Gastric volvulus is torsion of the stomach, which can compromise the gastric orifices and result in either acute or chronic and intermittent symptoms. We believe that gastric volvulus, especially when partial or intermittent, may be more common than has been previously thought. The condition should be suspected in any patient who has a history of retching or vomiting and has a paraesophageal hiatus hernia or eventration of the diaphragm. The classic triad of retching, severe and constant epigastric pain, and difficulty in passing a nasogastric tube should suggest the presence of acute gastric

A total of 38937 6 X 6 cm chest films, made in three series of check-up programmes for local residents above the age for nursery school, were examined for partial eventration of the right dome of the diaphragm in relation to age. It was found that after nursery school age, eventration and irregularity of the right dome increased with age, particularly among women over the age of 60. In a series observed in a rural region, marked eventration was found in more than 1% of the women above 60 years. In another study on 1 332 liver scans in patients without intrinsic liver disease, a prominent, dome

This paper reports a case of chromosomal mosaicism for trisomy 5 recovered from amniotic fluid cells and from skin fibroblasts of a liveborn dysmorphic male. Routine amniocentesis was performed at 16 weeks' gestation because of parental concern. Trisomy 5 cells were measured from 25 per cent of amniocytes from two culture vessels. No further invasive testing was performed until 32 weeks' gestation, at which time ultrasound examination showed a fetus with intrauterine growth retardation. Fetal blood sampling was then performed, with only karyotypically normal cells recovered. At birth, the chil

Diaphragm dysfunction includes diaphragmatic eventration, weakness, and paralysis, a set of disorders which are often challenging to diagnose clinically due to their varied presenting symptoms including dyspnea, positional orthopnea, cough, or even chest pain. Given the clinical challenge in diagnosing these conditions, diaphragm dysfunction is often suggested incidentally on initial imaging for workup of these symptoms. Imaging can play an important role both in raising the initial suspicion for diaphragm dysfunction as well as in making the diagnosis through real-time evaluation of the diaph…

BACKGROUND Ocular coloboma is a rare congenital malformation of the optic fissure. Previous literature has indicated that pathogenic changes in the RARB gene are associated with syndromic ocular coloboma, specifically pulmonary hypoplasia/agenesis, diaphragmatic hernia/eventration, anophthalmia/microphthalmia, and cardiac defect (PDAC) syndrome. There are limited reports of non-syndromic cases of ocular coloboma associated with pathogenic variants in the RARB gene. CASE REPORT We report a mother and son with isolated ocular coloboma and identify a novel variant of uncertain significance in the

Gastric volvulus, organoaxial or mesenterioaxial, is a rare condition in infancy and childhood. We experienced 7 cases of pediatric gastric volvulus, consisting of 3 cases of secondary gastric volvulus due to left diaphragmatic eventration or paraesophageal hernia and 4 cases of idiopathic gastric volvulus. Of 7 cases, five were organoaxial in type and two were mesenterioaxial. The main symptoms of secondary gastric volvulus were vomiting and respiratory difficulty whereas those of idiopathic gastric volvulus were abdominal distension and weight loss with or without failure to thrive. It may b…

Most patients had prenatal and perinatal issues, particularly from respiratory, growth, and feeding standpoints. Although small birth parameters were common, long-term growth trends varied widely. The diaphragm is the main breathing muscle and contraction of the diaphragm is vital for ventilation so any disease that interferes with diaphragmatic innervation, contractile muscle function, or mechanical coupling to the chest wall can cause diaphragm dysfunction. Diaphragm dysfunction is associated with dyspnoea, intolerance to exercise, sleep disturbances, hypersomnia, with a potential impact on survival. Diagnosis of diaphragm dysfunction is based on static and dynamic imaging tests (especially ultrasound) and pulmonary function and phrenic nerve stimulation tests. Treatment will depend o

Respiration was not stabilized in two patients with left diaphragmatic eventration and hypoplasia accompanied by lung hypoplasia, even with maximal ventilation. The common underlying factors associated with death were congenital heart defects and heart failure (96%), followed by pulmonary hypertension (78%). The common final modes …

A 14-week infant, with respiratory distress since birth, was referred to our institution. Chest radiography and ultrasonographic examination confirmed right-sided diaphragmatic eventration. Owing to difficulty in securing a peripheral venous access, a double-lumen 4-Fr central venous catheter (CVC) was inserted into the right internal jugular vein, under ultrasonographic guidance. Aspiration of blood from both ports confirmed intravascular placement. A frontal radiograph done after the procedure showed the catheter tip in the right atrium, hence it was withdrawn to a level just below the carin…

We describe herein a case of unilateral pulmonary agenesis (PA) with oesophageal atresia (EA)/tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) that was diagnosed prenatally and repaired by esophagoesophagostomy with stable postoperative course. The patient was born at 34 weeks gestation, after ultrasonography at 22 weeks gestation showed possible right-sided diaphragmatic eventration or PA and EA was subsequently suspected due to hydramnios. The initial X-ray showed mediastinal shift to the right, and coil up sign of the nasogastric tube, without intracardiac anomaly. Immediately after the diagnosis of EA/TEF …

The incidence of eventration of diaphragm before cardiac surgery is rare. We describe the management of a patient with eventration of the diaphragm who underwent a coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) for left main coronary artery disease followed by left diaphragm plication with video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for the postoperative respiratory insufficiency.

A 2-year-old boy with typical features of the acrocallosal syndrome is presented. His parents are first degree cousins and their first pregnancy resulted in spontaneous abortion whereas the offspring of their second pregnancy was an anencephalic baby with bilateral post-axial polydactyly of the hands. The possibility of including anencephaly in the spectrum of the CNS malformations of the acrocallosal syndrome is suggested.

INTRODUCTION: In France, medico-administrative data are collected through the Programme de Médicalisation des Systèmes d'Information (PMSI), … uding 24 neonatal deaths with confirmed CDH. Encoding errors were found in four cases (omphalocele, diaphragmatic eventration), and eight CDH cases were missing from the CDHdb. The sensitivity and specificity of PMSI were estimated at 100 % (98.5 %; 100 %) and 99.9 % (99.9 %; 100 %), respectively. At the national level, 1680 cases were identified, corresponding to an incid …
