Fourier Transform Infrared Microspectroscopy Combined with Principal Component Analysis and Artificial Neural Networks for the Study of the Effect of β-Hydroxy-β-Methylbutyrate (HMB) Supplementation on Articular Cartilage.

The potential of Fourier Transform infrared microspectroscopy (FTIR microspectroscopy) and multivariate analyses were applied for the classification of the frequency ranges responsible for the distribution changes of the main components of articular cartilage (AC) that occur during dietary β-hydroxy-β-methyl butyrate (HMB) supplementation. The FTIR imaging analysis of histological AC sections originating from 35-day old male piglets showed the change in the collagen and proteoglycan contents of the HMB-supplemented group compared to the control. The relative amount of collagen content in the s

Handheld Co-Axial Bioprinting: Application to in situ surgical cartilage repair.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is driving major innovations in the area of cartilage tissue engineering. Extrusion-based 3D bioprinting necessitates a phase change from a liquid bioink to a semi-solid crosslinked network achieved by a photo-initiated free radical polymerization reaction that is known to be cytotoxic. Therefore, the choice of the photocuring conditions has to be carefully addressed to generate a structure stiff enough to withstand the forces phisiologically applied on articular cartilage, while ensuring adequate cell survival for functional chondral repair. We recently deve

Finite element prediction of transchondral stress and strain in the human hip.

Cartilage fissures, surface fibrillation, and delamination represent early signs of hip osteoarthritis (OA). This damage may be caused by elevated first principal (most tensile) strain and maximum shear stress. The objectives of this study were to use a population of validated finite element (FE) models of normal human hips to evaluate the required mesh for converged predictions of cartilage tensile strain and shear stress, to assess the sensitivity to cartilage constitutive assumptions, and to determine the patterns of transchondral stress and strain that occur during activities of daily livi

The nonlinear characteristics of soft gels and hydrated connective tissues in ultrafiltration.

A one-dimensional ultrafiltration problem of fluid flow through a soft permeable tissue or gel under high pressure and compressive strain is solved. A finite deformation biphasic theory is used to model the behavior of the soft porous permeable solid matrix. This theory includes a Helmholtz free energy function which depends on the three principal invariants (I, II, III) of the right Cauchy-Green tensor and which satisfies the Baker-Ericksen inequalities on the principal stresses and strains. The dependence of the porosity phi f and the solidity phi s on deformation is deduced and a generaliza

Development, validation, and biomechanical evaluation of a high-fidelity finite element model of the forearm musculoskeletal system.

BACKGROUND: The human forearm, a dynamically coordinated system of bones, muscles, and connective tissues, is central to upper limb function but poses significant challenges for computational modeling due to its anatomical complexity. Existing finite element (FE) models of the forearm often oversimplify soft tissues or lack rigorous validation, limiting their clinical utility. This study aimed to develop and validate a high-fidelity 3D FE model of the forearm musculoskeletal system to replicate in vivo stress distribution under axial loading. METHODS: The model was constructed using CT and MRI

CPR related injuries of the chest wall: direct and indirect fractures.

BACKGROUND: Rib and sternum fractures are common injuries associated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The fracture mechanism is either direct by application of force on sternum and anterior ribs or indirect by bending through compression of the thorax. The aim of this study was to determine morphologies of rib fractures after CPR and to reevaluate prior findings on fracture localisation, type and degree of dislocation. METHODS: The present study was based on all inpatients treated for chest wall fractures after non traumatic cardiac arrest at a Level 1 Trauma Centre from 2010 to 2016

Evaluation of cell and matrix mechanics using fluorescence excitation spectroscopy: Feasibility study in collagen gels containing fibroblasts.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Collagen gels containing cells are commonly used in tissue engineering, wound healing, and cancer research to investigate the interplay between cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM), as changes in the density and stiffness of the microenvironment are known to play a role in many diseases or pathological conditions. In these gels, the stiffness is regularly determined using destructive methods, such as indentation and tensile tests. Certain molecules native to cells and the ECM display fluorescence upon irradiation with ultraviolet light. The objective of the presen

The vocal organ of hummingbirds shows convergence with songbirds.

How sound is generated in the hummingbird syrinx is largely unknown despite their complex vocal behavior. To fill this gap, syrinx anatomy of four North American hummingbird species were investigated by histological dissection and contrast-enhanced microCT imaging, as well as measurement of vocalizations in a heliox atmosphere. The placement of the hummingbird syrinx is uniquely located in the neck rather than inside the thorax as in other birds, while the internal structure is bipartite with songbird-like anatomical features, including multiple pairs of intrinsic muscles, a robust tympanum an

Use of a gum elastic bougie in a penetrating neck trauma.

