Self-regulation in adults with intermittent explosive disorder and a history of suicide attempts.

Both suicide attempts and aggression aim to cause harm and are associated with numerous personal and societal consequences but differ on intended targets. Aggression towards others is associated with increased risk of suicidal behavior. Research has demonstrated commonalities with impulsiveness and affect regulation for both. This study's purpose was to compare self-regulation between those meeting criteria for a psychiatric condition characterized by unplanned aggression (intermittent explosive disorder [IED]), a lifetime history of a suicide attempt (SA), and those with both (IED + SA), as w

Reflective thinking and mental imagery: a perspective on the development of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Reflective thinking occurs when information stored in long-term memory (LTM) is not sufficient to allow one to respond "automatically" to an object or event. Instead, stored information must be entered into working memory and a novel response or solution produced. In this article I argue that mental imagery plays a central role in this process, and that over the course of normal cognitive development the process of reflective thinking "programs" LTM so that an increasingly large number of tasks can be performed without reflective thinking. Normal cognitive development thus results in a decreas

Parent concerns: Differentiating developmental diagnoses in young children.

BACKGROUND: Screening guidelines recommend listening closely to parent concerns to aid in the identification of children with disabilities, since parent concerns may be predictive of an eventual child diagnosis. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis to examine the extent to which specific parent concerns differentiated six diagnostic categories (i.e., ASD, ASD + ADHD, Disruptive Impulse-Control and Conduct Disorder, developmental delays, and speech and language disorders) among 503 children 36-72 months of age. Data was drawn for a large diagnostic center in the Midwest. RESULTS: We per

Epidemiological study of DSM-5 mental disorders: National mental health survey of Korea - child and adolescent 2022.

Effective mental health policies for children and adolescents rely on accurate evaluations of psychiatric disorder prevalence; however, no nationally representative epidemiological studies on psychiatric disorders among children and adolescents have been conducted in South Korea. This study examined the prevalence and socio-demographic factors of mental disorders among Korean children and adolescents aged 6-17 years using web-based DSM-5 diagnostic tools, the computerized version of the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia. Between September 2022 and February 2023, 142 int

Management of Impulse Control and Related Disorders in Parkinson's Disease: An Expert Consensus.

BACKGROUND: Impulse-control and related behavioral disorders (ICBDs) significantly impact the lives of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and caregivers, with lasting consequences if undiagnosed and untreated. While ICBD pathophysiology and risk factors are well-studied, a standardized severity definition and treatment evidence remain elusive. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to establish international expert consensus on ICBD treatment strategies. To comprehensively address diverse treatment availabilities, experts from various continents were included. METHODS: From 2021 to 2023, global movement

Prevalence and correlates of DSM-IV and DSM-5 Intermittent Explosive Disorder amongst Myanmar refugees living in Malaysia: a population-based study.

AIMS: We investigate the prevalence and risk factor profiles of Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) and comparison between two diagnostic measures for IED in a large population-based study of three ethnic groups of refugees (Chin, Kachin and Rohingya) from Myanmar resettled in Malaysia. METHODS: Trained field personnel interviewed in total 2058 refugees, applying a clustered, probabilistic, proportional-to-size sampling framework and using the DSM-IV and DSM-5 criteria to diagnose IED. We used descriptive and bivariate analyses to explore associations of IED (using DSM IV or DMS 5) with eth

The mediating effects of depression, anxiety, and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder on the association between dopaminergic replacement therapy and impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to longitudinally explore whether and how rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD), depression, and anxiety mediate the association between dopaminergic replacement therapy (DRT) and impulse control disorders (ICDs) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: Subjects were selected from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative. After excluding missing data, 268, 223, 218, 238, and 219 patients with PD diagnosed at 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months prior, respectively, were included. We used the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders, RBD

Limbic hypoconnectivity in idiopathic REM sleep behaviour disorder with impulse control disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Current neuroimaging research has revealed several brain alterations in idiopathic REM sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD) that mirror and precede those reported in PD. However, none have specifically addressed the presence of changes across the reward system, and their role in the emergence of impulse control disorders (ICDs). We aimed to compare the volumetric and functional connectivity characteristics of the reward system in relation to the psychobehavioral profile of patients with iRBD versus healthy controls and PD patients. METHODS: Twenty patients with polysomnography confir

Maladaptive Personality Traits and Their Interaction with Outcome Expectancies in Gaming Disorder and Internet-Related Disorders.

