Differential contributions of family and peer factors to the etiology of narcotic addiction.

This retrospective study investigated relationships among early family circumstances, peer associations, and narcotic addiction in a sample of 601 urban males. Results of logistic regression analyses indicated that the extent of deviant behavior among close friends at ages 12-14 and disruption in family structure (parental divorce/separation) prior to age 11 were significantly associated with narcotic addiction. Additional regression analyses indicated that deviant behavior among family members, as well as family disruption, experienced prior to age 11, also increased the probability of associ…

Is the cluster risk model of parental adversities better than the cumulative risk model as an indicator of childhood physical abuse?: findings from two representative community surveys.

BACKGROUND: Screening strategies for childhood physical abuse (CPA) need to be improved in order to identify those most at risk. This study uses two regionally representative community samples to examine whether a cluster or cumulative model of risk indicators (i.e. parental divorce, parental unemployment, and parental addictions) explains a larger proportion of the variation in CPA. METHODS: Data were drawn from Statistics Canada's National Population Health Survey (1994-1995) and Canadian Community Health Survey 3.1 (2005). Response rates were greater than 80% in both samples. Each survey h…

Editorial: In the Service of Our Children.

The impact of early parental loss is a well-known and well-documented risk factor for adverse mental health outcomes.1 Approximately 5% of children will lose a parent before the age of 18 years.2 Depression, acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, behavioral disorders (including delinquency), substance abuse, and increased rates of suicide have all been correlated with parental deaths during childhood.1,3 Although the greatest risk occurs during the first 2 years following the loss, the risks continue. Family resilience and the fortunes of war.

Military families have been a subject of concern due to increasing divorce rates and child maltreatment that have been directly linked to the number and length of combat deployments. In contrast many military families show positive resilience in the wake of multiple deployments. This article looks at several special situations where military families are faced with serious challenges after deployment: soldiers returning with post-traumatic stress disorder, soldiers receiving serious injuries, and those killed in action. McCubbin's Family Resilience Model is applied as a theoretical tool for un…

Participants were 60 children and adolescents from a residential treatment facility. Most had experienced neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse, and their parents had their parential rights terminated. Measures of symptomatology indicated that children reported low levels of depressive symptoms, whereas caregivers reported the children were experiencing significant psychological problems. Children used avoidant coping strategies more o…
