[Endocardial fibroelastosis in infants observed at the children's ward of the County Hospital in Włocławek (author's transl)].

The authors have observed eight children suffering from endocardial fibroelastosis at the Children's Ward of the Ziemia Kujawska county hospital in Włocławek. The diagnosis was confirmed by autopsy. In five cases it was isolated fibroelastosis in the remaining three cases fibroelastosis was complicated by other heart malformations. In most of the patients severe symptoms appeared within the first six months of life. All the observed children died in the first two years of life. Death occurred within one day to six months after the appearance of symptoms. The main symptoms were present in ECG, …

Endocardial fibroelastosis causing sudden death in an infant: Autopsy case report of an unusual lesion.

Endocardial fibroelastosis is characterized by proliferation of both elastic and collagenous fibers within the endocardium, causing diffuse or localized thickening. A four-and-a-half-month-old baby was admitted to a local hospital, with a history of seizures for one day. Baby developed features of heart failure and died within one week after admission. At the post-mortem examination, heart was found to be enlarged with dilated ventricles. The endocardium of left ventricle was markedly thickened with a whitish appearance. Histopathology showed a thick layer of collagenous fibrous tissue in the …

[Echocardiographic findings and function analysis of the left ventricle in infants with endocardial fibroelastosis (author's transl)].

7 infants with the clinical picture and the typical hemodynamic and angiocardiographic findings of endocardial fibroelastosis were studied echocardiographically. The echocardiograms were digitized and analyzed by the method of Gibson and Brown and compared with those of 8 normal infants. The echoes of EFE-patients showed a nearly twice as large LV-diameter. The mitral valve was displaced posteriorly, the septal motion in 4 of them abnormal. The shortening fraction was significantly reduced, the LPEP/LVET quotient increased. The comparison of LPEP with the Q to mitral valve closing interval rev…

[A rare case of endocardial fibroelastosis in the left atrium simulating mitral stenosis (author's transl)].

A rare case of primary endocardial fibroelastosis, involving only the left atrium, simulating mitral stenosis is reported; the clinical and hemodynamic features which led to the diagnosis of mitral stenosis are described. The authors discuss the data upon which a differential diagnosis between the two similar diseases can be established. The suggest that isolated fibroelastosis of the left atrium could have been developed slowly because of ipoxia of the left atrium for agenesia of the circumflex coronary artery. An operation of endotelial decortication of the left atrium is described.

Patterns of endocardial fibroelastosis without atrioventricular block in fetuses exposed to anti-Ro/SSA antibodies.

Anti-Ro/SSA-antibody-mediated endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE) without atrioventricular (AV) block at presentation is a rare cardiac phenotype. We report on 11 fetuses with this rare type of anti-Ro/SSA-antibody-mediated cardiac involvement, presenting with a distinctive echocardiographic pattern of EFE. Eleven fetuses with isolated EFE at presentation were included from four cardiac centers, and experienced fetal cardiologists reached a consensus regarding EFE location on echocardiography at presentation. Interval changes to subsequent fetal and postnatal echocardiograms were assessed to eval…

Fetal echocardiographic assessment of endocardial fibroelastosis in maternal anti-SSA antibody-associated complete heart block.

BACKGROUND: There are few reports describing the features of maternal anti-SSA antibody-associated congenital complete heart block (CCHB) patients developing endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE). The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features and the outcome of patients with CCHB, with or without EFE. METHODS AND RESULTS: Over a 20-year period, 12 consecutive patients diagnosed with maternal anti-SSA antibody-associated CCHB were identified. The maternal anti-SSA antibody levels were measured and fetal echocardiographic findings were reviewed. The ratios of the thickness of the endoc…

Endocardial Fibroelastosis as an Early and Isolated Ultrasound Marker of Anti-Ro/SSA(B) Antibodies in the Fetus.

A rare case of isolated fetal endocardial fibroelastosis associated with anti-Ro/SSA and SSB antibodies is presented. The only abnormal ultrasound finding was excessive brightness of the endocardium, particularly at the level of the crux cordi, the atrioventricular plane, and the outflow tracts, in the presence of normal myocardial contractility and normal function of the semilunar and atrioventricular valves.

Clinical and necropsy evaluation of endocardial fibroelastosis in a mixed-breed cat with left side heart failure.

A two-month-old, male intact, mixed-breed cat weighing 0.6 kg was presented with respiratory distress and anorexia. From the transthoracic echocardiographic, reduced fractional shortening (FS) and increased endocardial echogenicity were recognised with severe congestive heart failure (CHF). The kitten was administered an antibiotic and pimobendane under oxygen supplementation in an ICU cage. However, the respiratory condition worsened and the cat died the next day, and the subsequent necropsy and histopathology examinations confirmed endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE). There is a lack of informa…

Loss of Nexilin function leads to a recessive lethal fetal cardiomyopathy characterized by cardiomegaly and endocardial fibroelastosis.

The Nexilin F-Actin Binding Protein (Nexilin) encoded by NEXN is a cardiac Z-disc protein important for cardiac function and development in … fs*3)). Moreover, autopsy and histology staining declared that they presented with cardiomegaly and endocardial fibroelastosis. Immunohistochemistry staining for Nexilin in the affected fetuses revealed reduced antibody staining and loss of striation in the heart, supporting loss of Nexilin function. Clinical examination of seven heterozygote carriers confirmed dilated card …

Recessive ciliopathy mutations in primary endocardial fibroelastosis: a rare neonatal cardiomyopathy in a case of Alstrom syndrome.

Among neonatal cardiomyopathies, primary endocardial fibroelastosis (pEFE) remains a mysterious disease of the endomyocardium that is poorly genetically characterized, affecting 1/5000 live births and accounting for 25% of the entire pediatric dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) with a devastating course and grave prognosis. To investigate the potential genetic contribution to pEFE, we performed integrative genomic analysis, using whole exome sequencing (WES) and RNA-seq in a female infant with confirmed pathological diagnosis of pEFE. Within regions of homozygosity in the proband genome, WES analysi…
