Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Differentiating Multiple System Atrophy Cerebellar Type and Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3.

Multiple system atrophy cerebellar type (MSA-C) and spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) demonstrate similar manifestations, including ataxia, pyramidal and extrapyramidal signs, as well as atrophy and signal intensity changes in the cerebellum and brainstem. MSA-C and SCA3 cannot be clinically differentiated through T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) alone; therefore, clinical consensus criteria and genetic testing are also required. Here, we used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to measure water molecular diffusion of white matter and investigate the difference between MSA-C and SCA3

Intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in characterization of axillary lymph nodes: Preliminary animal experience.

PURPOSE: To investigate the diagnostic value of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for discriminating axillary metastatic from non-metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) in rabbit models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The institutional animal care and use committee approved this study. Forty New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into two groups. The axillary LN models were created by inoculating VX2 cell suspension and complete Freund's adjuvant in the mammary glands of 20 female rabbits of each group, respectively. Conventional MRI and IVIM DWI were performed after

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging-directed biopsy of a metastatic bone tumor: Lung adenocarcinoma with ALK rearrangement.

A previously healthy 44-year-old Japanese man with a 5-month history of lumbago presented to the emergency department with acute respiratory failure caused by pneumonia, and was immediately intubated. Computed tomography revealed a lung mass, pleural effusion, and multiple osteolytic lesions; however, the results of thoracentesis and bronchial brushing were not definitive. We performed a bone tumor biopsy guided by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) with mechanical ventilation, which enabled the diagnosis of ALK rearrangement-positive lung adenocarcinoma. In the era of prec

Acquired Sleep-Related Hypermotor Epilepsy with Disrupted White Matter Tracts Assessed by Multishell Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE) (previously frontal lobe epilepsy) is a rare seizure disorder commonly misdiagnosed or unrecognized, causing negative patient sequelae. While usually reported in familial studies, it is more commonly acquired. Diagnosis is a challenge due to its low incidence in comparison with the more common sleep disorders or psychogenic etiologies in the differential diagnosis. Diagnosis is scaled on degree of certainty based on described or clinically documented semiology, with video EEG as a helpful, but not necessary, adjunct. Current treatment is similar to other

Assessment of the Placenta in Intrauterine Growth Restriction by Diffusion-Weighted Imaging and Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.

Placental insufficiency is a major cause of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and seriously affects fetal development. When placental insufficiency happened, the diffusion of water molecule was restricted and the metabolic balance was destroyed in the placenta. In this prospective study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in combination with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) for placental insufficiency in IUGR. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were calculated using DWI, and the metabolism of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), c

Evolution of Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging Signal Abnormality in Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, With Histopathological Correlation.

IMPORTANCE: Prion diseases represent the archetype of brain diseases caused by protein misfolding, with the most common subtype being sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), a rapidly progressive dementia. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has emerged as the most sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence for the diagnosis of sCJD, but few studies have assessed the evolution of MRI signal as the disease progresses. OBJECTIVES: To assess the natural history of the MRI signal abnormalities on DWI in sCJD to improve our understanding of the pathogenesis and to investigate the potentia

Transient Ischemic Attack Fast-track and Long-Term Stroke Risk: Role of Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Acute ischemic lesions on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI-MRI) are reliable predictors of recurrent stroke at 90 days. However, to date, limited information on transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients with positive DWI lesions for stroke risk from 1 to 5 years is available. In this study, we evaluated the role of positive DWI lesions and vascular risk factors on stroke, cardiovascular death, and mortality at 90 days (T0), 1 year (T1), and 5 years (T2). Moreover, we also evaluated the association between stroke risk and the presence of DWI lesions. METHODS: We pe

Sequential magnetic resonance imaging finding of intramedullary spinal cord abscess including diffusion weighted image: a case report.

Intramedullary spinal cord abscess (ISCA) is a rare infection of the central nervous system. We describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, including the diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) findings, of ISCA in a 78-year-old man. The initial conventional MRI of the thoracic spine demonstrated a subtle enhancing nodule accompanied by significant edema. On the follow-up MRI after seven days, the nodule appeared as a ring-enhancing nodule. The non-enhancing central portion of the nodule appeared hyperintense on DWI with a decreased apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value on the ADC ma

Changes in diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging findings in the acute and subacute phases of anoxic encephalopathy.

We report serial magnetic resonance imaging findings in a case of anoxic encephalopathy (AE). Diffusion-weighted images clearly showed early development of lesions in the cerebellum, cerebral cortex, and caudate putamen, along with delayed manifestation of lesions in the hippocampus, corpus callosum, and white matter. The present case is the first to demonstrate delayed development of postischemic changes in the hippocampus and deep white matter after AE on neuroimaging.
