Measurement of the lowest dosage of phenobarbital that can produce drug discrimination in rats.

RATIONALE: Accurate measurement of the threshold dosage of phenobarbital that can produce drug discrimination (DD) may improve our understanding of the mechanisms and properties of such discrimination. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare three methods for determining the threshold dosage for phenobarbital (D) versus no-drug (N) DD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats learned a D versus N DD in two-lever operant training chambers. A titration scheme was employed to increase or decrease dosage at the end of each 18-day block of sessions depending on whether the rat had achieved criterion accuracy

Retention weighted recall improves discrimination of Alzheimer's disease.

Impaired recall for early items (primacy) and late items (recency) on word list recall tests are seen in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We compared conventional scoring on the Telephone Instrument for Cognitive Status (TICS) recall list with scorings based on retention-weighted recall (RWR: each item weighted by its serial position) in older adults participating in a community-based aging study. Subjects with mild AD (N=18) did not differ from those without dementia (N=231) with respect to recency (46% vs. 59%, p = 0.2), but had impaired primacy (2% vs. 39%, p < .001) on word recall on the TICS. Correspondence as conditional stimulus control: insights from experiments with pigeons.

Correspondence between saying and doing, typically studied in young children and individuals with developmental disabilities, was examined as an instance of conditional stimulus control. In Experiment 1, 3 pigeons were exposed to a two-component repeated-trials procedure. In the first-sample or say-component, two response keys transilluminated by different colored lights were presented and the pigeon pecked one of the keys. After 1 s of darkness in the chamber, the second-choice or do-component was presented, in which the two keys again were transilluminated, one by the color selected in the f

Differential generalization to pentobarbital in rats trained to discriminate lorazepam, chlordiazepoxide, diazepam, or triazolam.

In drug discrimination studies benzodiazepine-trained animals have typically responded on the drug lever when tested with barbiturates. In a recent study, greater specificity appeared to be shown when lorazepam was used as a training drug. The generality and limits of this finding were explored in the present set of experiments. The asymmetrical cross-generalization found in lorazepam- and pentobarbital-trained baboons was replicated in rats and was shown not to be a function of either lorazepam (0.1., 0.32, or 1.0 mg/kg) or pentobarbital (10 or 25 mg/kg) training dose (i.e., pentobarbital-tra

Perceived sex discrimination amplifies the effect of antagonism on cigarette smoking.

INTRODUCTION: Compared to men, the decline in smoking during the past few decades has been slower for women, and smoking-related morbidity and mortality has increased substantially. Identifying sex-specific risk factors will inform more targeted intervention/prevention efforts. The purpose of this research is to examine the interactive effect of psychological (trait antagonism) and social (perceived sex discrimination) factors on current cigarette smoking and whether these effects differ by sex. METHODS: Participants in the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span stud

Effects of novel fentanyl derivatives in rats trained to discriminate morphine.

Novel substances structurally related to fentanyl are used alone or in combination with other drugs, resulting in toxicity and overdoses. As limited information is available about the pharmacology of these novel fentanyl derivatives, we evaluated the capacity and potency of the parent compound fentanyl and thirteen fentanyl derivatives to produce morphine-like discriminative stimulus effects. Using a two-lever, drug discrimination procedure, Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to discriminate between injections of 3.2 mg/kg morphine and saline under a fixed ratio-10 schedule for food delivery. Discriminative stimulus effects of diazepam in rats: evidence for a maximal effect.

Rats were trained to discriminate between saline and either 0.3, 1.0, 3.0 or 6.0 mg/kg of diazepam in a two-choice, discrete-trial avoidance procedure. Diazepam, chlordiazepoxide, flurazepam and pentobarbital occasioned dose-related increases in diazepam-appropriate responding in all four training dose groups. Increasing the training dose of diazepam from 0.3 to 1.0 mg/kg resulted in approximately a 3-fold shift to the right in the dose-effect curves for each of these four drugs. However, increasing the training dose to 3.0 or 6.0 mg/kg did not result in additional, concomitant shifts in these

Trends and determinants of mental illness in humanitarian migrants resettled in Australia: Analysis of longitudinal data.

Given the frequent exposure of humanitarian migrants to traumatic or stressful circumstances, there exists a potential predisposition to mental illness. Our objective was to pinpoint the trends and determinants of mental illness among humanitarian migrants resettled in Australia. This study considered five waves of longitudinal data involving humanitarian migrants resettled in Australia. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychological distress were assessed using PTSD-8 and Kessler-6 screening tools. Through a Generalised Linear Mixed model (GLMM), variables displaying a 95% CI that ex

The effects of moderate prenatal alcohol exposure on performance in object and spatial discrimination tasks by adult male rats.

