Surveillance for Borrelia burgdorferi in Ixodes Ticks and Small Rodents in British Columbia.

To determine the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi in British Columbian ticks, fieldwork was conducted over a 2-year period. In all, 893 ticks (Ixodes pacificus, I. angustus, I. soricis, Ixodes spp., and Dermacentor andersoni) of different life stages were retrieved from 483 small rodents (Peromyscus maniculatus, Perognathus parvus, and Reithrodontomys megalotis). B. burgdorferi DNA was detected in 5 out of 359 tick pools, and 41 out of 483 mice were serologically confirmed to have antibodies against B. burgdorferi. These results were consistent with previous studies, data from passive survei…

Isolation and characterization of Wad Medani virus obtained in the tuva Republic of Russia.

Wad Medani virus (WMV) belongs to the genus Orbivirus and is a poorly studied arbovirus with unclear medical significance. Presently, a limited number of WMV strains are characterized and available in NCBI GenBank, some isolated many years ago. A new WMV strain was isolated in 2012 from Dermacentor nuttalli ticks collected from sheep in the Tuva Republic, Russia, and sequenced using high-throughput methods. Complete coding sequences were obtained revealing signs of multiple intersegment reassortments. These point to a high variability potential in WMV that may lead to the formation of strains …

Coxiella burnetii and coinfections in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Central Germany.

A total of 1000 Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected in 2006 and 2007 in a forest region of Central Germany and investigated for Coxiella burnetii. The transposase element IS1111 and isocitrate dehydrogenase gene were targets of the real-time polymerase chain reaction. The pathogen was detected in 19 ticks (1.9%), and interestingly, in 10 of these samples, coinfections with Borrelia spp., spotted fever group rickettsiae, or Babesia spp. were present. Our study reports on C. burnetii infections in I. ricinus ticks in an area where cases of Q fever occur regularly and Dermacentor marginatus is no…

The population dynamics of two vertically transmitted infections.

The transmission of Keystone virus in the mosquito Aedes atlanticus and of Rickettsia rickettsii in the tick Dermacentor andersoni is modeled and analyzed. Both of these infections can be transmitted vertically from an infective parent to newborn offspring as well as horizontally via direct or indirect contacts with infected individuals. The vertical transmission mechanism plays a major role in the maintenance of these infections and its effects are analyzed in detail. This same mechanism can act as a means for controlling the size of the infected host population and an analysis of this effect…

[TIBOLA: an emerging clinically polymorphous rickettsiosis].

BACKGROUND: TIBOLA (tick-borne lymphadenopathy) is a rickettsiosis caused chiefly by R. slovaca, transmitted by a Dermacentor tick. We report five cases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three patients were diagnosed at the initial inflammatory stage (facial oedema, necrotic eschar, lymphadenopathy, fever) and two at the stage of sequelae (alopecia and fatigue). Microbiological evidence was present in only one case. DISCUSSION: TIBOLA is a form of rickettsiosis that is currently spreading in Europe. Clinical diagnosis is often made late because of the mild symptoms and the lack of knowledge among clini…

[Differences in the distant transmission of the tick-borne encephalitis virus by ixodid ticks of 2 subfamilies].

Simultaneous but separate feeding of ticks on nonviremic animal (guinea pig) has shown that Amblyomminae ticks are practically unable to transmit distantly tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) to the specimens of their own subfamily and to Ixodinae as well. Ixodes persulcatus and I. ricinus displayed their ability as donors and recipients of TBEV (adults and nymphs) not only for their own subfamily representatives but also as donors for recipients of Amblyomminae subfamily (nymphs and adults of Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus and nymphs of Haemaphysalis). Experimental and literature data analysi…

Geographical distribution patterns and habitat suitability models for presence of host-seeking ixodid ticks in dense woodlands of Mendocino County, California.

We used drag sampling to examine the geographical distribution patterns of ixodid ticks engaging in open (non-nidicolous) host-seeking behavior in dense woodland habitats of the climatically and ecologically diverse Mendocino County in north coastal California. The findings based on this sampling methodology reflect risk of human exposure to host-seeking ticks rather than the true distribution of the ticks. Drag sampling in 78 sites yielded 7,860 nymphal or adult Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls, 220 Dermacentor occidentalis Marx, 150 Ixodes spinipalpis Hadwen & Nuttall, 15 Hemaphysalis leporis…

Diversity and prevalence of spotted-fever group rickettsiae in ixodid ticks across Slovakia, Central Europe.

Habitats with the sympatric occurrence of several ixodid tick species are significant from an epidemiological perspective. These habitats can influence the diversity and prevalence of tick-borne pathogens, and their monitoring can help estimate the risk of infection. A total of 1260 questing ticks from five species (Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor marginatus, Dermacentor reticulatus, Haemaphysalis concinna, and Haemaphysalis inermis) were collected from vegetation using the flagging method in three different habitats in eastern Slovakia. Additionally, 900 rodent-attached ticks of six species (I. r…

First report and molecular identification of a reptilian tick, Amblyomma helvolum (Acari: Ixodidae), infesting wild green iguanas, Iguana iguana (Reptilia: Iguanidae), in southern Taiwan.

The genetic identity of the reptilian tick, Amblyomma helvolum, infesting wild green iguanas (Iguana iguana) in Taiwan, was examined. Genetic identity was determined by analyzing the 16S mitochondrial DNA gene sequences obtained from 11 Taiwan A. helvolum compared with other Amblyomma species, with two Dermacentor species and two Rhipicephalus species serving as outgroups. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all the Taiwan specimens were genetically affiliated with a monophyletic group of A. helvolum and can be discriminated from other Amblyomma species. Our results provide the first genetic i…
