Endocrine tumors as part of inherited tumor syndromes.

The endocrine system is an embryological diverse system consisted of a variety of glands, such as pituitary, parathyroid, thyroid, adrenal, endocrine pancreas, and the diffuse neuroendocrine system. Endocrine tumor can be presented as a sporadic event, or as part of an inherited tumor syndrome. During the past century, inherited tumor syndromes have emerged as an important group of diseases. With the growing knowledge of each inherited tumor syndrome in the molecular genetic level, many changes in clinical management have occurred. This review focuses on the endocrine tumors involving the pitu

PER1 Oscillation in Rat Parathyroid Hormone and Calcitonin Producing Cells.

Many endocrine glands exhibit circadian rhythmicity, but the interplay between the central circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the peripheral endocrine clock, and hormones is sparsely understood. We therefore studied the cellular localizations of the clock protein PER1, parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin (CT) in the parathyroid and thyroid glands, respectively. Thyroid glands, including the parathyroids, were dissected at different time-points from rats housed in 12 h:12 h light-darkness cycles, and were double-immunostained for PER1 and PTH or CT. Sera were analyzed fo…

Endocrine and metabolic abnormalities among HIV-infected patients: a current review.

Multiple endocrine and metabolic abnormalities have been reported among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients since the pre-antiretroviral therapy era. These abnormalities present with either subclinical or overt clinical features. Endocrine and metabolic abnormalities primarily occur due to the direct destructive effects of HIV, malignancies and opportunistic infections on the varied endocrine glands and antiretroviral therapy-associated toxicities. This article offers a broad review on the commonly encountered endocrine and metabolic abnormalities among HIV-infected patients. Timely en…

Validity of dual tracer 99mTc-tetrofosmin and 99mTc-pertechnetate subtraction parathyroid scintigraphy in patients with primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is an endocrine disease with the third highest incidence of all endocrine disorders after diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism. pHPT is typically caused by a solitary parathyroid adenoma, less frequently by multiple parathyroid gland disease (MGD) and rarely by parathyroid carcinoma. Secondary hyperparatyroidism (sHPT) is a common complication in patients with chronic renal failure. The aim of this study was to estimate sensitivity of dual tracer 99mTc-tetrofosmin and 99mTc-pertechnetate subtraction scintigraphy in detection of abnormal parat

[About a case of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1. Review of some clinical manifestations and treatment controversies].

The rare hereditary syndrome, multiple endocrine neoplasia type1 (MEN-1), is known to predispose affected individuals to endocrine neoplasms in a variety of tissues such as the parathyroid glands, the pituitary gland and the gastrointestinal tract. We describe the case of a man with traditionally-described manifestations (hyperparathyroidism and gastrinoma) and with other tumoral lesions arising from endocrine cells (insulinoma, gastric carcinoid, adrenal adenoma and pancreatic non-functioning neuroendocrine tumors) and non-endocrine cells (lipoma and collagenoma). Frequent recurrences in susc

Recent advances in endocrine organoids for therapeutic application.

The endocrine system, consisting of the hypothalamus, pituitary, endocrine glands, and hormones, plays a critical role in hormone metabolic interactions. The complexity of the endocrine system is a significant obstacle to understanding and treating endocrine disorders. Notably, advances in endocrine organoid generation allow a deeper understanding of the endocrine system by providing better comprehension of molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis. Here, we highlight recent advances in endocrine organoids for a wide range of therapeutic applications, from cell transplantation therapy to drug toxic…

Coronaviruses and Endocrine System: A Systematic Review on Evidence and Shadows.

Coronaviruses are a big family of viruses that can infect mammalians and birds. In humans they mainly cause respiratory tract infections, with a large spectrum of severity, from mild, self-limited infections to highly lethal forms as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Scanty data are reported for the involvement of endocrine glands in human coronaviruses, in particular SARS-CoV-2. In this review, we summarize endocrinological involvement in human coronaviruses, including data…

Reoperation for hyperparathyroidism in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1.

BACKGROUND: Patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 and hyperparathyroidism often undergo multiple operations because of inadequate initial surgery, presence of supernumerary and ectopic glands, regrowth of remnant glands, or autograft hyperfunction. Management of this patient population is complex. METHODS: From January 1975 to December 2000 we performed 94 reoperative parathyroidectomies consisting of 79 neck reexplorations, 12 autograft removals, and 3 median sternotomies in 75 patients. Data were gathered by retrospective chart review and follow-up telephone interviews. RESULTS

Occupational and environmental agents as endocrine disruptors: experimental and human evidence.

In the last few years great concern has arisen from the description of adverse endocrine effects of several occupational and environmental chemical agents on human and/or wildlife health. Such agents may exert their effects directly, specifically binding to hormone receptors, and/or indirectly, by altering the structure of endocrine glands and/or synthesis, release, transport, metabolism or action of endogenous hormones. Many studies have been focused on the outcomes of the exposure to those chemicals mimicking estrogenic or androgenic actions. Nonetheless, the disruption of other hormonal pat…

Endocrine Emergencies.

Endocrine emergencies encompass a group of conditions that occur when hormonal deficiency or excess results in acute presentation. If these endocrine disorders are not rapidly identified or if specific treatment is delayed, significant complications or even death may occur. This article outlines the basics of endocrine emergencies involving the thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary, pancreas, and adrenal glands. It discusses various causative factors, diagnostic approaches, and treatment modalities, emphasizing the significance of preventive measures. This article is aimed at guiding health care pro

Endocrine cells and blood vessels work in tandem to generate hormone pulses.

Hormones are dynamically collected by fenestrated capillaries to generate pulses, which are then decoded by target tissues to mount a biological response. To generate hormone pulses, endocrine systems have evolved mechanisms to tightly regulate blood perfusion and oxygenation, coordinate endocrine cell responses to secretory stimuli, and regulate hormone uptake from the perivascular space into the bloodstream. Based on recent findings, we review here the mechanisms that exist in endocrine systems to regulate blood flow, and facilitate coordinated cell activity and output under both normal phys

Presence of chromogranin A, B and C in bovine endocrine and nervous tissues: a comparative immunohistochemical study.

Antisera against chromogranin A, B and C were used to study the distribution of these acidic proteins in bovine endocrine and nervous tissues. The three chromogranins occur together in several endocrine organs (adrenal medulla, anterior pituitary, endocrine pancreas) and in sympathetic ganglion cells. In the posterior pituitary, only chromogranin C and in the intermediate lobe only A and C are found. The parathyroid gland contains only A, and enterochromaffin cells are immunoreactive for A and B. Cells of the thyroid gland and some cells of the anterior pituitary apparently do not contain any

The Spectrum of Endocrine Pathology.

Endocrine pathology comprises a spectrum of disorders originating in various sites throughout the body. Some disorders affect endocrine glands, and others arise from endocrine cells that are dispersed in non-endocrine tissues. Endocrine cells can broadly be classified as neuroendocrine, steroidogenic, or thyroid follicular cells; these three families have distinct embryologic origins, morphologic structure, and biochemical hormone synthetic pathways. Lesions affecting the endocrine system include developmental abnormalities, inflammatory processes that can be infectious or autoimmune, hypofunc…
