+DPN (diarylpropionitrile; an ERbeta agonist), or ovariectomized (OVX) controls and OVX+IMI treatments. All "postpartum" g

Antepartum and postpartum exposure to maternal depression: different effects on different adolescent outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is considered a major public health problem that conveys risk to mothers and offspring. Yet PPD typically occurs in the context of a lifelong episodic illness, and its putative effects might derive from the child's exposure to other episodes, in pregnancy or later childhood. The aim of the study is to test two hypotheses: (1) that the effects of PPD on adolescent outcomes are partly explained by antepartum depression (APD) and (2) that the effects of APD and PPD are both explained by later exposure to the mother's depression. METHOD: A random sample of

Depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period in adolescent and adult Portuguese mothers.

OBJECTIVE: To study prevalence as well as risk factors for pregnancy and postpartum depression in a sample of adolescent and adult Portuguese mothers. METHODS: The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was administered to 108 (54 adult and 54 adolescent) Portuguese women at 24-36 weeks of pregnancy and at 2-3 months postpartum. RESULTS: Rates for EPDS > 12 are high during the 3(rd) trimester of pregnancy (18.5%) and at 2-3 months postpartum (17.6%), and not significantly different between these two periods; more than 1/4 of the sample (27.8%) had an EPDS > 12 before or after delivery.

Adult metachromatic leukodystrophy: disorganized schizophrenia-like symptoms and postpartum depression in 2 sisters.

We describe the cases of 2 sisters with adult metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). Whereas one sister presented with disorganized schizophrenia-like symptoms as the initial manifestation of MLD, the other remained symptom free except for a 4-week period of postpartum depression. In both patients, there was some residual activity of leukocyte arylsulfatase A (1.7% and 5.5% of normal), and a marked increase in urinary sulfatides was present, as measured by tandem mass spectrometry. An arylsulfatase A pseudodeficiency was therefore excluded. The most common mutations of the adult phenotype, Ile-17

Investigation and Analysis of Emotional State and Oxytocin Level in Patients with Postpartum Depression.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common mental disorder in postpartum women, negatively impacting physical and mental health. Correlation analysis can predict the relationship between variables. By detecting the abnormal level of oxytocin, clinicians can timely know the emotional states of parturients to guide clinical practice. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between emotional states and oxytocin (OT) levels in patients with PPD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 166 PPD patients admitted to Cangzhou Central Hospital from May 2020 to March 2023 were r

Depressive Symptoms during Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period: A Tertiary Hospital Experience.

Background and Objectives: The prevalence of depressive symptoms during pregnancy is about 20%, and 10-15% in the postpartum period. Suicide is a worrying cause of death among women in these periods. Although ICD-10 lacks specific definitions for perinatal depression (it is planned in ICD-11), the DSM-5 defines it. Various etiological factors and treatment options are being investigated. This study aimed to examine potential etiological factors in order to contribute to potential preventive and therapeutic approaches. Material and Methods: A prospective study at the Clinic for Gynecology and O
