A Multi-Perspective Review on Dengue Research.

Dengue fever is a disease which is caused by a family of viruses named Flaviviridae which are transmitted by female Aedes mosquitoes. Today, this is endemic in more than 100 nations in the World Health Organization's African, Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia and Western Pacific locales. The treatment of typical dengue is focused on relieving the symptoms and signs. Carica papaya is a very common plant whose leaf extract is used in the treatment of this disease. Despite extensive research on Dengue, not a single vaccine or anti-viral drug was available until 2016 (a partially ef

Evaluating Initial Empiric Therapy for Neutropenic Fever in Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus-Colonized Patients.

OBJECTIVES: Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus infections impact mortality in oncology patients. Given the low rate of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus bacteremia, low virulence of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus, and advent of rapid diagnostic systems, vancomycin-resistant enterococcus-directed empiric therapy in vancomycin-resistant enterococcus-colonized patients with neutropenic fever may be unnecessary, promoting increased antimicrobial resistance, drug-related toxicity, and cost. METHODS: Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus-colonized adults admitted for hematopoietic stem cell transplan

[From willow bark to acetylsalicylic acid].

Acetylsalicylic acid is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. Its ancestry the salicylates, including salicin and salicylic acid, are found in the bark and leaves of the willow and poplar trees. The ancient Sumerians and Egyptians, as well as Hippocrates, Celsus, Pliny the Elder, Dioscorides and Galen used these natural products as remedies for pain, fever and inflammation. In the Middle Ages these remedies were used for fever and rheumatism by Hildegard of Bingen and Henrik Harpestreng. The first "clinical trial" was reported by Edward Stone in 1763 with a successful treatment of ma

Transient Fever Response After ECT in a Patient with Catatonic Schizophrenia: A Case Report.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective and safe treatment method for many psychiatric disorders. In general medical practice, ECT may cause side effects as most other treatment methods do. Headache, myalgia, nausea, vomiting, confusion, anterograde amnesia are common side effects of electroconvulsive therapy. Fever; in addition to general medical conditions such as infection, malignancy, connective tissue diseases, drug treatments, malignant hyperthermia, convulsions, it can also occur due to conditions such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), serotonin syndrome, catatonia, malig

Therapeutic drug monitoring-guided linezolid salvage therapy for Lacticaseibacillus paracasei infective endocarditis: A case report.

We report a rare case of infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Lacticaseibacillus paracasei (formerly Lactobacillus paracasei) that was managed with intravenous linezolid as salvage therapy. A 38-year-old woman presented with a three-week history of intermittent fever and cutaneous manifestations, and was diagnosed with IE caused by Lacticaseibacillus paracasei. The initial ampicillin/clindamycin therapy was discontinued due to suspected drug fever, and subsequent levofloxacin monotherapy was complicated by a drug-induced rash. Linezolid monotherapy was therefore initiated as salvage therapy,

Enteric fever in endemic areas of Indonesia: an increasing problem of resistance.

Reported levels of antibiotic resistance in Salmonella Typhi from South Sulawesi, Indonesia were very low (< 1%) before 2001 and chloramphenicol remained the treatment of choice. Since 2001 however resistance has been rising and in 2007 6.8% of isolates were resistant to all three first line drugs: Ampicillin, chloramphenicol and co-trimoxazole. Ciprofloxacin resistance is currently at 3.90 %. At the same time there has been an increase in the number of reported cases. This may be because of improved diagnostics or it may be a genuine outbreak of drug resistant S. Typhi. In conclusion drug res

Anesthetic management of the parturient with fever and infection.

Fever is a common clinical problem in labor and delivery suites. It can result from a variety of infectious microorganisms, tissue trauma, malignancy, drug administration, and endocrine and immunologic disorders. Infection is the most common cause of fever, reflecting the effect of pyrogens on the hypothalamus. The diagnosis of infection in pregnancy often raises questions about the safety of regional anesthesia in febrile patients. Despite this concern, and lack of universal guidelines, it has now been well established that the presence of infection and fever in labor does not always contrain

Acetaminophen reduces lipopolysaccharide-induced fever by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2.

