Paragangliomas are highly vascular neuroendocrine tumors that arise from embryonic neural crest cells. They may either be hormonally active (sympathetic) or silent (parasympathetic). Approximately one-third are hereditary, and patients may develop multiple paragangliomas. Presurgical planning involves medical management as well as interventional and/or surgical techniques that must address vascular supply. Contrast-enhanced CT is the best initial anatomical study and shows the hypervascularity and feeding vessels. 3D cinematic rendering using multiplanar light sources can highlight spatial rel

Organ formation during embryogenesis is a complex process that involves various local cell-cell interactions at the molecular and mechanical levels. Despite this complexity, organogenesis can be modelled in vitro. In this article, we focus on two recent examples in which embryonic stem cells can self-organise into three-dimensional structures - the optic cup and the pituitary epithelium; and one case of self-organising adult stem cells - the gut epithelium. We summarise how these approaches have revealed intrinsic programs that drive locally autonomous modes of organogenesis and homeostasis. W

We reviewed MRI and SPECT images in 10 patients with septo-optic dysplasia (SOD). MRI was performed in all of them. Six of them had bilateral optic nerve atrophy and abnormality of midline brain structures (e. g., septum pellucidum, corpus callosum). Four cases had one-sided optic nerve atrophy. They have ipsilateral or bilateral cortical dysplasia. It may suggest that one of the pathogenesis of SOD is a disruption of the anterior cerebral artery at embryonic site. SPECT was performed in 3 patients with cortical dysplasia. At cortical dysplasia area, CBF-SPECT and IMZ-SPECT showed the same RI

INTRODUCTION: Twin reversed arterial perfusion (TRAP) is a rare condition in monozygotic multiple gestations, caused by the formation of large arterio-arterial anastomoses. Only few serial ultrasound observations are reported, showing the delayed development in the recipient twin.
CASE: A monochorionic monoamniotic twin pregnancy with discordant growth was diagnosed at 11 weeks and 4 days in a 28-year-old primigravida. The smaller twin, who first appeared as an amorphic mass, showed growth and developed a clearly recognizable spine and lower limbs in further ultrasound examinations.

Proliferation, cell death and differentiation occur simultaneously in developing retina and are precisely orchestrated. We have studied the effects of biotin (vitamin H) on early retinal development. In vivo administration of biotin to early embryonic chick eyes at moderately elevated levels induced malformations, affecting retina and lens structures. The effects were strictly age dependent and were only found in embryos treated between Hamburger and Hamilton stage 14-17. Biocytin, a biotin analogue, mimicked biotin effects, while avidin could block the effects. At the cellular level, biotin d

Even postnatally, the female peritoneum (mesothelium and submesothelial mesenchyme) has a potential for differentiation (secondary Müllerian system) similar to that of the embryonic coelom epithelium. This potential is manifested in some cases under an evident hormonal stimulus, and in other cases without an apparent cause. The functional similarity of the differentiation products of the secondary Müllerian system with structures of the primary Müllerian system is underscored by their common antigens which have been detected immunohistologically, including the expression of steroid receptors.

The present study describes morphological changes produced in the ovary of newly hatched chickens by treatment with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Morphometric measurements of the volume of steroidogenic cells and structures of the ovarian medulla were performed in controls and experimental chickens treated with hCG (1.0 IU/embryo) at 13, 15, and 17 days of embryonic development. After hCG treatment, the volume of interstitial cell cords increased, and modifications in poorly differentiated cells neighbouring the interstitial cells were also observed. Other changes obtained after hCG trea

This article documents the presence of multifocal, bilateral glial heterotopia in the lungs manifesting as symptomatic lung masses during the newborn period. Prior to the present report, this rare form of heterotopia was known to occur exclusively in anencephalic infants. The observed bilateral pulmonary disease had an important cystic component, clinically and radiologically similar to cystic adenomatoid malformation. Theoretically, several explanations may be elaborated to account for the presence of central nervous tissue in the lungs: embolic events; protrusion of embryonic brain structure

The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an important role in the evolution of early metazoans, as it provides structural and biochemical support to the surrounding cells through the cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. In multi-cellular organisms, ECM plays a pivotal role in the differentiation of tissues and in the development of organs. Fibulins are ECM glycoproteins, found in a variety of tissues associated with basement membranes, elastic fibers, proteoglycan aggregates, and fibronectin microfibrils. The expression profile of fibulins reveals their role in various developmental processes s

Two percent to four percent of all newborns have a major structural malformation of which only a small percentage can be explained by either aneuploidy or a single-gene disorder. No other mammal has a similar reproductive problem. It is the suggestion that previously unrecognized viral infection accounts for a large percentage of these abnormalities by interfering with appropriate embryonic cell migration, reducing hyperplasia, or damaging the precursor structure by means of an inflammatory mechanism.

