OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and efficiency of the disposable circumcision suture device (DCSD) in the surgical treatment of phimosis and redundant prepuce.
METHODS: We randomly assigned 249 outpatients with phimosis or redundant prepuce to be treated with DCSD (n = 129) and by conventional circumcision (CC, n = 120), respectively. Then we compared the safety and efficiency of the two strategies.
RESULTS: Comparisons between DCSD and CC showed that the operation time was (4.02 +/- 0.69) vs (30.8 +/- 4.05) min, blood loss was (1.07 +/- 1.29) vs (8.72 +/- 2.15) ml, intraoperative pain

PURPOSE: Multiuse of the G-probe transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCPC) device can lead to contamination. We evaluated the mechanical stability and clinical efficacy of a disposable sterile barrier for the G-probe footplate.
METHODS: We measured diode laser output with and without the G-probe barrier both before and after cadaver TSCPC (18 shots at 2000 mW for 2000mS). Qualitative analyses of the laser aiming beam were made before each trial in the barrier and nonbarrier state. After each trial, the G-probe barrier was examined for microperforations and footplate for debris and/or damage.

A positive pathergy test in patients with Behçet's disease has been accepted as a diagnostic criterion by many authors, but in recent years it has been claimed that the test has a decreased positivity. Four methods of cleaning hollow-fiber artificial kidneys (HFAKs) for reuse were compared in a prospective study. Each cleaning method was randomly assigned and HFAKs were reused until volume loss was greater than or equal to 15 ml, unless discarded for other reasons. HFAKs cleaned with 0.3 M sodium hydroxide averaged 14.5 uses, significantly better (p less than 0.01) than reverse ultrafiltration (6.4 uses), 3% hydrogen peroxide (5.7 uses), or water flush (4.7 uses). Increasing awareness of prion-related diseases has led to an increase in the number of disposable laryngoscope blades available. We compared 11 disposable and standard re-usable Miller size 1 blades. In this manikin-based study, we studied user satisfaction for field of view at laryngoscopy, build quality and users' willingness to use the blade in an emergency situation. These were found to be better with metal disposable blades (p</=0.001). Vertical and horizontal forces developed during laryngoscopy were greater with plastic than with metal blades.

The characteristics, circumstances, and treatment of 450 pyrexial reactions occurring in 468 patient-months over a period of two and a half years, using a warm single-pass Kiil system, were studied.
