BACKGROUND: Cardiac dysrhythmias after electrical injury have been reported previously, however, atrial fibrillation after low-voltage electrical injury is extremely rare. We present a case of atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response resulting from a low-voltage electrical injury.
CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old active duty Navy sailor presented to the emergency department after an electrical shock from a 440-V furnace. He experienced severe pain in both hands and a racing sensation in his chest. He denied other symptoms. An electrocardiogram was performed demonstrating atrial fibrillat

During childbirth, a combinatorial injury occurs and can result in stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Simulated childbirth injury, consisting of vaginal distension (VD) and pudendal nerve crush (PNC), results in slowed recovery of continence, as well as decreased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a regenerative cytokine. Electrical stimulation has been shown to upregulate BDNF in motor neurons and facilitate axon regrowth through the increase of β(II)-tubulin expression after injury. In this study, female rats underwent selective pudendal nerve motor branch (PNMB) stimula

AIMS: Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) exhibit neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) causing high intravesicle pressures and incontinence. The first aim was to measure changes in maximum cystometric capacity (MCC) evoked by electrical stimulation of the dorsal genital nerve (DGN) delivered either continuously or conditionally (only during bladder contractions) in persons with SCI. The second aim was to use the external anal sphincter electromyogram (EMG(EAS)) for real-time control of conditional stimulation.
METHODS: Serial filling cystometries were performed in nine volunteers with

The authors present a case where a cross-leg fillet flap from an amputated limb allowed reconstruction of the contralateral disrupted Achilles tendon and provided neurotized soft tissue. Achilles tendon reconstruction of the left leg was achieved by utilizing vascularized extensor tendons from the dorsum of the right foot based on the dorsalis pedis circulation. Neurotization was accomplished end to side between a cutaneous nerve from the dorsum of the foot and the recipient sural nerve. Healing was complete and without complication. Cross-leg flaps including tendon and nerve may be used to re

This report describes a case of transient paresis of the right diaphragm following the transcatheter radiofrequency ablation for the electrical disconnection of pulmonary veins, which recovered completely during the observational period in a 61-year-old woman with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. For electrical disconnection of pulmonary veins, careful preventive measures for phrenic nerve damage are required.

Electrical injury is an area of burn medicine that requires specialized treatment. Injury rates have reached 6.56% in 1990, compared to only 1% prior to 1980. In recent years, the morbidity has steadily increased due to the rapid development of the electrical power industry and the popularization of electrical installations. Electrical accidents cause severe damage to muscle and tissue, which makes treatment of these accident patients quite challenging. Therefore, it is very important to promote the widespread use of a first aid network within the electrical power system while strengthening sa

Spinal cord injury at the C5 and C6 level results in loss of hand function. Electrical stimulation of paralyzed muscles is one approach that has demonstrated significant capacity for restoring grasp and release function. One potential limitation of this approach is that key muscles for stimulation may have lower motor neuron damage, rendering the muscles unexcitable. We have used surgical modification of the biomechanics of the hand to overcome this limitation. Tendon transfer of paralyzed but lower motor neuron intact muscles can compensate for potential function lost owing to muscles with lo

Bilateral legs damaged by high-voltage electrical injury were treated by amputation and a free thin rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap with reduced muscle. Damaged arteries at 2 months after injury showed disappearance of endothelium, and a decreased number and morphological changes in smooth-muscle cells. Injured nerves and muscles showed early regenerating processes after total degeneration, and no progressive muscular necrosis. These results suggest that severe degeneration of the neurovascular bundle and muscle is unavoidable in high-voltage electrical injuries of the extremities. Therefor
