Psychoeducation as a mental health strategy in wartime: A meta-analysis of its effectiveness.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: To synthesize current evidence on the effectiveness of psychoeducational interventions through a systematic review and meta-analysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and Methods: A systematic search of peer-reviewed literature was conducted to identify studies evaluating psychoeducational interventions for individuals with post-traumatic stress and anxiety disorders. Eight studies, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental designs, with a total of 993 participants, met the inclusion criteria for the review. Methodological quality was assessed using p

Parenting in the Face of Trauma: Music Therapy to Support Parent-Child Dyads Affected by War and Displacement.

BACKGROUND: The literature highlights the profound psychological impact of war on children, families, and communities, emphasizing the prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and other symptoms among affected individuals. Interventions, such as Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) and music therapy, show promise in mitigating trauma effects, underscoring the need for holistic approaches that address familial and community dynamics alongside individual well-being. METHODS: Aiming to explore the influences of dyadic music therapy sessions on parents' capacity to support their

Using citation network analysis to enhance scholarship in psychological science: A case study of the human aggression literature.

Researchers cannot keep up with the volume of articles being published each year. In order to develop adequate expertise in a given field of study, students and early career scientists must be strategic in what they decide to read. Here we propose using citation network analysis to characterize the literature topology of a given area. We used the human aggression literature as our example. Our citation network analysis identified 15 research communities on aggression. The five largest communities were: "media and video games", "stress, traits and aggression", "rumination and displaced aggressi

Determining Physical and Mental Health Conditions Present in Older Adult Refugees: A Mini-Review.

In 2017, there were over 65 million displaced persons at the global level, with approximately 23 million of these people living as refugees around the world. In this same year, the US resettled 53,716 refugees, with the State of Utah receiving 954 of those refugees. Refugees, in general, often face health-related challenges upon resettlement. Since the health of aging refugee men and women is of growing concern, host communities face significant challenges in accommodating the health needs of a diverse refugee population. This study, a review of physical and mental health data from the Utah De

Bioabsorbable fixation in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology.

Bioabsorbable internal fixation devices were introduced clinically in the treatment of fractures and osteotomies of the extremities at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Helsinki University, in 1984. Since November 5, 1984, a total of 3200 patients were managed using bone or ligament fixation devices made of self-reinforced (matrix and fibres of the same polymer) bioabsorbable alpha-hydroxy polyesters. The devices used included cylindrical rods, screws, tacks, plugs, arrows, and wires. The most common indication for the use of bioabsorbable implants was the displaced malleolar fr

Daily experiences and strategies for psychological survival during the 2014 assaults in Gaza: a retrospective analysis of chronological diaries.

BACKGROUND: Public health research suggests that multiple factors contribute to the mental health sequalae of political violence, but the daily experiences and ongoing strategies of psychological survival during active warfare are not clearly understood. We analysed retrospective chronological diaries from Palestinian women in Gaza, occupied Palestinian territory, to explore their lives during Operation Protective Edge in 2014, when a series of aerial bombardments killed over 2000 Palestinians and left around 500 000 displaced from their homes. METHODS: 20 Palestinian female teachers in Gaza

Interests and Strengths in Autism, Useful but Misunderstood: A Pragmatic Case-Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies on autistic strengths are often focused on what they reveal about autistic intelligence and, in some cases, exceptional and atypical reasoning abilities. An emerging research trend has demonstrated how interests and strengths often evident in autism can be harnessed in interventions to promote the well-being, adaptive, academic and professional success of autistic people. However, abilities in certain domains may be accompanied by major limitations in others, as well as psychiatric and behavioral issues, which may challenge their inclusion in support programs. OBJECTIVES:

Effects of biofeedback versus switch-triggered functional electrical stimulation on sciatica-related foot drop.

BACKGROUND: Sciatica-related Foot Drop is a peripheral nervous condition that produces a loss of power in the ankle dorsiflexion muscles. Functional electrical stimulation is a modality of electrical stimulation that produces muscle contraction in a functional movement of the limb. This technique was utilized with positive effects in central nervous afflictions but it is not known whether or not it has any influence in motor recovery following peripheral nervous system problems. This study aims to clarify the effects of functional electrical stimulation on foot drop caused by peripheral nerve

Occupational risk factors for symptomatic lumbar disc herniation; a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies mostly did not separate between symptomatic disc herniation combined with osteochondrosis/spondylosis of the lumbar spine and symptomatic disc herniation in radiographically normal intervertebral spaces. This may at least in part explain the differences in the observed risk patterns. AIMS: To investigate the possible aetiological relevance of physical and psychosocial workload to lumbar disc herniation with and without concomitant osteochondrosis/spondylosis. METHODS: A total of 267 cases with acute lumbar disc herniation (in two practices and four clinics) and 1

Psychogenic vertigo within an anxiety frame of reference: an experimental study.

