Running, swimming and diving modifies neuroprotecting globins in the mammalian brain.

The vulnerability of the human brain to injury following just a few minutes of oxygen deprivation with submergence contrasts markedly with diving mammals, such as Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii), which can remain underwater for more than 90 min while exhibiting no neurological or behavioural impairment. This response occurs despite exposure to blood oxygen levels concomitant with human unconsciousness. To determine whether such aquatic lifestyles result in unique adaptations for avoiding ischaemic-hypoxic neural damage, we measured the presence of circulating (haemoglobin) and resident…

Diving-related pulmonary oedema as an unusual presentation of alcoholic cardiomyopathy.

Diving-related pulmonary oedema (DRPO) is an uncommon and incompletely understood phenomenon. Pulmonary oedema has been rarely documented in shallow water. It is also associated with cold water and exertion and has been seen in swimmers as well as divers with no underlying heart disease. We describe an otherwise well 69-year-old lady who developed diving-related pulmonary oedema on her second and third dives in a shallow, heated pool. Follow-up echocardiogram revealed moderate global left ventricular dysfunction with an ejection fraction of 37%. There was a history of alcohol consumption of ha…

Diving methods and decompression sickness incidence of Miskito Indian underwater harvesters.

Diving conditions, dive profiles, and symptoms of decompression sickness (DCS) in a group of Miskito Indian underwater seafood harvesters are described. Dive profiles for 5 divers were recorded with dive computers, and DCS symptoms were assessed by neurological examination and interview. Divers averaged 10 dives a day over a 7-day period with a mean depth of 67 +/- 7 FSW (306 +/- 123 kPa) and average in-water time of 20.6 +/- 6.3 minutes. Limb pain was reported on 10 occasions during 35 man-days of diving. Symptoms were typically managed with analgesic medication rather than recompression. Ind…

Magnetic resonance findings in scuba diving-related spinal cord decompression sickness.

Scuba diving is associated with risk of severe decompression sickness (DCS type II), which results from rapid reduction of the environmental pressure sufficient to cause the formation into tissue or blood of inert gas bubbles previously loaded within tissues as a soluble phase. DCS type II constitutes a unique subset of ischemic insults to the central nervous system (CNS) with primarily involvement of the spinal cord. Ten patients with diving-related barotrauma underwent neurologic examination. Two of them presented progressive sensory and motor loss in the extremities at admission and were pr…

Impact of a sports project centered on scuba diving for adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus: New guidelines for adolescent recreational diving, a modification of the French regulations.

BACKGROUND: Recreational scuba diving has been authorized for type 1 diabetics over 18 years old - the age of majority in France - since 2004, but it remained forbidden for younger diabetics by the French underwater federation (FFESSM). Here, we present a study to evaluate: - the conditions under which diving could be authorized for 14- to 18 year olds with type 1 diabetes; - the value of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) while diving. A secondary objective was to monitor the impact of diving on the teenagers' quality of life. SUBJECT AND METHODS: Sixteen adolescents (14-17.5 years old) wer…

Bowhead whale foraging dives are defined by speed and body orientation.

Quantifying the time baleen whales spend foraging is central to understanding the extent to which climate driven shifts in low-trophic prey may affect energy acquisition. To date, the most comprehensive understanding of balaenid (bowhead and right whale) feeding behavior comes from studies using inertial sensing tags (biologgers). Here, periods of ram filtration were inferred under predictable foraging conditions where whales targeted a deep, diapausing prey layer. However, foraging conditions are increasingly variable in high latitudes and zooplankton vertical distribution, abundance and biom

Post-dive decompression bubbles in scuba divers: A scoping review.

Scuba diving can cause venous gas emboli (VGE) formation upon ascent, due to inert gas accumulation in tissues. This scoping review examines the breadth of research on decompression bubbles in humans following hyperbaric exposures. The study aimed to address three research questions: 1) What decompres-sion exposures have been used to record bubble data in scuba divers? 2) How are post-decompression VGE assessed and graded? 3) What factors influence post-decompression bubble formation in scuba divers, and what is their impact? We identified 172 papers, involving 6271 divers, examined for VGE us…

A deep dive into four thyroglobulin immunoassays from analytical perspective.

BACKGROUNDS: Serum thyroglobulin immunometric assays (sTg) are crucial for monitoring differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) treatment. However, challenges such as anti-thyroglobulin autoantibodies (TgAb) and assay variability hinder evaluations. This study assessed four sTg methods-three second-generation (Architect, Access, Elecsys) and one first-generation (Immulite)-following Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines. METHODS: The study compared sTg(Architect), sTg(Access), sTg(Elecsys), and sTg(Immulite). Precision was evaluated per

Increased ventilatory response to carbon dioxide after dive training.

INTRODUCTION: Divers are reported to have a lower ventilatory response to elevated levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂) than non-divers. Hypoventilation with CO₂ retention during diving is potentially dangerous. It is unknown if CO₂ retention is largely inherited or develops during diving training. We aimed to investigate if a military dive training course would influence the ventilatory response to CO₂. METHODS: Novice rebreather Divers with Amphibious Rangers as controls were tested at baseline, after 12 weeks of water exercise training, and after 15 weeks of diving: participants rebreathed in a …

A deep dive into radiation keratopathy; Going beyond the current frontierss.

Radiotherapy is one of the conventional treatments for head and neck malignancies. Despite the implementation of protective measures to minimize the detrimental impact on healthy tissues surrounding the radiation site, radiation keratopathy remains a prevalent complication. We aimed to establish a mouse model of radiation keratopathy to characterize the pathophysiology of the disease and enable future identification of potential treatments. Thirty-six mice were divided equally into six groups. One eye of each mouse was irradiated with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 Gy and the other eye used as a co

Narcotic Nitrogen Effects Persist after a Simulated Deep Dive.

Background and Objectives: Scuba divers often experience persistent inert gas narcosis (IGN) even after surfacing. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that breathing oxygen (O2) before surfacing can reduce postdive IGN. Materials and Methods: A group of 58 experienced divers underwent a 5 min dive at a depth of 50 m in a multi-place hyperbaric chamber. They were decompressed using air (air group). Another group of 28 divers (O2 group) breathed 100% O2 during the end of decompression. Prior to and after the dive, all participants performed the Sharpened Romberg test (SRT) and a modified twe
