Surveillance culture of endoscope to monitor the quality of high-level disinfection of gastrointestinal reprocessing.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Inadequate reprocessing of endoscopes or endoscopic accessories may result in iatrogenic infection and present a risk to public health. The aim of this study is to utilize microbiological cultures of endoscopes to assess the adequacy of standard reprocessing procedures. METHODOLOGY: A prospective study to randomly cultures of endoscopes and colonoscopies immediately after the completion of the decontamination cycle monthly. The samples were obtained by flushing 50 ml sterile distilled water to the internal channel and collected into a sterile container. These samples were inc

Surgical masks: operative field contamination following visor-to-visor contact.

BACKGROUND: Clashing of surgical visor masks frequently occurs when two surgeons bend over an operative field simultaneously; however, it is unknown whether this results in contamination. The purpose of the present study was to determine the potential for operative field contamination following surgical visor-mask clashes. The nature of bacterial contamination was also assessed. METHODS: Thirty sham operative procedures were performed under normal operating conditions for a specified time period. The number of surgical visor mask clashes during each procedure was determined by randomization (

[An activated charcoal filter for eliminating volatile anesthetics. A contribution to the management of malignant hyperthermia].

Anesthesia machines may not be contaminated with anesthetic vapors when a patient susceptible to malignant hyperthermia (MHS) is to be anesthetized. A clean machine may not always be available, and recommended protocols for preparing a contaminated machine are cumbersome and time-consuming. We suggest the use of an activated charcoal filter that is easily assembled from spare parts available in many anesthesiology departments (Fig. 2). It consists of an HME container (Servo-Humidifier 150, Siemens-Elema), a sieve set from an anesthesia circuit (7a/8-ISO, Dräger, Lübeck), and grained activated

[The main principles of improving working and environmental conditions in gas-processing industry].

The major hygienically unfavourable factors in gas extraction industry include air contamination with natural gas components and its processing products, noise overload, exceedingly high (in summer) and low (in winter) temperatures at working sites. Primary health and environment related preventive measures should include the introduction of the most advanced techniques of purification of raw gas, exhausts into the atmosphere including hydrogen sulfide, sulphur dioxide and hydrocarbons, as well as further modernization of the technological equipment used with particular emphasis on the hermeti

[Some examples of infectious, chemical and biological risks in the operating theatre].

In the operating theatre, inhalation or prolonged contact with formalin or formaldehyde can cause irritation, allergic reactions and even cancer of the respiratory tract. Appropriate, safe equipment reduces these serious risks. Particular attention is paid to the risk of contamination by Aspergillus, which can be present on surfaces and in the air. In some blocks, cardboard boxes are prohibited to avoid this risk. Employers must put in place training and material measures to reduce the risk of blood exposure accidents; the professional must also get involved in the fight against this hazard.

High-Touch, High-Risk: An Exploratory Microbiome Analysis of Hospital Wheelchairs.

In this exploratory pilot study, quantitative analyses were performed on seven leather wheelchairs and the protective barrier was evaluated on three leather wheelchairs, while shotgun metagenomic sequencing (Illumina and Oxford Nanopore) was conducted on pooled samples obtained from seven leather and three fabric wheelchairs to characterize microbial DNA recovered from wheelchair surfaces under routine clinical conditions. Microbial DNA and biomass were detected on all sampled surfaces, with median DNA concentrations of approximately 0.015 ng/µL, median cell counts of approximately 4.8 × 105 c

Procedural modifications proposed for the screening of substances extracted from pharmaceutical packaging systems and medical devices with the goal of improving inter-laboratory consistency of the data generated.

Substances that migrate (leachables) into a pharmaceutical product from the materials that comprise its manufacturing, packaging, and/or delivery system(s) have the potential to negatively impact its safety and/or quality. Mitigating the impact of this interaction typically includes the screening of substances that can be extracted (extractables) from these materials using appropriate solvents and exposure conditions. Despite the importance of such extractable screening studies in assuring product quality and patient safety, it has become apparent that inconsistencies in their execution betwee

Bacterial Contamination of Angiographic Materials in Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroangiography.

PURPOSE: Bacterial contamination has been reported to occur during angiographies, although data on its frequency and relevance are limited. The purpose of our study was to determine whether angiographic materials such as catheters and guide wires remain sterile during angiographies. We sought to differentiate between different materials, and to detect the frequency, the extent and the spectrum of bacterial contamination. METHODS: We prospectively collected 698 fluid or material samples from 100 neuroangiographies. Per angiography we analyzed proximal ends and distal tips of catheters and guid

Ceiling-mounted far-UVC fixtures reduce the surface bioburden in occupied clinical areas.

Contaminated surfaces in clinics pose a pathogen transmission risk. Far ultraviolet-C light (UVC), with a favorable safety profile for human exposure, has the potential for continuous pathogen inactivation in occupied clinical areas. This study demonstrated real-world bioburden reduction on surfaces, despite frequent contamination from routine use by staff and patients in clinics.

Comparative efficacy of decontamination methods for laparoscopic equipment: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of manual cleaning, alkaline multi-enzyme immersion with ultrasonic cleaning, and automatic reprocessing machines in decontaminating laparoscopes through a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Sinomed, CNKI and Wanfang databases from inception to February 2025. Randomised controlled trials comparing different cleaning and disinfection methods for laparoscopes were included. The primary outcome was the qualifie

The quantification of surgical flow disruptions secondary to fogging and biofouling of endoscopic lens during endoscopic skull base surgeries.

PURPOSE: Despite significant progress in field of endoscopy, lens contamination (LC) continues to plague endoscopic surgeries. Apart from being an ergonomic nuisance, it potentially contributes to adverse surgical outcomes. The literature on the problem of LC during endoscopic skullbase surgeries (ESBSs) is lacking. The current study was conducted to address this lacuna. METHODS: In this study, operative videos of ESBSs performed by the author were retrospectively analysed. The videos were edited on Apple iMovie to identify surgical flow disruptions (SFDs) due to LC. The total number and dura

Incidence of residual biologic debris and contamination of reused bipolar vessel sealing devices after ethylene oxide sterilization following splenectomy.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to quantify the amount of biologic debris present within disposable bipolar vessel sealing devices after each use for canine splenectomies and determine the aerobic bacterial load of the debris following instrument resterilization with ethylene oxide. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational clinical study. STUDY POPULATION: Client-owned dogs (n = 40) presenting to a single specialty hospital for open, routine, or emergency splenectomies. METHODS: A total of 16 bipolar vessel sealing devices were randomly assigned to undergo one, two, three, or fou
