A novel treatment strategy for eyebrow transplantation in an ectodermal dysplasia patient.

BACKGROUND: Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a hereditary syndrome which affects the ectodermal layer and thus appendages originating from this layer like hair, teeth, and sweet glands. The hairs of the scalp and eyebrows are sparse and broken and sometimes absent in ED patients. We reported a case of ED who underwent successful hair transplantation for her eyebrows. CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old female with previously known Ed referred to our clinic because of absent lateral eyebrow hairs. She also had hypodontia (she lacked incisor teeth) and hypohydrosis. We designed a hair transplantation proced…

Prevalence and prevention of severe complications of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia in infancy.

OBJECTIVE: To re-evaluate the mortality of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) and the prevalence of hyperpyrexia and possible neurological sequelae in affected infants. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional postal survey was conducted among parents of 100 children with ectodermal dysplasia who had been registered with the German-Swiss-Austrian patient support group at any time point within the past 10 years. Detailed questionnaires referring to the first year of life were evaluated statistically. RESULTS: 63% of parents returned completed surveys, identifying 57% of children as patients with …

Quantification of taurodontism: interests in the early diagnosis of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to provide a quantification of taurodontism in Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia (HED) and to report its occurrence in a cohort of HED patients to assess phenotypic-genotypic correlations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of 68 HED patients retrospectively reviewed, 16 patients aged 7-51 years were selected and compared with a control sample (n = 351). The pulp surface index of the first lower permanent molar was calculated from the panoramic radiograph of each individual, and statistical comparisons between the HED patients and the control sample were performed. RE…

Ectodermal dysplasias: an overview and update of clinical and molecular-functional mechanisms.

The ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) are a large and complex group of disorders. In various combinations, they all share anomalies in hair, teeth, nails, and sweat gland function. The anomalies affecting the epidermis and epidermal appendages are extremely variable. Many are associated with malformations in other organs and systems. Clinical overlap is present among EDs. Few causative genes have been identified, to date. Most of the EDs present multisystem involvement with abnormal development of structures also derived from mesoderm. In the last few years, it has become evident that gene expressio…

The management of ectodermal dysplasia and severe hypodontia. International conference statements.

An international conference on ectodermal dysplasias and hypodontia, held in London in 2004, featured a session devoted to the management of the ectodermal dysplasias and severe hypodontia. This paper presents a set of statements prepared by an international specialist panel, including representatives of patient support groups, who presented and subsequently debated a series of papers on this subject. The following topics were explored: potential roles of patient support groups; core care standards, including the roles and composition of medical and dental multidisciplinary teams for treating …

Early prosthetic treatment of patients with ectodermal dysplasia: a clinical report.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disorder of ectodermal origin. The early orthodontic treatment of 2 young boys suffering from hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with partial maxillary and complete mandibular anodontia of the primary dentition is described. Both were treated with removable maxillary partial and mandibular complete dentures with individualized occlusion and age-appropriate artificial teeth. The results were significant improvements in speech, masticatory function, and facial esthetics, contributing to the development of normal dietary habits, and the improved an…

Treatment of congenital ectodermal dysplasia with zygomatic implants: a case report.

Dental abnormalities associated with ectodermal dysplasia (ED) can result in severe functional and esthetic problems. To correct these problems, dental implants have increasingly become the treatment of choice. This patient study illustrates the use of implants to rehabilitate a 20-year-old ED patient who initially presented with only 2 permanent and 6 primary teeth in the maxilla. Along with conventional endosseous implants, 2 specially designed zygomatic implants were utilized to avoid the need for bone grafting in the patient's severely resorbed maxilla. This expedited achievement of the fi…

Prospective clinical trial of dental implants in persons with ectodermal dysplasia.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS: Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary condition in which hypodontia is the second most frequently occurring sign. Hypodontia is associated with lack of development of the alveolar ridge and results in less volume of bone for support of conventional prostheses. Minimal development of the alveolar ridge can affect the bone volume available for the placement of dental implants. PURPOSE: This clinical trial evaluated the survival of implants placed in individuals with a form of ectodermal dysplasia and severe hypodontia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two hundred sixty-four titanium…

Complete dentures for a child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: a clinical report.

Young children with anodontia caused by hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia not only have difficulties in eating and speaking but can also sense that their appearance is different than others. Enabling children with HED to look and act more like their peers through the use of well-fitting and functioning dentures with age-appropriate denture teeth will greatly assist in their transitioning into the school years. Although denture fabrication requires multiple patient appointments and good cooperation, it is shown that even young children can cooperate for the denture-making process. The desire to…

Repair of saddle nose deformity in Wegener's granulomatosis and ectodermal dysplasia.

Two cases are reported involving surgical treatment of a saddle nose deformity due to Wegener's granulomatosis and ectodermal dysplasia, respectively. The association of ozena with both diseases requires special consideration for any type of transplants because of a high risk of infectious complications. By extranasal incisions the nasal dorsum has been successfully reconstructed by transplanting autogenic conchal cartilage. There has been no resorption or displacement of the transplant after twelve months in the case of ectodermal dysplasia, and after 25 months in the patient with Wegener's g…