Gambling disorder and gaming disorder have recently been recognized as behavioral addictions in the ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases, 11th edition). The association between behavioral addictions and personality has been examined before, yet there is a lack of studies on maladaptive traits and their relationship to specific outcome expectancies. In study 1, we recruited a community sample (n = 365); in study 2 a sample of treatment-seekers was enrolled (n = 208). Maladaptive personality traits were assessed by the brief form of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (Diagnostic and

Gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells in impulsive aggression: Intermittent explosive disorder compared with non-aggressive healthy and psychiatric controls.

Evidence of chronic, systemic, low levels of inflammation is present in several stress-related psychiatric conditions including schizophrenia, depression, and intermittent explosive disorder (IED). We analyzed leukocyte gene expression (mRNA) to quantify the activity of pro and anti-inflammatory signaling pathways. Work performed in non-aggressive populations has uncovered a Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity (CTRA) characterized by an upregulation of pro-inflammatory gene transcription in chronically stressed individuals. We used pathway-based bioinformatic analyses of genome-wid

Internet gaming disorder and gaming disorder in the context of seeking and not seeking treatment for video-gaming.

The aims of this study were to examine the relationship between Internet gaming disorder (IGD) and gaming disorder (GD) and the degree of concordance between treatment seeking for gaming and IGD/GD. One hundred gamers who sought treatment for their gaming were compared with one hundred gamers who never sought treatment and gamers who met IGD and/or GD criteria were compared with those who did not meet these criteria, regardless of their treatment-seeking status. These comparisons were made using semi-structured diagnostic interviews and self-report psychopathology and symptom measures. There w

Skin picking disorder: prevalence, correlates, and associations with quality of life in a large sample.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that skin picking disorder (SPD) could be a prevalent condition associated with comorbidity and psychosocial dysfunction. However, just a few studies have assessed the prevalence and correlates of SPD in samples from low- and middle-income countries. In addition, the impact of SPD on quality of life (QoL) dimension after multivariable adjustment to potential confounders remains unclear. METHODS: Data were obtained from a Brazilian anonymous Web-based research platform. Participants provided sociodemographic data and completed the modified Skin Picking-Stanford que

Internet gaming disorder: Inadequate diagnostic criteria wrapped in a constraining conceptual model.

Background and aims The paper "Chaos and confusion in DSM-5 diagnosis of Internet Gaming Disorder: Issues, concerns, and recommendations for clarity in the field" by Kuss, Griffiths, and Pontes (in press) critically examines the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for Internet gaming disorder (IGD) and addresses the issue of whether IGD should be reconceptualized as gaming disorder, regardless of whether video games are played online or offline. This commentary provides additional critical perspectives on the concept of IGD. Methods The focus of this commentary is on the addiction model on which the con

Not good enough? Further comments to the wording, meaning, and the conceptualization of Internet Gaming Disorder.

In their commentary, Kuss, Griffiths, and Pontes (2016) criticize the use of the term "Internet" in the recently proposed diagnosis for Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and its use as one of the included diagnostic criteria. We agree with the exclusion of the term "Internet" in the diagnosis, but have some considerations to the comments regarding the nine criteria for IGD. Specifically, we discuss the meaning, the wording, and the importance of the criteria, as well as the importance of distress or functional impairment in the proposed diagnosis. We also address the possibility of categorizing I

From Pong to Pokemon Go, catching the essence of the Internet Gaming Disorder diagnosis.

Taking as a starting point, this commentary proposes some issues regarding the diagnosis of Internet Gaming Disorder discussed in Kuss et al. (2016). In our opinion, the confusion in DSM-5 diagnosis could be due to the weak starting point in building the criteria. The criteria such as functional impairment and stability of the dysfunctional behavior are considered. It is suggested that avatar identification, playing motivations, and types of video games should be considered for diagnosis. The diagnostic process is highly influenced by social context and the rapid development of video game indu

Development of the brief Spanish Cocaine Craving Questionnaire-General.

Combining two different samples of cocaine users (N = 183), we tested the factor structure of a brief (12-item), Spanish version of the Cocaine Craving Questionnaire-General using confirmatory factor analysis. The four-factor model provided excellent fit to the measure. Moreover, the measure significantly differentiated between recent cocaine users and abstainers, as well as between participants with different levels of severity of drug-use history. Factor 1 expresses highly intense and overwhelming desires, Factor 2 expresses lack of self-control over cocaine use, Factor 3 items express lack
