Ocular Manifestations in Seborrheic Dermatitis Epidemiology, Clinical Features, and Management: A Comprehensive Review.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) often leads to ocular manifestations (OM) that are frequently overlooked. This study comprehensively explains the genesis of these ocular issues, which involves a combination of Malassezia overgrowth, changes in sebum production, and inflammatory responses in the body. The periocular region is rich in sebaceous glands, allowing Malassezia to thrive, which can lead to an inflammatory reaction that spreads to the eye surface, causing disorders such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, and ocular surface diseases. Although epidemiological data are limited, it is w

Composition of cutaneous bacterial microbiome in seborrheic dermatitis patients: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a multifactorial aetiology. Malassezia yeasts have been associated with the disease but the role of bacterial composition in SD has not been thoroughly investigated. OBJECTIVES: To profile the bacterial microbiome of SD patients and compare this with the microbiome of individuals with no inflammatory skin disease (controls). METHODS: This was a cross sectional study embedded in a population-based study. Skin swabs were taken from naso-labial fold from patients with seborrheic dermatitis (lesional skin: n = 22;

Seborrheic Dermatitis: Three Novel Trichoscopic Signs and Its Correlation to Malassezia sp. Colonization.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic recurrent erythemato-squamous condition that affects seborrheic areas causing flaking, erythema, and pruritus. Etiology is multifactorial and the role of Malassezia sp.remains controversial. We present a series of 12 patients with trichoscopic and direct microscopic exams. We analyzed the presence of the already known SD trichoscopic signs and its correlation to the amount of Malassezia sp. in the scalp. We describe three novel signs: the "dandelion" vascular conglomerate, the "cherry blossom" vascular pattern, and the intrafollicular oily material; of w

Sympathetic skin responses from the scalp evoked by electrical stimulation in seborrheic dermatitis.

Although the role of autonomic nervous system in seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is still unclear, seborrhea is sometimes accepted as a sign of autonomic dysfunction in several nervous system diseases. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity in SD by recording sympathetic skin responses (SSR) from the scalp (S-SSR). Thirty-one control subjects and 22 SD patients were studied by evoking right and left S-SSR with electrical stimulation of the right median nerve at the wrist. Mean latencies and maximum amplitudes were calculated for both sides in each group. In

Scalp Seborrheic Dermatitis Severity Is Associated with Lipid and Liver-Associated Biochemical Parameters.

Introduction: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a lipid-dependent inflammatory dermatosis in which sebaceous activity, Malassezia, barrier dysfunction and host inflammation interact. Whether scalp SD severity is associated with systemic lipid and liver-associated biochemical parameters remains unclear. Methods: In this exploratory cross-sectional observational study, we included 34 adults with clinically diagnosed scalp SD. Severity was assessed using a published 16-point scalp SD score and a study-specific 0-36 physician-assessed score. Fasting lipids, glucose, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), asp

Bidirectional Associations Between Seborrheic Dermatitis and Epithelial Barrier Diseases: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common skin disease characterized by epithelial barrier breakdown. The epithelial barrier theory (EBT) implicates epithelial barrier disruption in the development of epithelial barrier diseases (EBDs). We hypothesized that SD is associated with an increased risk of EBDs and investigated the bidirectional association between SD and EBDs. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 5,083,689 patients using a large US administrative claims database from January 1, 2016, to June 30, 2022. The mean (standard deviation) follow-up was 3.25 (1.75) years with a t

Uncommon Petaloid Form of Seborrheic Dermatitis Seen in Fitzpatrick Skin Types V-VI.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is an inflammatory disease that has a papulosquamous morphology in areas rich in sebaceous glands such as the scalp, face, and body folds. Petaloid SD is an uncommon presentation found in patients with dark skin (Fitzpatrick Skin type V-VI). This form of SD can appear as pink or hypopigmented polycyclic coalescing rings or scaly macules and patches in the typical areas SD appears, which can mimic other conditions including lupus erythematosus. There is significant disproportion in the representation of darker skin types in dermatological textbooks and sca

Postponed depth electrode placement due to seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis is a common fungal infection of the scalp that may potentially affect depth electrode placement for intracranial seizure monitoring. No cases documenting the safety of proceeding with depth electrode placement in the setting of seborrheic dermatitis have been reported. OBSERVATIONS: A 19-year-old man with a history of drug-resistant epilepsy was taken to the operating room for placement of depth electrodes for long-term seizure monitoring. Annular patches of erythema with trailing scales were discovered after shaving the patient's head. Dermatology service wa

Dynamic Thiol/Disulfide Balance in Patients with Seborrheic Dermatitis: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease, in which many endogenous and exogenous factors play a role. Recent studies have shown that oxidative stress increases in these patients. The role of the dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis, an important component of the oxidative stress, in the pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis has not yet been investigated. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to investigate the relationship between the dynamic thiol/disulfide balance in the plasma of seborrheic dermatitis patients and disease severity. METHODS: In this case-control stu

Seborrheic dermatitis flare in a Dutch male due to commensal Malassezia furfur overgrowth.

This is a case of seborrheic dermatitis (SD) barbae from which Malassezia furfur (M. furfur) was isolated. The patient was a 57-year-old Dutch male, who was hospitalized for fever and weakness of extremities. He presented with symmetrical erythema with an abundance of greasy chaffy scales on his beard area. No reasons were detected for his fever following a routine search. M. furfur was identified through mycological examination, including direct microscopic examination, culture, Tween test, esculine splitting test and DNA sequencing, of samples from the skin lesions. The patient was treated w

Novel molecular targets and natural drug candidates for the antifungal therapy of seborrheic dermatitis.

Background: The prevalence of seborrheic dermatitis (SD) involving scalp and non-scalp areas has spread worldwide because of the decreasing susceptibility to azole antifungal drugs and increasing diffusion of the multidrug-resistant fungi of Malassezia species. The antifungal resistance results from structural changes of well-known and new molecular targets and biochemical adaptations of fungi to the standard synthetical treatment. Meanwhile, the research and use of traditional plant products as an alternative therapy strategy for dermatological diseases has increased tremendously over the pas
