General anesthesia was induced in eight subjects by the slow IV injection of 60 mg diazepam. During the anesthetic effect, the EEG was characterized by 3-5 Hz high voltage activity. Immediate recovery of consciousness and reversal of the EEG pattern to fast low voltage activity was obtained after the IV injection of 60 mg aminophylline. On the other hand, three diazepam-treated subjects who received IV saline instead of aminophylline recovered from anesthesia 73-120 min after saline.

Plasma concentrations of barbital and diazepam were measured daily during a double-blind study of the efficacy of the two drugs in the treatment of delirium tremens and less severe clinical states. Treatment was estimated as satisfactory in the majority of cases; the present study deals with the satisfactory groups only. Studies were conducted in 189 oral surgery out-patients to evaluate the combination of meperidine hydrochloride and diazepam for anesthesia and to determine its effect on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. Results showed that neither ventricular cardiac arrhythmias nor clinically significant respiratory depression occurred in the sedated patients; meperidine-diazepam proved to be satisfactory for oral surgical procedures.
