BACKGROUND: Melasma is an acquired pigmentation disorder with a complex multifactorial etiopathogenesis. Oral tranexamic acid (TA) is a promising drug for its treatment and may enhance outcomes when used in combination.

An unusual case of dystrophic calcinosis that occurred following trauma is presented. Calcinosis cutis is the deposition of calcium phosphate into the skin. It is classified as dystrophic if calcium and phosphorous levels are normal and tissue damage is present, idiopathic if calcium and phosphorous levels are normal and no tissue damage is present, or metastatic if there is hypercalcemia or hyperphosphatemia. The numerous causes of underlying tissue damage associated with dystrophic calcinosis are discussed.

Although tattoo artists provide tattoo aftercare instructions to their clients, recommendations are often not cost-effective or supported by evidence. A 22-year-old man developed a pruritic red rash over his healing tattoo one week after receiving the tattoo. Although multiple queries were negative, the patient did note use of a scented lotion before the eruption. We report a typical case of Sjogren-Larsson syndrome in a male patient, aged 20. The Sjogren-Larsson syndrome is a neurocutaneous, autosomal recessive and disabling condition, characterized by congenital ichthyosis, spastic paraplegia and mental retardation. It is caused by deficiency of the microsomal enzyme fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase. It has no cure, but most patients survive up to an adult age. Treatment should be multidisciplinary and dermatological therapy aims at relieving the persistent itching and ichthyosis.

Promoting tissue viability and caring for skin damaged as a result of radiotherapy are critical to the quality of care patients receive. However, few nurses recognise fully the effect of radiotherapy on tissue viability and wound healing. This article considers the causes and types of skin damage resulting from radiotherapy treatment that nurses may encounter, and how this damage can be graded. Based on the extent of skin reaction to radiotherapy, management options are explored, illustrated by a case study. A guide to product selection, derived from the authors' experience, is presented.
