Not so Shocking: Electromyography in Pediatrics Remains Feasible and Diagnostically Useful.

BACKGROUND: Electrodiagnostic testing, including nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG), assists with localizing lesions within the peripheral nervous system. NCS/EMG in children can be technically challenging and its relevance has been questioned in the era of affordable genetic testing. NCS/EMG provides information that may not be available in the examination of a young or developmentally delayed child. Our goal was to review the volume and referral sources of NCS/EMG studies and evaluate its feasibility and diagnostic yield at a pediatric tertiary care hospital. METHODS:…

Alterations in Surface Electromyography Are Associated with Subjective Masticatory Muscle Pain.

BACKGROUND: Tenderness of masseters and temporalis can be considered a relevant tool for diagnosis of myo-type craniofacial pain disorders, but a limit of pain score systems is that they are based on subjective pain perception. Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a noninvasive and reliable tool for recording muscle activity. Therefore, we investigated whether a correlation exists between tenderness on masseters and temporalis, assessed by subjective pain scale, and muscles activity, evaluated by sEMG, in patients with painful temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and concurrent tension-type headache…

[The role of laryngeal electromyography in the diagnosis of vocal cord movement disorders].

The development of the therapeutic possibilities of vocal cord immobility necessitated the parallel renewal of diagnostic methods. In the last years, laryngeal electromyography, which was first introduced more than 70 years ago, has been re-discovered. After reviewing the international literature and their own experience, the authors present the indications, technical requirements, method and, particularly, the evaluation of the results of this procedure. Laryngeal electromyography makes the differentiation between mechanical fixation and immobility with neurological origin of the vocal folds …

The Effect of Split Nerve on Electromyography Signal Pattern in a Rat Model.

BACKGROUND: Recent developments of prosthetic arm are based on the use of electromyography (EMG) signals. To provide improvements, such as coordinated movement of multiple joints and greater control intuitiveness, higher variability of EMG signals is needed. By splitting a nerve lengthwise, connecting each half to new target muscles, and employing a program to assign each biosignal pattern to a specific movement, we hope to enrich the number of biosignal sites on amputees' stump. METHODS: We split the gastrocnemius muscle of 12 Sprague-Dawley rats into two muscle heads, searched for the peron…

Assessment of parturition with cervical light-induced fluorescence and uterine electromyography.

Parturition involves increasing compliance (ripening) of the uterine cervix and activation of the myometrium. These processes take place in … that noninvasive measurements of light-induced fluorescence (LIF) of cervical collagen and uterine electromyography (EMG) objectively detect changes in the composition of the cervix and myometrial preparedness to labor and are more reliable than clinical observations alone. We present a conceptual model of parturition constructed on cervical LIF and uterine EMG s …

Evaluation of the complexity of motor unit potentials in anal sphincter electromyography.

OBJECTIVE: Motor unit potential (MUP) morphology can be quantified using parameters describing electrophysiological size and shape (complexity). Traditionally, MUP complexity has been estimated using parameters number of phases and turns. Recently, 'irregularity coefficient' (IR), measuring the length of the MUP curve normalized with its amplitude, has been introduced. The aim of this study was to evaluate IR in the external anal sphincter muscle. METHODS: Sensitivity was examined in 61 patients with chronic cauda equina lesions, and specificity in 75 controls using a standard concentric EMG

[Comprehensive prognostic value of spontaneous and evoked electromyography in laryngeal paralysis].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the comprehensive prognostic value of spontaneous and evoked electromyography (EMG) in laryngeal paralysis. METHODS: The characteristics of laryngeal EMG of 91 cases with unilateral vocal cord paralysis (VCP) after thyroid surgery were assessed. All cases were divided into four groups according to the interval of laryngeal EMG after onset, which were group one (2 months shorter, n = 13), group two (2 to 4 months, n = 23), group three (4 to 6 months, n = 36), group four (6 months longer, n = 19). The waveform morphology and the amplitude of laryngeal EMG and the highest…

Iatrogenic complications and risks of nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography.

Electrodiagnostic procedures are routinely performed in patients with a variety of neuromuscular disorders. These studies are generally well tolerated and rarely thought to be associated with any significant side effects. However, needle electromyography is an invasive procedure and under certain situations has the potential to be associated with iatrogenic complications, including bleeding, infection, nerve injury, pneumothorax, and other local trauma. Similar complications are possible if needles are used for either stimulating or recording. In addition, like all other electrical devices and…

[Needle electromyography in the thoracic paraspinal muscles of motor neuron disease].

Usefulness of needle electromyography (EMG) in the thoracic paraspinal muscles was investigated in 22 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). All patients revealed denervation changes in the thoracic paraspinal muscles, though the EMG findings were insufficient to fulfill the WFN criteria of lower motor neuron sign. We could not diagnose three patients as having ALS at their first visits by conventional EMG. One patient had restricted neurogenic change within one limb and two patients had cervical spondylosis causing difficulty to diagnose anterior horn cell involvement at the cervi…

Electromyography of the pelvic diaphragm and anal sphincter in dogs with perineal hernia.

The innervation of the levator ani and coccygeal muscles and the external anal sphincter was studied by anatomic dissection in 6 clinically … al part of this muscle, because the caudal part was absent in all 40 dogs. From combined results of electromyography and histologic examination, it was concluded that atrophy of the muscles of the pelvic diaphragm, which develops in some dogs with perineal hernia, is likely to be of neurogenic origin. Nerve damage is localized in the sacral plexus proximal to the …
