The management and treatment of environmental streptococcal mastitis.

Environmental streptococci are responsible for at least one third of all cases of clinical mastitis, with the proportion varying widely between herds. Each dairy farmer should know the etiology of mastitis in the herd to allow for appropriate management. Control requires lowering the prevalence of infection, and includes shortening the duration of and preventing new infections. Prompt and aggressive treatment of clinical cases may achieve a high clinical and bactriologic rate of cure. Dry-cow treatment remains highly effective in eliminating infection. Prophylactic dry-cow treatment remains of

Environmental exposure to asbestos in eastern Turkey.

In this study, the authors investigated the prevalence of asbestos-related disorders among the inhabitants of Güzelyurt, a town in Malatya, located in eastern Turkey. The authors examined river bed, white soil, and stucco samples taken from various locales in Güzelyurt, and they confirmed the presence of tremolite and chrysotile asbestos fibers. Subjects (N = 920; 449 males and 471 females) were examined by photofluoroscopy. Eighty-five patients (9.2%) had asbestos-related radiological findings; risk increased with age. Calcified pleural plaques were seen more frequently in individuals > or =

Environmental risk assessment and the intrusion of bias.

The concept of managing the environment and any associated human health impacts by means of such science-based tools as toxicological evaluation, risk assessment, and economic appraisal has become widely accepted in professional circles. These increasingly complex methodologies have not won universal support, however, even among the technically minded, and the wider public has in many cases remained sceptical. The public's seeming lack of enthusiasm has frequently been assigned to ignorance of science, irrationality even, and some attempts have been made to ameliorate the situation by means of

Environmental co-factors in HPV carcinogenesis.

Epidemiological studies have shown that only a small fraction of women infected with oncogenic HPV types will eventually progress to high-grade intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) and cervical cancer (CC). Because infection by oncogenic HPVs is a necessary but not a sufficient cause of CC, it has been assumed that other factors, acting in conjunction with HPV, influence the risk of transition from cervical HPV infection to cervical malignancy. This paper reviews the epidemiological evidence for the role of environmental co-factors in HPV carcinogenesis as assessed from selected studies that report

Imaging of thoracic occupational and environmental malignancies.

The imaging features of occupational lung cancer are similar to those of nonoccupational cancer. Occupational lung cancer in patients with asbestos exposure must be differentiated from mimics such as round atelectasis and fissural pleural plaques. Mesothelioma remains a largely incurable tumor, though treatment options are expanding. CT, MRI, and PET scanning may all have complementary roles in staging mesothelioma.

Review: occupational and environmental lung disease.

Occupational and environmental lung disease is a vast topic. Therefore, this review focuses on areas that represent new clinical insights that have not been addressed recently in Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine. The topics are considered important for the future and emphasize diseases that strike large numbers of people or exposures that affect large segments of the population. This review highlights literature published between the years 2000 to 2001 related to air pollution, occupational asthma, lung diseases in agricultural workers, nylon flock workers lung disease, pneumoconiosis, an

Children. The unwitting target of environmental injustices.

Children have little control over where they live, what they eat, the financial circumstances of their families, or the developmental activities and behaviors that make them vulnerable to environmental contaminants. Minority and poor families disproportionately live in communities with landfills, hazardous waste facilities, incinerators, industrial plants, and old housing with poor indoor air quality and lead-based paint. Residents of these communities are also more likely than are more affluent communities to consume fish on a regular basis from local waters, many of which have banned fishing

[Mandibular growth, its environmental interactions].

A thorough knowledge of mandibular growth is necessary for proper comprehension of growth disorders and malformations affecting the lateral cranio-facial region. The growth mechanisms are complex and multifactorial, the mandible itself is subdivided into two heterogeneous and interdependent segments, as far as growth is concerned. These are the ramus and the corpus. The ramus is interacting with the middle cranial base through the TMJ and the temporo-pterygoid muscle belt. The mandibular body is interacting with the maxilla and the anterior cranial base. Its occlusal role is a function of the

Forced hyperphasia and environmental dependency syndrome.

A distinctive, language related fragment of the environmental dependency syndrome is described: compulsive, involuntary, environmentally dependent speaking. Because this syndrome represents the observe of aphasia, it is named forced hyperphasia. An 84 year old woman with acute left frontal infarction was admitted to hospital with gait disturbance, forced grasp reflex, and striking imitation behaviour. After 2 weeks her imitation behaviour disappeared, but an equally striking new behaviour emerged. In the presence of others she would call out the names of objects in the room, and also call out

Environmental contaminants and human health in the Arctic.

Monitoring of human exposure to persistent organic pollutants POPs and heavy metals have taken place since 1994 in a circumpolar study conducted under the Arctic monitoring and assessment programme (AMAP). The study has confirmed that Arctic populations relying on marine food (Inuit) have an exposure level of POPs and methyl mercury related to the amount of traditional food eaten and in some areas at a level where health effects cannot be excluded. Weighing the benefits of traditional food against the risks, AMAP have so far recommended that consumption of traditional food continues. There is

Environmental risk factors in Parkinson's disease.

We studied the environmental risk factors of Parkinson's disease (PD) in Finland, particularly those related to rural environment, in a prevalence material in 1992. The population numbered 196,864 people, including urban and rural areas. In this community-based study, we used a case-control method with personal investigation of the case subjects (n = 123) and matched control subjects (n = 246). Analyses were carried out by conditional logistic regression model. Case subjects had far fewer domestic animals at home during their lifetime, including cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens. The difference

Environmentally friendly lubricating oil candidate.

Synthetic lubricating oils based on renewable sources, excluding petroleum, have a great importance among all of the lubricating oil alternatives that are included in the research field about clean and environmentally friendly lubricating oil technologies. One of the environmentally friendly lubricating oils is a vegetable oil-based product. In this study, the esterification product of oleic acid with a fraction of molasses fusel oil as a lubricating oil candidate was determined according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard tests. The results indicate that the est

Wegener's granulomatosis: role of environmental exposures.

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) remains unknown. The predominant involvement of the airways and the presence of neutrophilic alveolitis at disease onset have led us to postulate that an inhaled agent may trigger the onset of WG. This study is designed to analyze differences in self-reported environmental exposures between patients with WG and various control populations. METHODS: We conducted a standard interviewer-administered questionnaire case controlled survey of 101 patients with WG, 54 healthy controls, 24 patients with sarcoidosis or idiopathic pulmonary fibros

Environmental complex mixture toxicity assessment.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) was found as a contaminant in the well supplying water to an aquatic testing laboratory. The groundwater was routinely screened by a commercial laboratory for volatile and semivolatile compounds, metals, herbicides, pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency methods. Although TCE was the only reportable peak on the gas chromatograph, with average concentrations of 0.200 mg/l, other small peaks were also present, indicating the possibility that the contamination was not limited to TCE alone. A chronic 6-month carcinogenicity assa

Male reproductive health and environmental xenoestrogens.

Male reproductive health has deteriorated in many countries during the last few decades. In the 1990s, declining semen quality has been reported from Belgium, Denmark, France, and Great Britain. The incidence of testicular cancer has increased during the same time incidences of hypospadias and cryptorchidism also appear to be increasing. Similar reproductive problems occur in many wildlife species. There are marked geographic differences in the prevalence of male reproductive disorders. While the reasons for these differences are currently unknown, both clinical and laboratory research suggest
