Carcinoid tumor in a Meckel's diverticulum: hypothesis on mutual embryological origin.

Congenital defects presenting at an adult age are subject to diagnostic errors because of their relative rarity and often odd clinical presentation. We illustrate a 63-year-old male patient with multiple ileal carcinoid tumors along with a carcinoid tumor in Meckel's diverticulum. The Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital abnormality arising from a patent vitelline duct and is found at the anti-mesenteric side of the ileum. In the Meckel's diverticulum, ectopic tissue or neoplasms are sometimes found, which may lead to intussusception, hemorrhage, or inflammation. The carcinoid tumor is a neur

Magnetic resonance imaging in children with anorectal malformations: embryologic implications.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the spectrum of developmental anomalies in the caudal region of patients with anorectal malformations (ARM) and relate them to the new insights in the embryogenesis of this region. METHODS: Forty-nine patients with ARM were investigated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); 24 preoperatively (preop) and 25 postoperatively (postop). Of this group, 17 patients had a high (or intermediate) ARM, 28 a low ARM, and 4 a cloacal malformation (CM). The evaluation of the imaging studies included the level and type of ARM (preop); the developmental state o

Segmental spinal dysgenesis: neuroradiologic findings with clinical and embryologic correlation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Segmental spinal dysgenesis (SSD) is a rare congenital abnormality in which a segment of the spine and spinal cord fails to develop properly. Our goal was to investigate the neuroradiologic features of this condition in order to correlate our findings with the degree of residual spinal cord function, and to provide insight into the embryologic origin of this disorder. We also aimed to clarify the relationship between SSD and other entities, such as multiple vertebral segmentation defects, congenital vertebral displacement, and caudal regression syndrome (CRS). METHODS:

[Embryological study of the mechanism of antenatal lower urinary tract obstruction].

Closure of the embryonic bladder based on the results of the study of 25 human embryos (Crown-Rump length: 5mm-60mm) and 8 Born's reconstructions, is presented. It is a complex but well regulated stage of organogenesis. Division of the cloaca depends on caudal regression, development of the genital tubercle and growth of the urorectal fold which joins the cloacal membrane. The didermal cloacal membrane (composed of the ecto and endodermal layers) opens on its caudal part. On the cranial part, there is a cloacal plug, composed of packed cells, which strengthens the inferior part of the genital

Carcinoma of the anterior commissure of the larynx: I. Embryological and anatomic considerations.

In this study we attempt to define the organization of the anterior region of the adult larynx, on the basis of its development. For this purpose, we have studied the development of the anterior commissure region on serial sections of human larynges from embryos, fetuses, and adults. Our findings indicate that all the structures of this region derive from a single median mesenchymal band, first evident at 7 to 8 weeks of gestation, between the lateral laminae of the thyroid cartilage. This band of mesenchyme gives rise to all the structures along the midline of the thyroid cartilage and immedi

[Atopic gallbladder. Case report, embryologic etiology and review of the literature].

Abnormal position of the gallbladder seems to be rare, but knowledge about the varieties helps to avoid intraoperative complications regarding the spreading procedure of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In the reported case the gallbladder was found in the lower right abdomen fixed by adhesions to the jejunum. Embryological aspects are discussed and a literature review is given.

Duplicate bladder exstrophy: a new variant of clinical and embryological significance.

A case of duplicate exstrophy of a nature not previously encountered is reported, which we believe has important clinical and embryological implications. The patient presented with what appeared to be classical exstrophy. The inability to identify the ureteral orifices at operation led to the discovery of a previously unrecognized subjacent bladder of normal size and configuration except for a patulous bladder neck and associated epispadias. On excision of the duplicate bladder plate a coloniform projection was discovered that was lined with colonic mucosa. The surgical and potential embryolog

[Pathological and embryological studies on abortion cases related to the Seveso accident].

After the explosion accident on July 10, 1976 in Seveso (Italy), material from 30 interrupted pregnancies and from 4 spontaneous abortions was investigated by embryological and histomorphological studies. No indications of mutagenic, teratogenic or fetotoxic effects of TCDD could be found. The cases of spontaneous abortion, albeit more suspect for dioxin damage, showed different morphological alterations obviously due to a variety of causative factors independent of TCDD. On the other hand it is not possible to exclude entirely an embryotoxic effect of TCDD because in the majority of cases the

[Ureter malformations and renal dysplasia--an embryological concept (author's transl)].

A study was made of 32 cases of single ectopic ureters (without duplication) to assess the abnormalities observed in the corresponding renal parenchyma and to correlate renal status with location of the ectopic uretic opening. Specimens were obtained from 26 nephrectomies and renal dysplasia was found in 22 cases. There was a close relationship between renal anomalies and location of the ureteric opening. The more remote the ectopic orifice from its normal position, the more severe were the associated renal lesions. Dysplasia was always present when the ectopic ureter opened outside the urinar

[Embryological duplications of the node-bundle of His : its pathological rôle].

A histological study by the method of seriated sections in one case of "double-outlet left ventricle" made it possible to confirm and to describe the embryology of the nodal-His junction: not only the atrio-ventricular node (AV N) but also the His bundle (H) have a double origin, atrial and ventricular. Fusion of these two buds, inexistant in the "lone ventricle" is certainly imperfect. Two macroscopically normal hearts provided examples of nodal buds in one case, of a persisting cleft between the two His buds in the other.

Pulmonary Developmental Disorders in Adults: An Integrative Review of Embryology, Pathogenesis, Imaging, and Management.

Pulmonary developmental disorders comprise a heterogeneous group of congenital abnormalities involving the airways, lung parenchyma, pulmonary vasculature, or overlapping developmental pathways. Although these conditions commonly present during infancy or childhood, many remain clinically silent until adulthood, when they are discovered incidentally or manifest with recurrent respiratory symptoms such as infection, hemoptysis, or progressive dyspnea. These abnormalities may be broadly categorized into airway, vascular, parenchymal, and mixed developmental anomalies. Airway abnormalities includ

Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision Considering the Embryology Along the Fascia in Rectal Cancer Patients.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) remains a challenging technique for rectal dissection. This study aimed to evalu … r local recurrence rate was similar between the two groups (both 5.9%). CONCLUSION: TaTME based on embryology along the fascia is feasible and seems a safe alternative to LaTME in selected patients with rectal cancer when considering the conversion rate and the operative time.

Thoracic Vascular Variants and Anomalies: Imaging Findings, Review of the Embryology, and Clinical Features.

Thoracic vascular malformations are a set of complex congenital abnormalities that result in major alterations of the patient's anatomy. It can be discovered incidentally or the anomalies may generate heart failure with a right-to-left shunt, dysphagia, dyspnea, stridor, cough, recurrent bronchopulmonary infections, hypoxemia, paradoxical emboli, and occasionally apneas and massive hemothorax. The knowledge of the embryology, and the normal development of the vascular structures of the thorax, allows to understand these abnormalities-and thus helps in making an accurate diagnosis-with its poss…
