Hematocrit levels and race: an argument against the adoption of separate standards in screening for anemia.

The average hematocrit levels of black children have been widely reported to be about two to three percent lower than those of white children. Until recently, the relative contributions of economic, nutritional, and genetic factors to these differences have been unspecified. Based on new evidence and reanalysis of past data, however, some investigators now argue that genetic differences exist which transcend economic status. Separate screening standards are thus recommended for black children-standards which would define fewer as anemic. The present paper discusses methodological inadequacies

Objective and perceived food environment and household economic resources related to food insecurity in older adults living alone in rural areas.

BACKGROUND: Limited attention has been paid to an association between food environment and household economic resources related to food expenditure in food-insecure seniors. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between factors of economic resource, food environment, and food insecurity in single seniors residing in rural areas of South Korea. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 170 single senior households aged 65 years or over residing in rural areas. Face-to-face interviews were performed to collect data on demographic characteristics, household economic re

Structural violence and schizophrenia.

Despite clear evidence of a substantial biological basis to schizophrenia, there is also evidence that social, economic and political factors have considerable relevance to the clinical features, treatment and outcome of the illness. Individuals from lower socio-economic groups have an earlier age at first presentation and longer durations of untreated illness, both of which are associated with poor outcome. Individuals with schizophrenia are over-represented in the homeless population. Migration is associated with increased rates of mental illness, including schizophrenia, and this relationsh

Economic downturn results in tick-borne disease upsurge.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of zoonoses is due both to changes in human activities and to changes in their natural wildlife cycles. One of the most significant vector-borne zoonoses in Europe, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), doubled in incidence in 1993, largely as a consequence of the socio-economic transition from communism to capitalism and associated environmental changes. METHODS: To test the effect of the current economic recession, unemployment in 2009 and various socio-economic indices were compared to weather indices (derived from principal component analyses) as predictors for the chan

Local Economic Conditions Affect Aedes albopictus Management.

Invasive mosquitoes are an emerging public health issue, as many species are competent vectors for pathogens. We assessed how multiple environmental and socio-economic factors affected the engagement of municipalities in Italy (n = 7679) in actions against Aedes albopictus, an invasive mosquito affecting human health and well-being, between 2000 and 2020. We collected information about mosquito control from official documents and municipal websites and modeled the role played by multiple environmental and socioeconomic factors characterizing each municipality through the random forest algorith

Coeliac disease is more common in children with high socio-economic status.

AIM: There are a number of genetic and environmental factors that are associated with an increased risk of developing coeliac disease. Our aim was to determine whether socio-economic deprivation increases or reduces the development of the disease. METHODS: A cross-sectional study identified all children <16 years old diagnosed with coeliac disease in the same tertiary paediatric centre between January 1995 and December 2011. Data, including age at diagnosis and postcode, were collected and linked with the quintile rank of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation score 2008, a measure of socio-

Assessment of environmental and socio-economic stress.

Since long, socio-economic status, often expressed as an index, is known to correlate with health outcomes like behavioural problems. We constructed a new index that encapsulated not only economic and social but also environmental stressors (ESES), using data of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents, a nation-wide representative surveillance of 17,641 participants aged between 0-17 years. Different factors were selected to account for socio-economic stress (low parental education, low household income, low occupational status of the householder), domes

Cost-of-illness in multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy.

Multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy are disabling neurodegenerative disorders, also known as atypical parkinsonian syndromes. Currently, no health economic evaluations of these diseases are available. The objective of this study was to evaluate disease-related costs in German patients with multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy and to identify cost-driving factors. We recruited 101 consecutive patients with multiple system atrophy (n = 54) and progressive supranuclear palsy (n = 47) in four German specialised movement disorder clinics. The health econ

Association of Economic Well-Being With Comorbid Conditions in Patients Undergoing Carpal Tunnel Release.

PURPOSE: Medical comorbidities have been associated with the development of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), severity at the time of presentation, and outcomes of carpal tunnel release (CTR). Socioeconomic factors have also been associated with worse function in patients with CTS at presentation and after surgery. However, the effects of economic well-being on the prevalence of medical comorbidities in patients with CTS have not been well-described. The objective of this study was to determine whether economic well-being is associated with medical comorbidities in a cohort of patients undergoing

Regional disparities in PPCPs contamination of urban wastewater treatment plants: Unveiling influential factors and ecological effects.

This study investigates the discharge of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into natural waters, highlighting a significant correlation with regional human activities. Despite the complexity of assessing factors influencing PPCPs sources, it remains underexplored. By conducting an extensive literature review of seven categories of PPCPs in WWTPs across five typical regions of China, the study reveals both similarities and disparities in PPCPs composition. Correlation analysis and four machine learning algorithms are employed to identify

Child Abuse and Neglect Risk in Times of Crisis.

Child abuse and neglect impacts millions of children each year, and the many detrimental impacts on health, well-being, and the economy persist across the lifespan and intergenerationally. Risk and protective factors make child abuse and neglect more or less likely, but during humanitarian crises like economic downturns and health crises, the context and conditions are ripe for increased risk of perpetration and victimization. Prevention is possible when we take a public health approach, and every sector assures the conditions that bolster families, like concrete and economic supports, access

The Temporal Impact of Economic Insecurity on Child Maltreatment: A Systematic Review.

Economically insecure children experience 3-9 times more maltreatment than economically secure children. Although economic insecurity is associated with child physical abuse, neglect, and psychological maltreatment, there have been no systematic reviews dedicated to the relation between familial economic insecurity and child maltreatment. This is problematic because multiple forms of familial economic insecurity-including debt, material hardship, income, unemployment, and income transfers-are related to child maltreatment. These findings, however, are not causal or reliably replicated across s

A Mixed Methods Approach to Equity and Justice Research: Insights from Research on Children's Reasoning About Economic Inequality.

Mixed methods research approaches are gaining traction across various social science disciplines, including among developmental scientists. In this chapter, we discuss the utility of a mixed methods research approach in examining issues related to equity and justice. We incorporate a brief overview of quantitative and qualitative monomethod research approaches in our larger discussion of the advantages, procedures, and considerations of employing a mixed methods design to advance developmental science from an equity and justice perspective. To better illustrate the theoretical and practical si
