Parasite transmission in social interacting hosts: monogenean epidemics in guppies.

BACKGROUND: Infection incidence increases with the average number of contacts between susceptible and infected individuals. Contact rates ar … population has never been tested experimentally. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, we examine epidemics using a common ectoparasite, Gyrodactylus turnbulli infecting its guppy host (Poecilia reticulata). Hosts were maintained at different densities (3, 6, 12 and 24 fish in 40 L aquaria), and we monitored gyrodactylids both at a population and individu …

Demography and diffusion in epidemics: malaria and black death spread.

The classical models of epidemics dynamics by Ross and McKendrick have to be revisited in order to incorporate elements coming from the demography (fecundity, mortality and migration) both of host and vector populations and from the diffusion and mutation of infectious agents. The classical approach is indeed dealing with populations supposed to be constant during the epidemic wave, but the presently observed pandemics show duration of their spread during years imposing to take into account the host and vector population changes as well as the transient or permanent migration and diffusion of …

Epidemics of panic during a bioterrorist attack--a mathematical model.

A bioterrorist attacks usually cause epidemics of panic in a targeted population. We have presented epidemiologic aspect of this phenomenon as a three-component model--host, information on an attack and social network. We have proposed a mathematical model of panic and counter-measures as the function of time in a population exposed to a bioterrorist attack. The model comprises ordinary differential equations and graphically presented combinations of the equations parameters. Clinically, we have presented a model through a sequence of psychic conditions and disorders initiated by an act of bio…

Mathematical modelling of epidemics under specific regard of adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis.

At first ADV is presented as a typical pandemic. The contagiosity of adenovirus is high because of the viability of the virus on inorganic surfaces in medical offices up to 35 days. Outbreaks and epidemics occur 3-30 days after infection, which is mainly contracted from medical facilities. EKC is considered a notifiable condition in most countries, and outbreaks, suspects and infections must be reported. Symptoms like "pink eye", foreign body sensations, photophobia, pain, signs such as follicles, hemorrhages and corneal infiltrates, and vision decrease associated with malaise are frequently o…

Management of disease control and epidemics in AI in Denmark.

The author's presentation constituted a survey of the control of contagious diseases at Danish AI stations. The control is performed in accordance with EU regulations and requires documented freedom from Aujeszky's disease, Classical Swine Fever and Brucellosis (based on blood testing) before transfer to quarantine sections and to AI stations. The Danish regulations regarding Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) are described for both sero-positive and sero-negative stations. At some stations, all boars are vaccinated against both American PRRS (Ingelvac PRRS vet.) and European

Tuberculosis epidemics driven by HIV: is prevention better than cure?

OBJECTIVE: To compare the benefits of tuberculosis (TB) treatment with TB and HIV prevention for the control of TB in regions with high HIV prevalence. DESIGN AND METHODS: A compartmental difference equation model of TB and HIV has been developed and fitted to time series and other published data using Bayesian methods. The model is used to compare the effectiveness of TB chemotherapy with three strategies for prevention: highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the treatment of latent TB infection (TLTI) and the reduction of HIV transmission. RESULTS: Even where the prevalence of HIV i

Insurance and epidemics: SARS, West Nile virus and Nipah virus.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) reminds us that sudden disease emergence is a permanent part of our world--and should be anticipated in our planning. Historically the emergence of new diseases has had little or no impact beyond a small, localized cluster of infections. However, given just the right conditions, a highly virulent pathogen can suddenly spread across time and space with massive consequences, as has occurred on several occasions in human history. In the wake of the SARS outbreak, we are now forced to confront the unpleasant fact that human activities are increasing the fre

[The plague epidemics of Kunming, Yunnan in the Qing dynasty].

Based on the detailed records on the four plague epidemics of Kunming in the Qing dynasty, there are similar epidemical characteristics, viz., epidemics occurred at a time later than its surrounding regions, severe epidemics prevalent in both urban and rural areas, massive fatalities. The massive plague epidemics during Xianfeng and Tongzhi reigns were somewhat similar to that of the severe plague epidemics of 1347 in Europe, including rapid spreading and severe fatalities. The impetus of the former epidemic was the migration of army, while that of the latter, the cities as the centers of trad…

[Detection of meningococcal meningitis epidemics in Africa: a new recommendation].

In sub-Saharan Africa, the control of meningococcal meningitis epidemics relies on early epidemic detection and mass vaccination. However, experience shows that interventions are often initiated too late to have a significant impact on the epidemic. A new recommendation drafted by participants of a consensus meeting proposes an alert threshold and an epidemic threshold based on the weekly number or incidence of meningitis cases, according to the population size and the epidemic risk, resulting in indicators with high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of an emerging epidemic. Mening…

[Acute schistosomiasis or Katayama syndrome: apropos of 2 mini-epidemics].

Schistosomiasis, or bilharziasis, is often oligosymptomatic but there is also an acute form, the Katayama syndrome. Observation of two groups of travelers who swam in the same lake near Banfora in western Burkina Faso, separated by an interval of one year, illustrates the high infection rate of Schistosoma mansoni (100% of swimmers, of whom 82% were symptomatic and 55% presented with fever). The incubation period was 4 to 6 weeks after exposure. 10 of the 11 subjects had eosinophilia (> or = 500/mm3) and IFAT serology was positive in all tested subjects. More than one year after exposure, one

[Smallpox epidemics and folk's responses in the late Chosŏn period].

Smallpox was one of the most dreadful epidemic diseases in Korea until the early twentieth century. In the Chosŏn period, smallpox came to prevail more frequently and vigorously, and many people died of the disease. To cope with smallpox, the society of Chosŏn had various modes of measures, though they were not always effective, which included the government's rituals, medical men's prescriptions, and folk's recipes. Among various responses to smallpox, the recipes of folklore seem to be very interesting. While attitude toward other contagious diseases (e.g., typhoid fever, or malaria) mainly

Surveillance and control of meningococcal meningitis epidemics in refugee populations.

Epidemics of communicable diseases pose a direct threat to refugee and internally displaced populations, and could lead to high mortality rates and a disruption of basic health care services. Several large refugee populations live in regions of high meningococcal disease endemicity and their camps are at risk for outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis. Surveillance in these camps allows early detection and control of impending outbreaks. Confirmation of meningococcal disease can be performed under field conditions using simple techniques, such as latex agglutination. Isolates should be obtained…

Retrospective serological studies on dengue epidemics in Osaka and Okinawa.

In Japan, dengue epidemics were recorded once before the end of World War II (1942-1945) on the Main Islands and several times (1893-1955) on the Okinawa Islands. Blood samples were obtained from residents in Osaka and Okinawa, and their antibodies were examined by neutralization tests against dengue and Japanese encephalitis viruses. Of 60 serum samples each from Osaka and Okinawa, 11 and 15 sera, respectively, showed positive titers against one or more dengue serotypes. These results confirm that the epidemics had been very large. Moreover, the results showed that the epidemics had been due …

Plague in camels and goats: their role in human epidemics.

In 1976, in a small, remote Libyan village, one apparently sick camel was slaughtered and skinned, and the camel meat was distributed for human comsumption. A few days later, 15 villagers suffered a severe febrile illness. Of the five individuals who had participated in the killing and dispensation of the camel, all were dead within four days. When samples of serum from nine of the remaining patients were examined, seven were found to be positive for plague as determined by the passive hemagglutination test. Another six persons became ill after killing two goats, and the serum of one goat cont
