Ultraviolet-radiation-induced erythema and suppression of contact hypersensitivity responses in patients with polymorphic light eruption.

Ultraviolet-radiation suppresses cell-mediated immunity in healthy humans. It has been postulated that, in the short term, this immunosuppression prevents autoimmune responses to ultraviolet-radiation damaged skin. Patients with polymorphic light eruption (PLE) demonstrate abnormal responses to ultraviolet-radiation suggestive of an immune response to an ultraviolet-radiation-induced antigen. We investigated whether PLE patients (n=22) were resistant to ultraviolet-radiation-induced immunosuppression compared to skin-type, aged-matched controls (n=23). Groups of patients and controls (six subj

Fragrance material review on 1-(2,5,5-trimethylcycloheptyl)ethan-1-one.

A toxicologic and dermatologic review of 1-(2,5,5-trimethylcycloheptyl)ethan-1-one when used as a fragrance ingredient is presented. 1-(2,5,5-Trimethylcycloheptyl)ethan-1-one is a member of the fragrance structural group Alkyl Cyclic Ketones. These fragrances can be described as being composed of an alkyl, R1, and various substituted and bicyclic saturated or unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbons, R2, in which one of the rings may include up to 12 carbons. Alternatively, R2 may be a carbon bridge of C2-C4 carbon chain length between the ketone and cyclic hydrocarbon. This review contains a detailed

Drug-induced phototoxicity; an early in vitro identification of phototoxic potential of new drug entities in drug discovery and development.

Drug-induced photoirritation can be defined as an inflammatory reaction of the skin after topical or systemic administration of pharmaceutical substances. In many cases of drug-induced phototoxicity, skin reactions can be triggered by doses of sunlight regarded as harmless and most often in the ultraviolet A (320-400 nm). Several classes of drugs including antibacterials, thiazide diuretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, quinolones, and tricyclic antidepressants, even though nontoxic by themselves, may become reactive under exposure to environmental light, leading to undesired side ef

Adverse Reactions to Sunscreens.

Adverse reactions to sunscreens are uncommon in relation to their widespread use [Loden et al. Br J Dermatol. 2011;165(2):255-62; Jansen et al. J Am Acad Dermatol. 2013;69(6):867 e861-814; quiz 881-862] and can be related to both active and inactive ingredients in sunscreen products [DiNardo et al. J Cosmet Dermatol. 2018;17(1):15-19; Barrientos et al. Contact Dermatitis. 2019;81(2):151-52]. Pathogenetically, the main cutaneous adverse reaction patterns to sunscreens can be divided into allergic and irritant contact dermatitis, phototoxic and photoallergic contact dermatitis, contact urticaria

Compositae dermatitis.

Compositae dermatitis is an allergic contact dermatitis. The most important allergens in the Compositae family are sesquiterpene lactones (SL), which are present in the oleoresin fraction of leaf, stem, flower and possibly pollen. Compositae dermatitis is most frequently seen in middle-aged and elderly people in patterns reflecting airborne or direct contact with the allergens. The pattern typically starts in summer and disappears in the autumn or winter. Repeated exposure over many years may lead to a chronic and, at times, a disseminated pattern. Seasonal variation does not occur in occupati

Pattern analysis of photopatch test reactions.

In a multicenter study, photopatch test results from more than 1500 patients were evaluated between 1985 and 1990 and from 614 patients between 1990 and 1992. Photopatch testing was conducted according to a standardized procedure. Nearly half of the photoreactions were unclassifiable according to the classic definitions of photoallergic or phototoxic reactions. To facilitate the interpretation of these remaining photopatch test reactions, we developed a computerized substance specific reaction pattern analysis. By sequential readings from immediately after irradiation up to 72 h later and by m
