Role of posterior tibial nerve stimulation in the treatment of refractory monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the early clinical and urodynamic results of posterior tibial nerve stimulation in patients with refractory monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We randomly assigned 28 patients with refractory monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis to 2 equal groups. Group 1 received a weekly session of posterior tibial nerve stimulation for 12 weeks and group 2 was the placebo group. Evaluation was performed in each group at baseline and after posterior tibial nerve stimulation to compare clinical and urodynamic findings. Another clinical assessment was done 3 months …

Nocturnal polyuria and nocturnal arginine vasopressin (AVP): a key factor in the pathophysiology of monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis.

AIMS: To identify the relationship between nocturnal AVP deficiency, nocturnal polyuria (NP), and low urinary osmolality in children suffering of primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (NE). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 50 children (28 males and 22 females) with primary monosymptomatic NE and 30 non enuretic children of the same age group (controls). Night samples of blood and urine were obtained for AVP, blood osmolality, and urine osmolality. In addition, volume frequency charts, arousal threshold, and urodynamics were performed for these children. RESULTS: Twenty eight (56…

Urine output rate and maximum volume voided in school-age children with and without nocturnal enuresis.

OBJECTIVE: To compare urine volumes voided and output rates in prepubertal children with and without monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE), to investigate the balance between nocturnal urine output and functional bladder capacity. STUDY DESIGN: In 76 prepubertal children with MNE, all voidings were collected over 48 hours: bedwetting volume (BWV), early-morning voiding after a dry night (EMV), and other voided volumes (VV). Output rates were calculated based on volumes voided and time intervals. Data collected in 50 typical prepubertal children were used for comparison. In both populations…

["Enuresis diurna" is not a diagnosis--new results on classification, pathogenesis and therapy of functional urinary incontinence in childhood].

Newer research results have shown that the previous classification of enuresis into nocturnal, nocturnal and diurnal and diurnal forms is not sufficient. Day wetting constitutes a heterogeneous group of syndromes, which should be considered as functional urinary incontinences and which require differentiated diagnostics and therapies. General aspects of functional urinary incontinence are discussed, including: classification, epidemiology, symptomatology, especially the association with urinary tract infections, vesicoureteral reflux, obstipation and encopresis. The rate of psychiatric problem…

Beyond the bed: How family dynamics shape children's experiences of nocturnal enuresis in multigenerational Chinese families.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how children with nocturnal enuresis (NE) experience their condition within the context of multigenerational Chinese family dynamics and to inform child- and family-centered healthcare approaches. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study with embedded ethnographic elements, guided by the Family Management Style Framework, was conducted. Twelve families (49 individuals) were recruited from a pediatric urology clinic in XX. Data were collected through genogram-facilitated family interviews, child-centered interviews, and home observations. A hybrid thematic analysis was us…

Association between primary nocturnal enuresis and habitual snoring in children with obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) and obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS) are common problems during childhood, and population studies have reported a significant correlation between them. This study aimed to assess whether habitual snoring, mouth breathing and daytime sleepiness are associated with increased incidence of NE in children with OSAHS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Polysomnography was performed in 42 children (66.7% males), 3.5-14.5 years old, who were evaluated for sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). RESULTS: Fourteen out of 42 children (33.3%) presented mild, 16 out …

Management of a Complex Case of Primary Enuresis in an Adult With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Case Report.

Enuresis is the inability to maintain voluntary control over urination, which is a relatively uncommon condition in adults. Therefore, there is limited research exploring the management of primary enuresis in adult patients with comorbid attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), particularly in the Middle Eastern region. We report the case of a 28-year-old female patient who has been following up and treated for comorbid bipolar affective disorder (BAD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) for 12 years, complicated with primary enuresis. She was treated with 10 mg oral escitalopram…

Cost-utility and budget impact analysis of desmopressin for treating monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis in Thai children.

Monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE) imposes a notable clinical and psychosocial burden, yet no economic evaluations have been conducted in Thailand. This study conducted the cost-utility analysis (CUA) and budget impact analysis (BIA) of desmopressin acetate compared with imipramine and no treatment in children aged ≥ 7 years with MNE who have not responded to behavioural management and not responded, or expected not to respond, to alarm therapy. A CUA was conducted from a partial societal perspective, and a BIA was undertaken from a payer perspective. Model parameters were source from pu…

The Resting-State Activities of the Angular Gyrus and the Micturition Desire-Awakening Function in Children With and Without Enuresis.

BACKGROUND: Micturition desire-awakening (MDA) function plays a pivotal role in the development of primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE); however, its neural correlates remain largely unexplored. Consequently, this study aimed to identify specific brain regional activities associated with MDA function. METHODS: Neuroimaging data were collected from 173 children with varying MDA functional grade scores at the Department of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Shanghai Children's Medical Center, from July 2018 to November 2022. Resting-state images were analyzed using whole-brain correlation tec…

Primary nocturnal enuresis as a risk factor for sleep disorders: an observational questionnaire-based multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) is a common problem in developmental age with an estimated overall prevalence ranging from 1.6% to 15%, and possible persistence during adolescence. There is a growing interest in the sleep habits of children affected by PNE, which is derived from the contradictory data present in clinical literature. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the presence of sleep disturbances in a population of children affected by PNE, and to identify whether PNE could be considered as a risk factor for sleep disturbances among children. MATERIALS AND METHOD…

[Toilet training in mental retardation; approach to diurnal enuresis in a 12-year-old boy with hemiparesis].

A 12-year-old boy with hemiparesis, severe mental retardation, reduced mobility and behavioural problems was not yet toilet trained. He was successfully trained using a behavioural treatment. The training program was based on gradual prolongation of urine retention, the introduction of behaviour restrictions, rewards for using the toilet and overcorrection using repeated exercises if diurnal enuresis occurred. A third of 4- to 18-year-olds with a cerebral palsy do not have diurnal bladder control at the age of 6, in contrast to 1-3% in the general population. An important cause of this differe…

Enterobiasis and its relationship with anal itching and enuresis among school-age children in Calabar, Nigeria.

The prevalence of enterobiasis and its relationship with anal itching and enuresis were investigated among 799, randomly selected children aged 5-14 years, who lived, either in an area of high population density or one with a much lower population density, in Calabar, Nigeria. The eggs of Enterobius vermicularis were found in anal swabs (collected with transparent adhesive tape) from 60 (7.5%) of the subjects tested, with the prevalence of infection appearing markedly higher in the 403 children from the area with a high population density than in the 396 from the less densely populated area (1…