Exposure to alcohol during pregnancy produces Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, which in its most severe form is characterized by physical dysmorphology and neurobehavioral alterations. Moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (mPAE) is known to produce deficits in discrimination of spatial locations in adulthood. However, the impact of mPAE on higher-order sensory representations, such as discrimination of perceptually similar stimuli, is currently unknown. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that mPAE would disrupt performance on hippocampal-sensitive tasks that require discrimination b

Correlation of ultrasound cross-sectional area of the median nerve, nerve conduction studies and 2-point discrimination.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between a measure of physical performance, a measure of physiology and a measure of anatomy in the setting of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). METHODS: A retrospective review of 215 consecutive patients with suspected CTS was conducted. All patients were evaluated with static 2-point discrimination (2PD), ultrasound (US) measurement of the median nerve cross-sectional area (CSA), and nerve conduction studies (NCS). Correlations between 2PD and US and NCS parameters were calculated. The ability of US/NCS to predict 2PD was e

Acamprosate and alcohol: III. Effects on alcohol discrimination in the rat.

It has been shown that acamprosate (calcium-acetyl homotaurinate) decreases voluntary ethanol drinking in laboratory animals as well as relapse behaviour in human alcoholics. Although glutamatergic mechanisms have been implicated in several recent studies in the action of acamprosate, the basic mechanism remains unknown. In order to gain more insight into possible mechanisms underlying the ethanol intake-suppressing effects of acamprosate, we investigated this compound in an ethanol discrimination test. Male Wistar rats were trained in a two-lever operant drug discrimination paradigm to make d

Do coping strategies discriminate eating disordered individuals better than eating disorder features? An explorative study on female inpatients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

The purpose of this explorative research was to examine how the COPE (Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced Inventory), an established instrument for measuring coping styles, and EDI-2 (Eating Disorder Inventory-2), a widely used questionnaire for assessing psychological and behavioural features of eating disorders (ED), discriminate among healthy individuals, inpatients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and inpatients with bulimia nervosa (BN). A discriminant analysis approach was used. Results showed that coping styles such as positive attitude, planning and social support are even more discrim

Immigrant generation and mental health among Muslim American youth: Pathways through perceived discrimination and Muslim American identity.

Prior research suggests that immigrant generation, perceived discrimination, and identity shape Muslim American immigrants' mental health, but these factors have rarely been examined simultaneously, especially not while comparing different immigrant generations of Muslim Americans directly to each other and to Muslim Americans with no recent history of immigration. We examined the relationships between these factors and depression and anxiety symptoms in a sample of 157 Muslim American college students (range = 17-48; Mage = 21.16, SD = 3.69; 75.2% female; immigrant generations: 23.6% first, 5

Routine assessment of gastrointestinal symptom using a validated questionnaire in the clinical setting to assess the probability of organic or functional gastrointestinal diseases.

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms can be challenging in terms of determining etiology and management strategies. Identifying likely organic pathology is important since it can be treated and may result in further, long-term harm to the patient if not treated. Currently, organic pathology is often identified via invasive procedures such as endoscopy or referral to a medical imaging service. We report on an approach that offers a first step at identifying patients with an organic gastrointestinal disease based on the SAGIS, a validated symptom questionnaire. METHODS

Links between ethnic discrimination, mental health, protective factors, and hair cortisol concentrations in asylum seekers living in Germany.

Objective: Asylum seekers often experience ethnic discrimination on the flight or in the host country, which may be associated with chronic stress and impaired mental health. Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, a known physiological correlate of chronic stress, can be assessed using hair cortisol concentrations (HCC). The present study aimed to investigate how different forms of perceived ethnic discrimination are associated with mental health outcomes, HCC, and protective factors in asylum seekers living in Germany. Methods: Somatic symptoms (PHQ-15), symptoms of posttrau

Aripiprazole attenuates the discriminative-stimulus and subject-rated effects of D-amphetamine in humans.

The results of animal research suggest that the use of partial agonists at dopamine (DA) D2 receptors may be an effective strategy for the treatment of stimulant dependence. Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic that has partial agonist activity at D2 receptors. In this experiment, seven human participants with a history of nontherapeutic stimulant use learned to discriminate 15 mg oral D-amphetamine. After acquiring the discrimination (ie > or =80% correct responding on four consecutive sessions), the effects of a range of doses of D-amphetamine (0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 15 mg), alone and in co

The unvirtuous cycle of discrimination affecting people with hepatitis B: a multi-country qualitative assessment of key-informant perspectives.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 296 million individuals live with chronic hepatitis B worldwide, most have not been diagnosed and remain at risk of liver disease and cancer. People with hepatitis B often face discrimination that denies them employment or education opportunities, results in unfair treatment at work or in school, limits their ability to emigrate to certain countries, and in some cases prohibits them from serving in the military. Discrimination specific to hepatitis B has not been widely documented within the literature. This study aims to investigate and describe hepatitis B related di
