Solitary benign thyroid nodule in an elderly female cadaver.

A thyroid nodule (TN) is a structurally discrete lesion within the thyroid gland that can be readily distinguished from the adjoining normal thyroid parenchyma. TNs are more frequently detected these days because of the widespread use of high-resolution imaging techniques for various neck pathologies. A well-circumscribed macroscopic lesion measuring 17 mm ×14 mm ×12 mm was observed in the left lobe of the thyroid gland during routine dissection performed on an embalmed elderly female cadaver for undergraduate teaching. It was firm to the touch and greyish brown in color. In the histological e

Fibrous and muscular components of the tarsal tunnel roof; a quantitative 3D anatomical study using dissection and a digital microscribe.

PURPOSE: There is no gold standard technique to diagnose and treat tarsal tunnel syndromes. This is due to the lack of consensus on the structures that form the roof of the tarsal tunnel. The flexor retinaculum is consistently stated to form the roof, but there is no clear understanding of the anatomy (borders, spatial relations) of this fibrous tissue. This makes the surgical release inconsistent, and potentially incomplete, when treating tarsal tunnel syndrome. METHODS: The aim of this study was to accurately describe the roof of the tarsal tunnel. Feet of embalmed Body Donors (n = 15; mean

Topographical Anatomy of the Superficial Peroneal Nerve: A Cadaveric Study on Anatomical Patterns and Clinical Implications.

The notable anatomical variability of the superficial fibular nerve (SFN) affects clinical and surgical procedures that involve it. The aim of this study was to analyze the course and branching patterns of the SFNs relative to bony landmarks to provide foundational data for surgical precision and thereby minimize iatrogenic injuries. Thirty-four embalmed Korean cadavers were dissected. The points at which the SFN (1) pierced through the crural fascia and (2) bifurcated into the medial and intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerves were measured from the lateral malleolus and fibula. The SFN piercing

Biomechanical evaluation of sanders type IIB calcaneal fractures: A cadaveric analysis of fixation strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Calcaneal fractures present significant treatment challenges due to their complex anatomy and load-bearing function. Increasingly, minimally invasive techniques are used in treatment. This study evaluates the biomechanical performance of 3 different fixation methods using embalmed cadaver calcanei subjected to a controlled linear increase in load. METHODS: 18 cadaveric calcanei were dissected and a simulated Sanders IIB joint depression calcaneal fracture was created with a saw. The fixation techniques used were: plate and 6.5 mm longitudinal screws, plate alone, and screws alon

Anatomy of the vesicovaginal fascia and its relation to branches of the inferior hypogastric plexus.

The inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP) lies in the extraperitoneal pelvis, and supplies branches to pelvic and perineal viscera. In men, the rectoprostatic fascia (Denonvillier's fascia) forms a distinct double fascial layer between the seminal glands and the rectum. The hypogastric nerve projections to the prostate and seminal glands run anterior to this. An analagous fascial layer in women between the vagina and cervix posteriorly and the urinary bladder anteriorly has recently been described. The purpose of this study was to examine the anatomy of the vesicovaginal fascia (VVF) and to determ

The extradural extended eyebrow approach: A cadaveric feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Extradural anterior clinoidectomy (eAC) is key to expose the paraclinoid region. Several authors have pointed limitations of performing an eAC through a supraorbital craniotomy. In this article, we aim to provide educational material and discuss the technical nuances to successfully perform an eAC throughout a modification of the supraorbital approach, the extradural extended eyebrow approach (xEBA+eAC). METHODS: Four embalmed heads were used for anatomic dissection and perform the xEBA+eAC. Additionally, one head was used for a video demonstration of the surgical approach. RES

Macro/microscopic distribution of the dorsal nerve of penis in human glans penis.

This study aimed to elucidate the macroscopic and microscopic distributions of the dorsal nerve of penis (DNP) that provides the greatest sensitivity over the glans penis. The glandes of 23 penises of formalin-embalmed cadavers were investigated to confirm the macroscopic and microscopic distributions of the DNP within the glans penis by whole-mount Sihler's staining and histological sectioning. Superficial regions of the mid-glans were reconstructed in three dimensions to define the microstructure of terminal branches of the DNP that project towards the skin surface. A mean of 6.7 bundles of

Classification of the variations of the palmar recurrent branch of the median nerve with special emphasis on angulation.

OBJECTIVE: Iatrogenic nerve injuries are devastating to both the patient and the surgeon. This study focuses on the anatomical relationship of the palmar recurrent branch with the parent median nerve in an attempt to identify higher risk types. METHODS: The palmar recurrent branch was dissected in 75 embalmed cadavers. The median nerve was divided into 4 sections from lateral to medial, defined as zones 1-4. The angle to the axial plane of the median nerve was also measured and classified as 0°, 45°, 60°, and 90°. RESULTS: Accessory recurrent branches were found in 36.2% of cases. The recurr

Anatomical consideration of the occipital cutaneous nerves and artery for the safe treatment of occipital neuralgia.

There is no standardized approach to the greater occipital nerve (GON) block technique for treating occipital neuralgia. The aim of the present study was to validate the previously-suggested guidelines for conventional injection techniques and to provide navigational guidelines for safe GON block. The GON, lesser occipital nerve (LON) and occipital artery (OA) were carefully dissected in the occipital region of embalmed cadavers. Using a 3 D digitizer, the GON, LON, and OA were observed on the two reference lines. The distances between the landmarks were recorded and statistically analyzed. On

Distribution of the internal nasal branch of the infraorbital nerve to the nasal septum: Application to rhinoplasty.

BACKGROUND: The course of the nerves along the nasal septum has not been clearly studied, and surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty require a more detailed topography of the nerve supply inside the septum. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the distribution of the internal nasal branch of the infraorbital nerve inside the nasal septum and to define the relationship between it and the nasal cartilages. METHODS: Fourteen sides from eight fresh frozen and embalmed Caucasian cadaveric heads were dissected. The specimens were derived from three males and five females. The ages of the cadavers at

Transepicondylar distal femoral pin placement in computer assisted surgical navigation.

UNLABELLED: The use of optical tracking systems in computer assisted surgical navigation requires the rigid fixation of a dynamic reference base to the target bone to be navigated. This report presents the results of a new approach to optical tracker fixation in the distal femur. Four embalmed cadavers were evaluated for pin placement. It was found that placement of pins from medial to lateral parallel to the transepicondylar axis placed the pins well posterior to the center of the intramedullary canal and away from neurovascular structures. Eighty-six consecutive patients underwent total knee