AimOver the past few decades, the prevalence of visual impairments has increased substantially, and some are incurable. This study aimed to present a co-culture method that promotes the differentiation of retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) in the presence of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells.MethodsWe implemented a three-dimensional culture system using a modified alginate substrate to culture human embryonic stem cell-derived RPCs on top of an RPE layer, mimicking an in vivo environment. The characteristics of RPCs in experimental and control groups were analyzed at the RNA and protein leve

Mechanical forces play a critical role in shaping tissue architecture and influencing cell behavior during development and disease. Plasma membrane tension acts as a key mechanosensitive parameter, linking external forces to intracellular signaling through mechanotransduction. While traditional methods for measuring membrane tension, such as atomic force microscopy and optical tweezers, are invasive and challenging to apply to whole tissues, the mechanosensitive dye Flipper-TR offers a nondestructive optical approach to measure membrane tension using Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (F

ADAMs (a disintegrin and metalloprotease) are membrane-bound enzymes, capable of shedding a multitude of proteins from the surface of the cell. They are therefore considered crucial modulators of physiological and pathophysiological processes. The structure and function of ADAMs is related to those of a family of snake venom metalloproteases which also possess a potential adhesion domain as well as a potential protease domain. Mammalian ADAMs are involved in various biological and disease-related processes, such as cell-cell fusion, adhesion and intracellular signalling. Functional involvement

Human leukocyte antigen G (HLA-G) molecules are crucial for the maternal tolerance against the fetus during pregnancy. Thus, the presence of soluble HLA-G (sHLA-G) in embryo cultures is thought to be correlated to a successful pregnancy after assisted reproductive techniques (ART). Here, we established a rapid detection assay based on Luminex technology, which can be integrated into ART proceedings, allowing sHLA-G quantification in sample volumes of only 10 microl within 1.5 hours. Using this method, sHLA-G levels of 526 single-embryo cultures, 47 two-embryo cultures, and 15 three-embryo cult

Nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) lesions lead to changes of neuronal activity in basal ganglia nuclei such as the globus pallidus (GP, the rodent homolog of lateral globus pallidus), entopeduncular nucleus (EP, the rodent homolog of medial globus pallidus), substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNR), and subthalamic nucleus (STN). We investigated in rats whether embryonic mesencephalic DA neurons grafted in the striatum may affect the lesion-induced alterations of neuronal activity in these structures. Regional neuronal activity was determined by use of quantitative cytochrome oxidase histochemistry. I

The ontogenesis of the pineal gland of 30 bovine embryos (Bos taurus) has been analysed from 30 until 135 days of gestation by means of optical microscopy and immunohistochemical techniques. For this study, the specimens were grouped into three stages in accordance with the most relevant histological characteristics: Stage 1 (30 to 64 days of prenatal development); Stage 2 (70 to 90 days) and Stage 3 (106 to 135 days). In the cow, it is from 30 days of gestation that the first glandular outline becomes differentiated from the diencephalic ependyma of the third ventricle. This differentiation i

Tissue interactions play an essential role in organogenesis during embryonic development. However, virtually no attempts have been made to study the role of tissue interaction in pineal development. In the present study we examined the inductive role of the epidermis and mesenchyme in the morphogenesis of quail pineal glands. The pineal rudiment is first observed at embryonic day 2 (E2: 2 days of incubation) at the dorsal midline of the diencephalon as a short semi-spherical protrusion. Electron microscopic observations revealed that no mesenchymal cells are found between the epidermis and the

Evolutionary transitions are frequently associated with novel anatomical structures,1 but the origins of the structures themselves are often poorly known. We use developmental, genetic, and paleontological data to demonstrate that the therian sternum was assembled from pre-existing elements. Imaging of the perinatal mouse reveals two paired sternal elements, both composed primarily of cells with lateral plate mesoderm origin. Location, articulations, and development identify them as homologs of the interclavicle and the sternal bands of synapsid outgroups. The interclavicle, not previously rec

Cadherins are cell adhesion molecules that play important roles in development of a variety of tissues and maintenance of adult structures. Although cadherin expression has been studied in detail in the central nervous system of several vertebrate species, little is known of their distribution in the developing and adult olfactory structures, and there is no published report, to our knowledge, of cadherin expression in fish olfactory system. In this study, we examined expression patterns of three cadherins, cadherin-1 (E-cadherin), cadherin-2 (N-cadherin), and cadherin-4 (R-cadherin), in the o

Background: Embryonic metanephros is the mammalian renal anlagen, which is considered as a potential source for the regeneration of functional whole kidneys. Some studies reported that metanephros implanted into unilateral nephrectomized animals can develop into kidney tissue. However, kidneys are nephrotoxic in renal failure patients, and whether metanephros can grow in nephrotoxic has not been reported. This study aims to investigate the growth of metanephros in acute nephrotoxic environment and analyze the therapeutic effect of metanephros microenvironment on acute kidney injury (AKI).Metho
