The combined diagnosis of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis in a retrospective cohort of 1000 consecutive patients with occupational contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of combined allergic and irritant contact dermatitis is an accepted subdiagnosis for hand dermatitis, and it is often considered in a patient with contact dermatitis, a positive and relevant patch test result, and wet work exposure. We therefore hypothesize that it is arbitrary for wet work exposure to be taken into consideration in a patient with newly diagnosed relevant contact allergy. Furthermore, an overestimation of the diagnosis will probably occur if the criteria for wet work exposure are applied correctly, as many occupations have an element of wet work. OBJ

Allergic Contact Sensitization in Healthy Skin Differs from Sensitization in Chronic Dermatitis: Atopic, Occupational Wet Work, and Stasis Dermatitis.

The duration of cutaneous inflammation preceding sensitization influences the resulting allergic response; the innate immune system instructs the adaptive immune response. Potent allergens that function as their own irritant cause classic T helper cell type 1 skewed dermatitis. Examples include poison ivy, epoxy resin, and methylchloroisothiazolinone. Less potent allergens, such as food proteins and propylene glycol, sensitize skin affected by chronic dermatitis resulting in a T helper cell type 2 skewed response, sometimes with associated systemic contact dermatitis. Systemic contact dermatit

Occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers: an analysis of patch test data from the Danish contact dermatitis group, 2002-2011.

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact dermatitis among hairdressers is frequent, owing to daily exposure to irritants and allergens. OBJECTIVES: To identify sensitization to the most common allergens associated with the occupation of hairdressing. METHODS: Patch test results of 399 hairdressers and 1995 matched controls with contact dermatitis, registered by the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group between January 2002 and December 2011, were analysed. All patients were patch tested with the European baseline series, and hairdressers were additionally tested with the hairdressing series. RESULTS: Occ

Getting a Grip on Occupational Hand Dermatitis: Key Considerations for Evaluation and Management.

Occupational hand dermatitis (HD) is a chronic refractory hand eczema that is caused or exacerbated by workplace exposures. The hands are uniquely vulnerable to dermatitis from exposure to allergens and irritants in the workplace, including metals, preservatives, acrylates, rubber accelerators, food, water, plants, and fragrances. In occupational allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), patch testing plays a critical role in identifying contact allergens to help guide avoidance strategies that are key for clinical improvement. A coordinated return-to-work plan is essential for managing patients with

A survey of exposures related to recognized occupational contact dermatitis in Denmark in 2010.

BACKGROUND: Skin diseases are the most commonly recognized occupational diseases in Denmark, and occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) comprises ∼95% of all cases. OBJECTIVES: To prevent occupational contact dermatitis, it is important to specifically identify exposures and work routines related to outbreak of the disease. The aim of this study was to give an overview of exposures for patients with occupational contact dermatitis in Denmark in 2010, and relate this to line of work and disease severity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was a descriptive, register-based study including patients

Role of protective gloves in the causation and treatment of occupational irritant contact dermatitis.

Irritant contact dermatitis of the hands is a significant occupational problem. Management primarily involves cessation of exposure to hazardous substances. Protective gloves can reduce or eliminate exposure of the hands to hazardous substances if used correctly, but if not selected and used correctly, protective gloves can actually cause or worsen irritant contact dermatitis of the hands by increasing exposure of the hands to hazardous chemicals. We present two cases of occupational irritant contact dermatitis of the hands caused by incorrect use of protective gloves. Glove failure can occur

Occupational contact dermatitis in the UK: a surveillance report from EPIDERM and OPRA.

Since February 1993 the EPIDERM surveillance scheme has collected data on occupational skin disease from consultant dermatologists in the UK. Reporting by occupational physicians to the scheme began in May 1994 and was superseded in January 1996 by the Occupational Physicians Reporting Activity (OPRA). The schemes currently receive reports on incident cases from 244 dermatologists and 790 occupational physicians. An estimated total of 9937 cases of contact dermatitis reported by dermatologists was calculated from surveillance data; 8129 contact dermatitis cases were estimated from reports by o

[Allergens and harmful factors in the light of occupational dermatitis registration in Poland in 1978].

786 occupational dermatoses notification in Poland have been analysed. The significance of the compounds of chromium, cobalt, oils, lubricants, cement, epidians and epoxy resins in the pathogenesis of occupational dermatoses has been presented. The recommended "set of 5 allergens" is sufficient to explain the cause of about half of the diseases. Epidemiological data on occupational dermatoses confirm the advisability of adopting the author's criteria of handling occupational dermatoses and considering the possibilities of certain technological improvements.

Prevalence of Occupational Contact Dermatitis Among Dental Personnel Using the Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire-2002: A Prospective Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Occupational skin disease (OSD), such as contact dermatitis, is widespread among dental professionals; however, reports regarding its prevalence have inconsistent findings and methodology. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional survey using a self-reported questionnaire to estimate the prevalence of work-related and occupational exposure-induced skin diseases. METHODOLOGY: A self-administered questionnaire, based on the validated Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire-2002, was distributed to 15 dental clinics in Israel in the first half of 2022. The questionnaire included ques

Occupational Contact Urticaria, Protein Contact Dermatitis and Concomitant Airway Diseases in the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases in 2005-2020: Main Causes and Occupations at Risk.

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact urticaria (OCU) and protein contact dermatitis (PCD) may co-exist with occupational asthma (OA) and occupational rhinitis (OR) and be caused by the same allergen. These diseases are commonly caused by immediate (immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated) allergic sensitisation. Limited data exist on the prevalence and causes of concomitant occupational skin and airway diseases (CSAD). OBJECTIVES: To analyse data from the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases (FROD) for prevalence, main causes, and at-risk occupations for concomitant occupational skin and airway dise
