The clinical differentiation of nervous and muscular locomotor disorders of sheep in Australia.

Many of the nervous and muscular locomotor disorders that affect sheep throughout Australia are commonly referred to as "staggers" syndromes … udes the plant associated toxicities of phalaris staggers, perennial rye grass staggers and nervous ergotism (Claviceps paspali).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Dramatic Responses to Low-Dose Pramipexole in Painful Legs and Moving Toes Syndrome.

Painful legs and moving toes syndrome (PLMTS) is a rare movement disorder characterized by spontaneous abnormal, involuntary toe movements and unilateral or bilateral lower extremity pain that predominantly affects women in middle age or later. The background etiology of PLMTS includes peripheral neuropathy, a history of trauma, and nerve root damage, but the cause of the disease is often undetermined. The pain usually occurs first and is often more distressing to the patient than abnormal toe movement. Spontaneous resolution is rare, and symptomatic therapies include the oral administration o

European Academy of Neurology guideline on the management of medication-overuse headache.

BACKGROUND: The frequent use of medication to treat migraine attacks can lead to an increase in migraine frequency and is called medication-overuse headache (MOH). METHODS: Based on the available literature in this guideline, the first step in patient management is education and counselling. RESULTS: Patients with MOH should be managed by a multidisciplinary team of neurologists or pain specialists and behavioral psychologists. Patients in whom education is not effective should be withdrawn from overused drugs and should receive preventive treatment with drugs of proven efficacy. Patients wi

Acute Migraine Headache: Treatment Strategies.

Migraine is a primary headache disorder characterized by recurrent attacks. Acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, triptans, antiemetics, ergot alkaloids, and combination analgesics have evidence supporting their effectiveness in the treatment of migraine. Acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are first-line treatments for mild to moderate migraines, whereas triptans are first-line treatments for moderate to severe migraines. Although triptans are effective, they may be expensive. Other medications such as dihydroergotamine and antiemetics are recommended for use

Prevention and management of postpartum hemorrhage.

Postpartum hemorrhage, the loss of more than 500 mL of blood after delivery, occurs in up to 18 percent of births and is the most common maternal morbidity in developed countries. Although risk factors and preventive strategies are dearly documented, not all cases are expected or avoidable. Uterine atony is responsible for most cases and can be managed with uterine massage in conjunction with oxytocin, prostaglandins, and ergot alkaloids. Retained placenta is a less common cause and requires examination of the placenta, exploration of the uterine cavity, and manual removal of retained tissue.

Pleuropulmonary fibrosis after long-term treatment with the dopamine agonist pergolide for Parkinson Disease.

Dopamine agonists are increasingly used in the treatment of Parkinson disease, but they may cause serious adverse effects. In December 1983, symptoms of Parkinson disease developed in a 55-year-old man with no history of pulmonary disease, smoking, or asbestos exposure. He began treatment with dopamine agonists bromocriptine mesylate (in 1984) and pergolide mesylate (in 1989). In late 2000, pulmonary symptoms developed. Chest radiographs and computed tomographic findings showed a mass in the right upper lobe and effusion. A biopsy specimen showed pleural and parenchymal fibrosis. This syndrome

The history and rationale of the development of new drugs for migraine treatment.

Migraine is one of the most prevalent and disabling diseases in the world. Migraine attack treatments and prophylactic treatments of this disease are essential to lessen its individual, social, and economic impact. This is a narrative review of the main drugs used for treating migraine, as well as the experimental models and the theoretical frameworks that led to their development. Ergot derivatives, triptans, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, beta-blockers,: flunarizine,: valproic acid,: topiramate, onabotulinumtoxin A, ditans, monoclonal antibodies against CGRP

Migraine headaches: treatment limitations and opportunities.

In recent years, migraine treatment options have expanded to the extent that the practicing clinician now has a myriad of pharmacologic agents in varied drug classes and delivery systems from which to choose. Drug classes most commonly employed for treatment of migraine attacks include non-migraine-specific agents, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opioids, barbiturates, combination analgesics, and antiemetics, and migraine-specific agents, such as triptans and ergot alkaloids and derivatives. Delivery options range from conventional, orally disintegrating, and rapid-relea

The effect of some drugs with purported antianoxic effect on veratridine-induced purine release from isolated rat hypothalamic synaptosomes.

Several drugs claimed to protect against anoxic damage to the brain and/or to aleviate symptoms of senility were tested for their ability to influence purine overflow from hypothalamic synaptosomes. Theophylline did not influence the total purine release but tended to decrease the nucleoside and increase the nucleotide release. Cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase inhibitors were ineffective, whereas drugs that inhibit carrier mediated nucleoside transport inhibited veratridine-induced purine release. Some ergot derivatives, some vinca-analogues and the vasodilator ifenprodil also decreased sti

Drug-related cardiac valve disease.

Cardiac valve disease can involve one or more of the four heart valves. Chronic valve damage may remain asymptomatic for long periods but ultimately leads to haemodynamic overload of the heart. The most common causes of valve disease are rheumatic diseases, infections, chronic renal failure, malformations, and genetic diseases. Valve disease is often attributed to degeneration with no known cause. The frequency of drug-related valve disease has long been underestimated. Most implicated drugs have serotonergic properties, such as fenfluramine-derived amphetamines, including benfluorex. Rye ergot