The case of a patient with a zone II penetrating neck injury who was intubated successfully utilizing the gum elastic bougie (GEB) is reported. He presented at a forward operational base in Afghanistan with a shrapnel wound in his neck as well as a cough and hoarseness. There were two wounds on each side of his laryngeal cartilages. The patient's breathing rate gradually increased and labored inhalation developed while the aeromedical evacuation was delayed for tactical reasons. Subcutaneous emphysema and edema concealed the anatomical landmarks, making a cricothyrotomy unsafe, and no fiber op

[The lung].

Lung transplantation is still the only curative treatment for end-stage pulmonary diseases. The results remain poor, however, because of the limited availability of lung donors, chronic rejection, and complications related to immunosuppressive therapy. The use of a bioartificial lung generated from autologous cells could offer a solution. We have demonstrated that in vivo epithelial and cartilage regeneration of the airways is feasible with the use of an aortic tissue matrix. Other studies show that in vitro and in vivo airway regeneration, respectively, can be obtained by using bio-engineerin

Heberden oration 1985. The rheology of joints.

The value of rheological studies of joint tissues has been illustrated by studies from our department. These have included studies of the stiffness of joints which suggest that subjective stiffness is more likely to be related to limitation of movement of a joint than to increased physical stiffness (either elastic or dissipative torques). A review of goniometry suggests that the diminution of joint movement with advancing age varies with the frequency of use of the joint. A simple goniometer for the hip has been described, and in contrast a sophisticated telemeterized system has been devised.

Pathways and pitfalls in partial laryngectomy.

Some 350 surgical specimens obtained at partial or total laryngectomy were photographed immediately after operation and processed for study by serial section. Intralaryngeal barriers to the spread of cancer are demonstrated on one hand and pathways of infiltration and destruction on the other. The following conclusions are based on these studies: two major elastic tissue barriers that influence the spread of vocal cord cancer are the dense mass of connective tissue at the anterior commissure which prevents invasion of the thyroid cartilage until very late, and the conus elasticus, under which

Biomechanics of fibrous proteins of the extracellular matrix studied by Brillouin scattering.

Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy is a technique that is able to detect thermally excited phonons within a material. The speed of propagation of these phonons can be determined from the magnitude of the Brillouin frequency shift between incident and scattered light, thereby providing a measure of the mechanical properties of the material in the gigahertz range. The mechanical properties of the extracellular matrices of biological tissues and their constituent biopolymers are important for normal tissue function and disturbances in these properties are widely implicated in disease.

Pure Zwitterionic Hydrogels with High Entanglement Reinforcement for Biomedical Applications.

Pure zwitterionic hydrogels have attracted great interest in the biomedical field but are not widely used due to their weak mechanical properties. It has proven challenging to achieve an optimal balance between the antifouling ability and the mechanical properties of existing zwitterionic hydrogel enhancement methods. Consequently, pure zwitterionic hydrogel materials that exhibit high strength and resistance to fatigue were developed in this study. A prepolymerized poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) solution with an average number of 56 chain entanglements was first prepared, and then, c

HYALURONIC ACID IN ORTHOPEDICS.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) as a compound was discovered in 1934 by Karl Meyer and John Palmer as one of the glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in the vitreous body of the bovine eye. HA occurs naturally in many organs, tissues and body fluids, and especially is presented in large quantities in articular cartilage and synovial fluid. It is a non-protein, non-sulfate glycosaminoglycan which has an important role in the physiological biomechanics of synovial fluid, there is responsible for lubrication and drug-elasticity. In the musculoskeletal system, hyaluronic acid is produced by synoviocytes, fibroblasts and

The fine structure of the turbot eye (Scophtalmus maximus): A macro-anatomical, light and scanning electron microscopical study.

In fish species, the morphological structure of the eye varies depending on environmental conditions. Morphometric data about the sensory organs of fish is lacking. Therefore, this study aims to describe the morphological structure of the turbot eye using gross, light and scanning electron microscope examinations. The turbot eyeball was found to comprise three layers: the tunica fibrosa bulbi (cornea, sclera), the tunica vasculosa bulbi (choroidea, iris) and the tunica nervea bulbi (retina). The thickness of the centre of the cornea measured approximately 153.14 μm, and the peripheral thicknes
