Exploring the genomic and antimicrobial resistance tapestry: comparative insights into Salmonella enterica serotypes Agona, Braenderup, Muenchen, and Panama in Latin American surface waters.

Surface waters function as ecological niches where Salmonella enterica can persist and disseminate to fresh produce production systems. We examined the genomic characteristics of S. enterica serotypes Agona (n = 86), Braenderup (n = 47), Muenchen (n = 53), and Panama (n = 69) isolates from surface waters in Chile, Mexico, and Brazil between 2019 and 2022. Mexican isolates consistently displayed a higher occurrence of genotypic antimicrobial resistance (AMR) than Chilean and Brazilian isolates. All S. Agona isolates exhibited the presence of fosA7.2, while qnrB19 emerged as the predominant AMR

Environmental and sociodemographic factors associated with zoonotic pathogen occurrence in Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) from Windsor, Ontario.

AIMS: Rat-associated zoonotic pathogen transmission at the human-wildlife interface is a public health concern in urban environments where Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) thrive on abundant anthropogenic resources and live in close contact with humans and other animal species. To identify potential factors influencing zoonotic pathogen occurrence in rats, we investigated associations between environmental and sociodemographic factors and Leptospira interrogans and Bartonella spp. infections in rats from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, while controlling for the potential confounding effects of animal

Cumulative Blast Exposure Estimate Model for Special Operations Forces Combat Soldiers.

Special Operations Forces (SOF) Service members endure frequent exposures to blast and overpressure mechanisms given their high training tempo. The link between cumulative subconcussive blasts on short- and long-term neurological impairment is largely understudied. Neurodegenerative diseases such as brain dysfunction, cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia may develop with chronic exposures. This hypothesis remains unproven because of lack of ecologically valid occupational blast exposure surveillance among SOF Service members. The purpose of the study was to measure occupa

Measurement of plasma corticosterone and fecal glucocorticoid metabolites in the chicken (Gallus domesticus), the great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), and the goshawk (Accipiter gentilis).

A method for the non-invasive measurement of glucocorticoid metabolites in feces of chickens was established and validated. After high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) the presence of at least two fecal immunoreactives was demonstrated, one co-eluting with authentic corticosterone, whereas the second substance migrates close to corticosterone sulphate. We investigated the relationship between corticosterone in blood plasma obtained by a vena brachialis catheter and fecal samples in groups of five chickens after an ACTH and a dexamethasone injection to stimulate and to suppress adrenal

Contributions of birds to the feeding of ticks at host community level: Effects of tick burden, host density and yearly fluctuations.

The eco-epidemiology of tick-borne diseases hinges on the abundance and distribution of hosts that sustain tick populations and the pathogens they carry. Research into the role of bird species in the feeding of Ixodes ricinus ticks, the primary tick species of veterinary and public health importance in Europe, remains scarce. This study endeavors to bridge these knowledge gaps by (i) assessing the density of feeding ticks (DFT) within a bird community to pinpoint species making substantial contributions, and (ii) exploring interannual variations in DFT over an extended timeline. Furthermore, w

A Vibrio cholerae Core Genome Multilocus Sequence Typing Scheme To Facilitate the Epidemiological Study of Cholera.

Core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) has gained popularity in recent years in epidemiological research and subspecies-level classification. cgMLST retains the intuitive nature of traditional MLST but offers much greater resolution by utilizing significantly larger portions of the genome. Here, we introduce a cgMLST scheme for Vibrio cholerae, a bacterium abundant in marine and freshwater environments and the etiologic agent of cholera. A set of 2,443 core genes ubiquitous in V. cholerae were used to analyze a comprehensive data set of 1,262 clinical and environmental strains collect

The impact of school sports atmosphere on college students' social anxiety: the mediating role of exercise self-efficacy and the moderating effect of gender.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is a common psychological challenge among college students and is closely associated with impaired interpersonal functioning and reduced wellbeing. Although physical activity has been linked to better mental health, limited research has examined whether the broader school sports atmosphere is associated with social anxiety and through which psychological pathways this association may operate. Drawing on Ecological Systems Theory and Social Cognitive Theory, this study investigated whether exercise self-efficacy mediates the relationship between school sports atmosphe

Hidden charisma: ethno-ornithological knowledge and attitudes of local communities toward a threatened endemic pheasant in the Upper Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethno-ornithological knowledge plays a key role in the conservation and management of birds and their habitats. However, the cultural roles and significance of birds in Ethiopia, as well as the threats to their survival within human cultural contexts remain largely underexplored. This study investigated the socio-economic, demographic, spatiotemporal and behavioral factors that influence the knowledge and attitude of local communities toward Harwood's Francolins in the Upper Blue Nile Basin. METHODS: We conducted a quantitative survey with questionnaires administered to 379 househ

Microbiological characteristics of different tongue coatings in adults.