The theoretical point of departure here was the assumption that a psychogenic vertigo patient displaces affect, or experience of anxiety to one of dizziness, the dizziness serving as an anxiety equivalent. This is seen to imply a change in the locus of experience from the me to the not-me sphere. "Percept-genetic" techniques and a spiral after-effect measurement were used to compare 23 patients with presumed psychogenic vertigo with a control group matched in sex, age, education and occupation. Results of the percept-genetic techniques showed the patients to display stronger signs of affect an

Understanding the impact of climate change on mental health from a Canadian perspective: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change poses a growing threat to health in Canada through both extreme weather and climate events (e.g. wildfires, floods, extreme heat) and gradual environmental changes (e.g. shifting seasonal patterns, ecosystem degradation). While physical health impacts have been well documented, mental health consequences have only recently gained attention. This scoping review synthesizes research examining how climate-related weather events influence mental health outcomes across diverse populations and regions in Canada. METHODS: Following Arksey and O'Malley's five-stage scopin

Cancer care in wartime Ukraine: disruption, resilience and recovery.

Before Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine maintained a well-functioning oncology system, supported by universal health coverage and expanding access to advanced diagnostics and clinical trials. The war caused profound disruptions across all aspects of cancer care-diagnostics, treatment, research and palliative support-yet the system demonstrated exceptional resilience. While hospitals in combat zones were forced to pivot to trauma care, oncology facilities in safer regions were rapidly reorganised and adapted. By late summer 2022, core cancer care in government-controlled t

Cosmetic-Oriented Deep Brain Stimulation: A No-Shave Cranial and Trans-Axillary Fossa Implantable Pulse Generator Implantation Technique.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established therapy for movement disorders. However, conventional DBS often involves complete scalp shaving and a visible subclavicular incision for implantable pulse generator (IPG) placement, which may cause cosmetic and psychological burden, particularly in younger or female patients. To address these issues, we developed a cosmetic-oriented DBS technique combining a no-shave cranial approach with trans-axillary fossa IPG implantation. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective series, we analyzed 60 consecutive patients who underwent DBS

Reduced vagal reserve in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: preliminary results of a case-control HRV study.

OBJECTIVE: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is traditionally viewed through a mechanical lens involving otoconial displacement. However, growing evidence suggests a link between BPPV and psychological stress. This study aims to evaluate autonomic nervous system balance in BPPV patients using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) as a non-invasive proxy for stress-related physiological regulation. METHODS: This prospective, observational, case-control study included a preliminary analysis of 50 participants, comprising 25 patients with clinically confirmed BPPV and demographically matched he

Healing through art: a thematic synthesis within a quasi-systematic review of art's impact on adult mental well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic.

AIM: To synthesise evidence on how both structured art therapy and informal creative engagement supported adult mental well-being during COVID-19-related isolation, and to evaluate their applicability across diverse populations and contexts. METHOD: A quasi-systematic review of qualitative studies from CINAHL, PsycInfo, and PubMed (2020-2024), analysed through thematic synthesis. RESULTS: Analysis of seven studies identified five key themes: (1) emotional processing and expression through symbolic creation, (2) adaptive communication and nonverbal connection, (3) communal support and collect

Replantation After Dental Avulsion: A Scoping Review and Proposal of a Flow Chart.

Dental avulsion, the complete displacement of a tooth from its socket, is a severe dental trauma with a prevalence of 0.5% to 16% of all dental injuries. Replantation of avulsed teeth is common, yet recent studies show high failure rates and unpredictable long-term outcomes. This review examines clinical variables influencing intentional dental replantation decisions and proposes a treatment flow chart. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed-Medline, Scopus, WoS, and Cochrane databases using the keywords "tooth avulsion," "tooth replantation," and "tooth ankylosis." Inclusio

Understanding Mental Health Status of Syrian Refugee and Jordanian Women: Novel Insights from a Comparative Study.

(1) Background: War and displacement are well-known predictors of negative mental health outcomes among affected populations. This is especially relevant for refugees of war, particularly women, who often repress their mental health needs due to family responsibilities, social stigma, and/or cultural pressures. In this study, we compared the mental health status of urban Syrian refugee women (n = 139) with local Jordanian women (n = 160). (2) Methods: Psychometrically validated Afghan Symptom Checklist (ASC), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ) examined psychologi
