Electrical stimulation of salivary flow in patients with Sjögren's syndrome.

Patients with the salivary component of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) develop chronic xerostomia, which causes oral symptoms and functional impairment in approximate proportion to its severity. The purpose of this double-blind study was to determine whether an electrical stimulus applied to the tongue and hard palate by a battery-operated device (SAL II, Biosonics, Inc.) could stimulate salivary flow in subjects with generally severe SS. Twenty-nine patients with the salivary component of SS (diagnosed as the presence of focal chronic sialadenitis in a labial salivary gland biopsy specimen with a fo

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation after major amputation.

We studied the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on stump healing and postoperative and late phantom pain after major amputations of the lower limb. A total of 51 patients were randomised to one of three postoperative treatment regimens: sham TENS and chlorpromazine medication, sham TENS only, and active low frequency TENS. There were fewer re-amputations and more rapid stump healing among below-knee amputees who had received active TENS. Sham TENS had a considerable placebo effect on pain. There were, however, no significant differences in the analgesic requirements

Therapeutic electrical stimulation of the lower limb by epimysial electrodes.

The problem of inadequate hip stability prevents many patients with head trauma, stroke, or spinal injury from balancing on one limb in order to take a step. There is no adequate orthotic substitute for hip instability, and electrical stimulation with surface electrodes cannot effectively activate the deep hip muscles. This report describes a clinical program in which electrical stimulation via surgically placed electrodes is combined with routine tendon lengthening and transfers and physical therapy. The electrodes are fixed to the epimysium and the leads directed subcutaneously to exit the s

Electrical stimulation of the conus medullaris for bladder emptying in a paraplegic.

Nashold et al. (1972) have developed a surgically implantable system for activating the micturition reflex in the paraplegic by electrical stimulation of the spinal cord at the conus level. This communication describes the long-term course in a paraplegic patient who has used conus stimulation to achieve bladder emptying for 7 years. A 42-year-old man sustained a complete transverse lesion at the C6 level. Ten months after the accident he developed some spasticity in his legs but his urinary bladder remained completely flaccid. A device for electrical stimulation of the conus was implanted. Th

Functional walking in paralyzed patients by means of electrical stimulation.

Three partially paralyzed patients were unable to walk even after maximal rehabilitation attempts at a major rehabilitation center. One 36-year-old man had transverse myelitis, a 57-year-old man had had a stroke, and the third patient, a 35-year-old man, had incurred a traumatic brain injury. The three patients were unable to flex the hips, had adductor spasm and weak hip and knee extension, and lacked ankle dorsiflexion. Intramuscular stainless steel wire electrodes activated by timers were placed in the quadriceps, hip flexors, extensors, and abductors, as needed. Muscle force and foot conta

Functional electrical stimulation in control of motor output and movements.

In patient with damaged upper motor neurones we show the therapeutic effect of electrical stimulation (called FES) of peripheral mixed nerves on the restoration of motor activity and movements. The results of neurophysiological, kinesiological and clinical observations are presented. We discuss the possible mechanisms, especially the spinal ones, which are fundamental for such a rhythmic activity as gait. We discuss them also from the point of view of activation of proprioceptive feedback mechanisms and of achieved sensory reinforcement influencing the spinal reflex mechanisms as well as the p

Intravaginal electrical stimulation. Clinical experiments of urethral closure.

The effect on the urethra of intravaginal electrical stimulation (IVS) was registered by means of urethral pressure profiles (UPP). With the object of finding the most appropriate electrical parameters and optimal electrode positions within the vagina, 24 patients with stress incontinence, 22 with urgency and 4 continent women were studied. Electrical stimulation was given via an obturator with seven electrodes, which could be connected in different combinations of pairs. In all the women, stimulation with the electrodes in specific positions effected a more marked rise in the UPPs than with t

A coupling model of transcranial magnetic stimulation induced electric fields to neural state variables.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique used to modulate neural activity, with applications in clinical treatment, diagnostics, and neuroscientific research. TMS targeting the human primary motor cortex (M1) is well studied, aided by experimental readouts from the cerebral cortex, the spinal cord, and activated muscle targets. One key readout is a series of pulses that descend the spinal cord following TMS, called DI-waves. These reflect the output of M1 to the spinal cord and are influenced by TMS parameters such as orientation, strength, and wave

Effects of transcranial electric stimulation on attentional functions in healthy adults: A meta-analysis.

Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, such as transcranial electric stimulation (tES), are increasingly promoted as methods to enhance attention. However, their efficacy and optimal stimulation targets remain uncertain. We conducted a preregistered meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials in healthy adults (58 trials, 295 outcomes) examining the effects of tES on attentional functions (PROSPERO: CRD42023487035), complemented by a performance-electric field correlation (PEC) analysis to identify brain regions most strongly linked to tES-induced behavioral improvements. In general, tES…

Transcranial direct current stimulation in patients with depression: An electric field modeling meta-analysis.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has shown potential in modulating cortical activity and treating depression. Despite its promise, variability in electrode montage configurations and electric field strength across studies has resulted in inconsistent outcomes. Traditional meta-analytic methods assessing the effect of tDCS in depression typically do not compare tDCS montage and the anatomical distribution of electric field, which is a major source of inter-experimental variability. We hypothesize that considering these parameters and anatomical variability in a meta-analysis might

Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation for Analgesia During Outpatient Endometrial Biopsy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) decreases pain at the time of outpatient endometrial biopsy. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind trial of active TENS compared with placebo TENS at the time of endometrial biopsy. The primary outcome was pain measured on a 0- to 100-mm visual analog scale immediately after biopsy, with secondary outcomes including satisfaction and tolerability of TENS and pain scores at other procedural time points. To detect a 15-mm reduction in pain with a 30-mm SD, 80.0% power, and a significance level of 0.05, 64

Precise Cell Type Electrical Stimulation Therapy Via Force-electric Hydrogel Microspheres for Cartilage Healing.

Electrical stimulation enhances cellular activity, promoting tissue regeneration and repair. However, specific cells and maintaining a stable energy supply are challenges for precise cell electrical stimulation therapy. Here, force-electric conversion hydrogel microspheres (Piezo@CR MPs) is devloped to induce specific stem cell aggregation and promote chondrogenic differentiation through localized electrical stimulation. These MPs contain barium titanate (BT) nanoparticles embedded in hyaluronic acid methacrylate hydrogel MPs, with a polydopamine (pDA) coating bound to stem cell recruitment pe
