For UBM, an ultrasound linear sensor with a scanning frequency of 50 MHz was used (Aviso device, Quantel Medical, France). Various biometric UBM indicators were determined: lens thickness, diameter of the lens, lens-a …

Congenital, bilaterally symmetrical dislocation of the lens within the posterior chamber is referred to as lens ectopia. The behavior of the anterior hyaloid membrane in congenital lens ectopia has not been considered hitherto. The anterior hyaloid membrane in the aphakic area of the pupil is intact or ruptured and the ciliovitreal connex in the region of the lens dislocation may be normal or absent. If surgery is planned because of the dislocation, a knowledge of biomicroscopic details of the anterior hyaloid membrane might be useful.

Ocular and cutaneous stigmata are hallmarks of the heritable disorders of collagen and elastic tissue. Awareness of the oculocutaneous features is essential both to aid diagnosis and to direct management of affected patients. Although the angioid streaks of PXE, blue sclerae of OI, ocular fragility of EDS and ectopia lentis of Marfan syndrome are the best-known ocular signs of these disorders, other relevant ophthalmologic symptoms often accompany such classic findings.

Marfan syndrome is an inherited, connective-tissue disorder transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. Cardinal features of the disorder include tall stature, ectopia lentis, mitral valve prolapse, aortic root dilatation, and aortic dissection. Pectus excavatum may exist as an isolated lesion or in association with a genetic syndrome such as Marfan syndrome. We report the successful management of a simultaneous correction of pectus excavatum and the underlying cardiovascular diseases.

BACKGROUND: Cysteine β-synthase deficiency, often known as classic homocystinuria, is an uncommon inborn mistake in methionine metabolism. D … bophilia (16.7%), metabolic disorders (16.7%), and deep venous thrombosis (16.7%). All patients had ectopia lentis (100%), while one patient (16.7%) had eye ectropion, one patient (16.7%) had anterior uveitis, and one patient (16.7%) had scleromalacia. BACKGROUND: Bilateral secondary angle closure glaucoma is a presenting symptom of microspherophakia and ectopia lentis. Characterizing the associated syndrome and confirmation by genetic testing can identify associated systemic abnormalities and provide appropriate genetic counseling.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old woman with severe intellectual disability presented with light perception visual acuity and glaucoma, with intraocular pressure (IOP) in her right and left eyes of 69 and 70 mmHg, respectively. She underwent two sessions of 270-degree laser diode transscleral cytophotocoagulation…

RESULTS: We identified (likely) pathogenic FBN1 variants in 91% of patients. Ectopia lentis was more frequent in patients with dominant-negative (DN) variants (61%) than in those with haploinsufficient variants (27%). For DN FBN1 variants, the prevalence of ectopia lentis was highest in the N-terminal region (84%) and lowest in the C-termi …

Marfan syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic connective tissue disorder that results from mutations in the fibrillin-1 gene located on chromosome band 15q15-21. Fibrillin, a glycoprotein, is widely expressed throughout the body and contributes to the elasticity and force-bearing capacity of connective tissue. In the eye, fibrillin is a key constituent of the ciliary zonules, which suspend the crystalline lens in place. The zonular defect leads to ectopia lentis, which is a hallmark of Marfan ocular abnormalities and occurs in 60% to 80% of cases. Other less common ocular features of Marfan…

Ectopia lentis continues to be a therapeutic challenge for ophthalmologists. It can occur as an isolated condition, after ocular trauma, in association with other ocular disorders, as part of a systemic mesodermal disease or as a complication of general metabolic disorders. Minimal subluxation of the lens may cause no visual symptoms, but in more advanced cases serious optical disturbances arise. The most important is amblyopia. Surgical treatment options include iris manipulation, lens decision, aspiration, intracapsular or extracapsular extraction, and pars plana lensectomy. The choice of su…

BACKGROUND: Geleophysic dysplasia (GD) and Weill-Marchesani syndrome (WMS) are two rare genetic disorders that are classified as acromelic dysplasias and have many common features that overlap clinically and genetically in some patients. Both diseases are characterized by acromelic features, including short stature, brachydactyly, joint limitations, and cardiac involvement. WMS is distinguished from GD mainly by ocular abnormalities, including high myopia, microspherophakia, ectopia lentis, and glaucoma and the absence of the life-threatening airway stenosis and early lethality. These two synd…

PURPOSE: The long-term outcome and postoperative visual acuity in a single family with ectopia lentis secondary to Marfan syndrome is presented.
METHODS: Thirteen family members, ages ranging from 3 to 47 years, were evaluated from 2006 to 2008. Ten members were found to have primary or secondary visual problems secondary to ectopia lentis.
RESULTS: Evaluation of 10 members with subluxated lenses in three generations showed that the leading cause of loss of vision (< 20/200) was amblyopia (n = 5), followed by surgical complications (n = 2) and retinal detachment (n = 1). Moderate amblyopia w…

Megalocornea refers to an enlarged cornea that measures 13 mm or more in horizontal diameter in the absence of raised intraocular pressure. We describe a five-month-old boy with bilateral megalocornea with unilateral lens subluxation. No other ophthalmological abnormality was present. In all previously reported cases with megalocornea and ectopia lentis, the lens was cataractous and the dislocation was in the inferior and posterior direction. In contrast, our case had a clear lens which was displaced superonasally.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic disorder that affects the connective tissue in several systems, with ocular, cardiovascular, and skeletal system manifestations. Its ocular manifestations include ectopia lentis (EL), myopia, astigmatism, and corneal abnormalities. This review examines refractive alterations related to MFS such as EL, microspherophakia, lens coloboma, altered corneal biomechanics (flattening, thinning, and astigmatism), and myopia and their impact on visual acuity. The pathogenesis of these manifestations stems from mutations in the FBN1 gene (encoding fibrillin-1). Moreover,…

A lady who underwent lensectomy for microspherophakia and pars plana vitrectomy for retinal detachment in her left eye developed recurrent filtering blebs at the site of sclerotomies. Filtering blebs were managed by suturing the sclerotomies. Targeted gene sequencing identified a variant of ASPH gene (p.Arg688Gln) which is not known to be associated with Traboulsi syndrome. But considering the paucity of cases with genetic analysis, it would be possible that p.Arg688Gln is a pathogenic variant. This is the first case report of Traboulsi syndrome due to an ASPH variant not reported earlier that
