Perianal mass and recurrent cellulitis due to Enterobius vermicularis.

A unique case of enterobiasis presenting as recurrent cellulitis and a perianal mass in a six-year-old girl is reported. Complicated perianal lesions due to Enterobius are unusual. Only 10 previous cases are known, with unclear pathogenesis in most of them, although mucosal breaches and perianal crypt or gland entry have been postulated. The association of the mass in this case with a deep crypt, and the histopathologic finding of squamous epithelium focally surrounding the granulomatous reaction to the Enterobius eggs suggest that the worm entered the perianal tissues via a crypt. Local secon…

Sexually transmitted diseases and traumatic problems in homosexual men.

In addition to gonorrhea and syphilis, both of which may develop primarily at anorectal or pharyngeal sites, a number of conditions, including Neisseria meningitidis urethritis, nonspecific urethritis, anorectal herpes, condyloma acuminatum, amebiasis, giardiasis, shigellosis, typhoid fever, enterobiasis, and hepatitis A and B, have been identified as being transmitted by male homosexual contact. Proctologic complications of anal intercourse include allergic reactions to anal lubricants, prolapsed hemorrhoids, and fistulas, and fissures. Rectosigmoid tears may result from fist, forearm, and fo…

Chronic sialoadenitis caused by Enterobius vermicularis: case report.

Enterobius vermicularis infection, an oro-faecal transmitted parasitosis, is a frequent finding in infant communities. Enterobius vermicular … rature confirms that this is a very rare site and it would appear to be the first report concerning enterobiasis in the salivary glands. Authors advance a hypothesis concerning a possible pathogenic mechanism.

Hepatitis and other sexually transmitted diseases in gay men and in lesbians.

The prevalence of most sexually transmitted diseases is disproportionately increased in gay men and paradoxically decreased in lesbian women. The spectrum of diseases seen in gay men include a variety of enteric infections including hepatitis A, shigellosis, salmonellosis, Campylobacter enteritis, amebiasis, giardiasis, and enterobiasis as well as the more common sexually transmitted diseases. Hepatitis B is endemic in gay male populations. The patterns of sexual behavior are the major factors contributing to this unique epidemiology and pathology. Increased sexual activity explained by the un…

Pathology of tropical appendicitis.

Over the past 25 years, 2921 appendicectomies were performed at this hospital. All were subjected to routine histopathological examination. In 95% of cases, histopathological examination did not add any further information but in 153 (5%) cases, clinically important pathological findings were detected for the first time. Seventy (2.3%) specimens showed typical evidence of tuberculosis. Parasitic infestation was detected in 75 (2.5%), including enterobiasis (1.4%), amoebiasis (0.5%), ascariasis (0.5%), ascariasis with trichuriasis (0.05%), and taeniasis (0.05%). Other lesions found were mucocel…

Enterobius gregorii--reality or fiction?

Authors present findings based on the actual epidemiologic situation of incidence of E. vermicularis (Linnaeus, 1758) which is till now the uniquely diagnosed parasite of Enterobius species in human population in Slovak Republic. They compared methods used in our laboratories for detection of propagation stages of E. vermicularis ova with methods used in other laboratories, which detect various propagation stages directly in stool. The authors found differences in detection and identification of adult female and male parasites. The relevance of sings for Enterobius gregorii (Hugot, 1983) diagn

Intestinal tuberculosis in a child: a case report.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease and one of the major causes of mortality worldwide, especially in children under the age of 15 years. Abdominal TB includes TB of bowel, peritoneum, lymph nodes, or other solid organs, with a predominance of intestinal and peritoneal forms of the disease. Most pediatric cases may be misdiagnosed due to subclinical symptoms. This case report describes an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) complicated by bowel obstruction. No prior recommendation for surgical therapy resulted in a significant complication of enterobiasis. ITB i…

This study was cond … ples and E. vermicularis eggs were observed in 5.5% of selotype samples. The rate of Giardiasis and Enterobiasis was found to be significantly higher in children still living and studying in temporary houses and schools years after the earthquakes (P < 0.05). Improving Adherence to World Health Organization Guidelines for Pinworm Treatment in Two Primary Healthcare Centers in Misan Province: A Clinical Audit.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths, including enterobiasis (pinworm), remain a significant cause of morbidity, especially among children in moderate and low-resourced countries. Given the noticeable recurrence of this infestation in clinical practice and the distress it causes to children and their families, this audit was carried out to improve adherence to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines regarding pinworm treatment and prevention, specifically focusing on correct dosing, repeat dosing intervals, household contact treatment, and hygiene education. METHODOLOGY: A clinical a…

[Enterobius gregorii Hugot, 1983 recovered from school children in Kangwon-Do, Korea].

Hugot (1983), Hugot and Tourte-Schaefer (1985) reported that nematodes of the genus Enterobius causing human enterobiasis might be classified into two different species on the basis of the size and shape of spicule in male worms. E. gregorii Hugot, 1983 has significantly shorter spicules in males than those in E. vermicularis. A total of 194 male Enterobius were collected from 17 schoolchildren by anthelmintics at Wonju, Kangwon-do. The sizes of spicules and morphologies were comparatively observed. Two different types of spicules in male Enterobius were also observed in Korea. Out of 112 male…

"Diagnostic challenges, atypical presentations, and therapeutic implications in ectopic Enterobius vermicularis infections: a global systematic review.".

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis is recognized as the second most common human nematode, primarily inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract and mostly affecting children. However, ectopic infections (where the parasite migrates to the extra intestinal sites) although rare, have been increasingly reported and pose diagnostic challenges due to atypical clinical presentations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA guideline was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for relevant articles published from 1972 to July 2025. Forty articles rep
