[Research progress on the epidemiology and risk factors of dry eye in children].

The prevalence of dry eye in children is increasing with changes in the environment and the widespread use of electronic products. However, due to poor ability to express themselves and hidden symptoms of children, lack of understanding of dry eye in children, children with dry eye are likely to be misdiagnosed. Dry eye can seriously affect the quality of children's learning, life, vision and visual development. Therefore, it is urgent to raise awareness of clinical workers about dry eye in children, prevent the occurrence of related complications of dry eye, and avoid permanent visual damage

Thyroid Eye Disease: Epidemiology, Natural History, and Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune disorder of the orbit and the most frequent extrathyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease but it may rarely occur in euthyroid/hypothyroid patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. EPIDEMIOLOGY: TED is a relatively infrequent disorder, particularly in its severe forms. Men tend to have more severe TED at an older age. The prevalence of TED is lower than in the past among patients with recent onset Graves' hyperthyroidism, and moderate-to-severe forms requiring aggressive treatments are no more than 5% to 6% of all cases. Epidemiology and risk factors of Japanese encephalitis in Taiwan, 2010-2022.

INTRODUCTION: Taiwan introduced a two-dose inactivated Japanese encephalitis (JE) mouse brain-derived (JE-MB) vaccine into routine childhood immunization in 1968, with booster vaccination implemented in 1974 and 1983. In 2017, JE-MB vaccine was replaced by a two-dose live-attenuated chimeric vaccine (JE-CV). After implementation of JE vaccination programs, JE cases have shifted from children to adults. In this study, we described the JE epidemiology and identify high-risk groups to further inform vaccine policy. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We extracted data from Taiwan's notifiable diseas

Update in the epidemiology, risk factors, screening, and treatment of diabetic retinopathy.

Despite progress in the treatment of diabetic macular edema and diabetic retinopathy, the rate of lower fundus examination due to limitations of medical resources delays the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. Therefore, implementation of automated diabetic retinopathy screening program and the identification of more specific and sensitive biomarkers are important for facilitating the earlier detection of diabetic macular edema and diabetic retinopathy to decrease the prevalence of poor vision and blindness.

Suicide along the Australian coast: Exploring the epidemiology and risk factors.

Suicide is an increasing global concern with multiple risk factors, yet location-based understanding is limited. In Australia, surf lifesavers (SLS) and lifeguards patrol the coast, performing rescues and assisting injured people, including people who suicide. This study is a descriptive epidemiological analysis of Australian coastal suicide deaths. The results will be used to inform training and support surf lifesaving personnel and suicide prevention organisations. This is a population-based cross-sectional study of suicide deaths at Australian coastal locations (between 1 January 2005 and 3

Sarcoidosis epidemiology: recent estimates of incidence, prevalence and risk factors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to describe the latest studies on sarcoidosis incidence, prevalence and risk factors with a special focus on reports in the last 2 years. The potential biases affecting these studies are discussed. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence and incidence of sarcoidosis vary greatly depending on region of the world. Variations in data sources and settings can affect estimates of the burden of sarcoidosis, sometimes making them difficult to compare across countries. It is not well understood how the distribution of sarcoidosis phenotypes differs across populati

Epidemiology, Predisposing Factors, and Outcomes of Drug-Induced Liver Injury.

Idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is an underreported and underestimated adverse drug reaction. A recent population-based study found a crude incidence of approximately 19 cases per 100,000 a year. Amoxicillin-clavulanate continues to be the most commonly implicated agent in most Western countries, reported to occur in approximately 1 of 2300 users. In patients with drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis, liver tests often do not normalize with cessation of the drugs and require corticosteroids. DILI associated with jaundice can lead to death from liver failure or require liver transpl

Epidemiology and Risk Factors for Severe Delayed Drug Hypersensitivity Reactions.

Severe delayed drug hypersensitivity reactions comprise different clinical entities and can involve different immune-mediated mechanisms. Common examples are severe cutaneous adverse reactions and druginduced internal organ injuries. The incidence of such reactions is overall low but seems to be on the rise reaching numbers as high as 9 per million individuals-years in the case of SJS/TEN and DRESS. Such conditions carry an important associated morbidity, and mortality can attain 40% in SJS/TEN patients, making these hypersensitivity reactions important targets when implementing preventive mea