BACKGROUND: Tongue coating is an important health indicator in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The tongue coating microbiome can distinguish disease patients from healthy controls. To study the relationship between different types of tongue coatings and health, we analyzed the species composition of different types of tongue coatings and the co-occurrence relationships between microorganisms in Chinese adults. From June 2019 to October 2020, 158 adults from Hangzhou and Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province, were enrolled. We classified the TCM tongue coatings into four different types: thin wh

Awareness among general population attending Civil Hospital Karachi about risk factors associated with infertility.

This paper is concerned with how those who prescribe antimicrobials should consider the wider repercussions of their actions. It is accepted that in an ecological system, pressure will cause evolution; this is also the case with antimicrobials, the result being the development of resistance and the therapeutic failure of drugs. To an extent, this can be ameliorated through advances by the pharmaceutical industry, but that should not stop us from critically appraising our use and modifying our behavior to slow this process down. Up to 50% of prescribing in human medicine and 80% in veterinary m

A Compendium Review of the Global Epidemiology of Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases: Regional Insights from Türkiye.

Vector-borne diseases have historically posed significant threats to plants, humans, domestic animals, and wildlife, with their impact being especially pronounced in tropical and subtropical regions. Among these, tick-borne diseases (TBDs) have emerged as an increasingly critical global concern. This growing threat is largely driven by the expanding geographic range of ticks and the wide array of pathogens they transmit, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, fungi, and infectious prion proteins. The global cumulative economic impact of the challenges caused by ticks and TBDs contri

Procyanidins and Bifidobacterium infantis alleviate anxiety and depression-like behavior in alcohol use disorder withdrawal mice via the gut-immune-brain axis.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is frequently comorbid with anxiety and depression, conditions closely tied to gut microbiota dysbiosis, systemic inflammation, and immune imbalance-particularly between pro-inflammatory Th17 cells and regulatory T (Treg) cells. These peripheral immune perturbations can propagate neuroinflammation and disrupt central myelination, but the precise gut-immune-brain myelin cascade in AUD remains poorly defined. PURPOSE: This study investigated whether a combination of procyanidins (PC) and Bifidobacterium infantis (B. infantis)-administered either individual

Diversification of biofilm architecture among freshwater Pararheinheimera isolates.

UNLABELLED: Extracellular matrices that scaffold microbial biofilms offer a rich source of polymeric materials with a range of potential applications. However, our understanding of these matrices is largely restricted to model organisms that form biofilms with specific architectures. Examining biofilms from understudied niches has the potential to identify extracellular matrices with novel properties. Here, we targeted a resource-rich boundary at the top of the water column known as the air-liquid interface (ALI). ALIs lack a solid substrate for cellular attachment, suggesting that microbes ut

Dynamic Changes and Correlations of Physicochemical Parameters, Flavor Compounds and Microbial Communities During Soy Sauce Koji Production.

Koji production is a critical process that determines the flavor and quality of the final soy sauce product. However, the complex mechanisms underlying microbial metabolism and the evolution of the physicochemical environment still require further analysis. This study focuses on three parallel koji rooms in an industrialized koji fermentation process. This work tracked the dynamics of physicochemical indices, volatile flavor compounds, and microbial communities over a full 40 h cycle. Data integration and correlation analysis elucidated the close linkage between the microbial community, the fe

Multi-level determinants of vaccination of the American Indian and Alaska Native population: a comprehensive overview.

CONTEXT: American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIANs) are historically disadvantaged, losing 20 million (95%) of their population largely through epidemics since 1,520 and continuing lower overall vaccination coverage than other races. Determinants of this lower coverage are underexamined. METHODS: Among peer-reviewed relevant articles since 1968, 39 studied AIANs solely; 47 drew general population samples, including AIANs. We employed rigorous economic definitions and framework of Individual Decision-Making Under Uncertainty. The Social-Ecological model identified determinants and mechanisms

Genomic characterization of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli and its potential as a marker organism for antimicrobial resistance.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) poses a threat to poultry and public health due to its ability to cause avian disease, potentially contribute to foodborne illness, and carry antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Given its ubiquitous nature and capacity to persist in diverse environments, APEC has potential as a marker organism for tracking antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in poultry production systems and surrounding environments. This study investigated the prevalence, genotypic diversity, AMR profile, and potential transmission of APEC across different production stages in commercial

Marburg Virus: A Looming Threat Nigeria Cannot Ignore.

TO THE EDITOR: Marburg virus, a filovirus closely related to Ebola, causes a severe haemorrhagic illness with case fatality rates ranging from 24 % to 88 %, depending on the timeliness and strength of the outbreak response [1]. Transmission occurs through contact with infected body fluids or contaminated materials, and via exposure to infected fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus), which have been recorded in several Nigerian ecological zones [1,2]. Deforestation, wildlife trade, and settlement encroachment further elevate spill-over risk.Nigeria's experiences with Lassa fever reveal enduring str