Acetaminophen is one of the world's most commonly used drugs to treat fever and pain, yet its mechanism of action has remained unclear. Here we tested the hypothesis that acetaminophen blocks fever through inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2), by monitoring lipopolysaccharide induced fever in mice with genetic manipulations of enzymes in the prostaglandin cascade. We exploited the fact that lowered levels of a specific enzyme make the system more sensitive to any further inhibition of the same enzyme. Mice were immune challenged by an intraperitoneal injection of bacterial wall lipopolysacch

Cyproheptadine hydrochloride inhibits African swine fever viral replication in vitro.

African swine fever (ASF) is an infectious disease caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), and has a high mortality rate. It has caused serious socioeconomic consequences worldwide. Currently, there are no available commercial vaccines or antiviral drug interventions. D1133L is one of the key genes for ASFV replication and antiviral drug screening. In this study, a virtual screening software program, PyRx, was used to screen libraries of compounds against the potential drug target D1133L. Twelve compounds with a high affinity for ASFV D1133L were screened, and cyproheptadine hydrochlor

Oxaliplatin-related interstitial pneumonia with high-grade fever and relative bradycardia as the presenting signs: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Although drug-induced interstitial pneumonia is a well-known adverse side-effect of cancer chemotherapy, the disease is difficult to detect in the early phase. We report a case of oxaliplatin-induced interstitial pneumonia in which eosinophilia and high-grade fever with relative bradycardia were useful presenting signs for the early diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old Japanese woman with postoperative recurrent rectal cancer (peritoneal dissemination and liver metastasis) was admitted to our hospital because of productive cough and consolidation on thoracic computed tomogr

[A case of miliary tuberculosis complicating acute Q fever].

A 73-year-old man was admitted with fever and abnormal liver function test. After admission, his fever persisted in spite of administrating a variety of antibiotics. He was diagnosed as acute Q fever on the basis of a high titer of IgM antibodies against phase II Coxiella burneti. His fever resolved after starting minocycline, but biliary enzymes continued to be elevated. Transbronchial lung biopsy and percutaneous liver biopsy revealed caseating granulomas and Mycobacterium tuberculosis was detected by culture. Miliary tuberculosis was diagnosed and his biliary enzymes declined after starting

Working Towards an Appropriate Use of Ibuprofen in Children: An Evidence-Based Appraisal.

Ibuprofen is the most widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for the treatment of inflammation, mild-to-moderate pain and fever in children, and is the only NSAID approved for use in children aged ≥3 months. Its efficacy and safety profile have led to its increasing use in paediatric care, even without medical prescription. However, an increase of suspected adverse reactions to ibuprofen has been noted in concomitance with the raised, often medically unsupervised, consumption of the drug. The purpose of this work was a critical review of the paediatric literature over the las

[Permanent deafness following typhoid fever: case report from Dakar, Senegal].

Severe infections due to Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi are still common in sub-Saharan Africa where many patients are empirically treated for malaria. In addition to the usual clinical signs and complications of typhoid fever, clinicians practicing in high incidence areas must be aware of less common manifestations. The purpose of this report is to describe a case involving an 18-year-old boy who presented with quinine-resistant febrile coma. The final diagnosis was typhoid fever. After recovery the patient presented complete deafness. Discussion raises the question of whether deaf

Salmonella Typhi: A Review of Antibiogram Journey in Developing Countries.

Typhoid fever poses a significant health challenge in low- and middleincome countries (LMiCs), impacting millions of individuals across various age groups. Its prevalence is particularly pronounced in South Asia. Factors contributing to its transmission in South Asia include rapid unplanned urbanization, urban-rural disparities, provision of poor water and sanitation facilities, and open defecation. The mortality rate of typhoid fever is up to 1%, and those who survive have a protracted period of poor health and carry an enormous financial burden. The treatment is further complicated by the em

[DRUG-INDUCED LUPUS CAUSED BY LONG TERM MINOCYCLINE TREATMENT FOR ACNE VULGARIS].

An 18-year-old Japanese girl had received oral minocycline 200mg daily for treatment of acne vulgaris since 16 years old. She had a fever three months before admission, followed by joint pains in her knees, elbows and several proximal interphalangeal joints one month before admission. She was referred to our hospital because of a high serum level of anti-DNA antibody. She had already discontinued oral minocycline five weeks before admission, because she missed her medication refilled. On admission, the arthralgia and fever spontaneously resolved, and there were no laboratory evidence of hypoco
