A review of 82 (68 male) Kelantanese patients with non-alcoholic cirrhosis who underwent gastroduodenal endoscopy revealed duodenal and gastric ulcers in 4.9% and 7.3% of patients respectively. Comparing with prevalence rates of peptic ulcer disease reported in the literature, there was no evidence to suggest that duodenal ulcers occur more frequently in patients with non-alcoholic cirrhosis. There is a suggestion, albeit a tenuous one, that non-alcoholic cirrhosis may be associated with gastric ulceration.

Fifty patients who presented with symptoms suggestive of disease related to peptic acidity having endoscopic evidence of duodenitis were analysed. Endoscopic duodenal biopsy was done in all these patients. Histologically duodenitis was labelled if there was infiltration of epithelial layer. Male to female ratio was found to be 3:2. A 58-year-old man underwent upper gastrointestinal surveillance endoscopy for Barrett's oesophagus. This showed a possible gastric ulcer, although histological examination was normal. Follow-up endoscopy showed white ridges in the distal duodenum and these were subjected to biopsy.
