Hematologic and rheologic changes were examined in 49 Thoroughbreds before and after competitive racing. Mean postrace values for RBC count, hemoglobin concentration, and PCV increased by 58 to 61%, whereas blood viscosity increased 2 to 3 times. Erythropoietin level in the blood plasma, iron metabolism, and some erythron parameters characterizing anemia expression, erythropoiesis effectiveness and processes of hemoglobin synthesis were studied in patients with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). The results of the investigation helped the authors to establish that hormone production in IDA patients is under the control of a feedback mechanism that is functioning at a lower level as compared to other non-renal anemias. It has been suggested that optimum possible erythron functioning in IDA patients is achieved under these conditions.

Seventeen patients aged 7 to 33 months, including a pair of identical twin girls, came to the Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago, between January 1975 and December 1979 with transient normocytic anemia and reticulocytopenia. 5 elderly women developed pubic osteolysis after spontaneous fracture of the pubic bone. Radiographs showed gradual progression of the osteolysis, followed by callus formation, and bone union after 4-5 months. Bone mineral density was low in all patients. White blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein were normal. Urine deoxypyridinoline was high, but serum osteocalcin normal. Elderly women with spontaneous fractures and osteolysis of the pubic bone should be considered for evaluation of osteoporosis and treatment.

The influence of L. monocytogenes on the hemopoietic system was studied in mouse experiments. All elements of hemopoiesis were damaged. The most pronounced changes developed in erythropoiesis. This was testified by a decrease in erythrocyte count and hemoglobin content in peripheral blood, by the hypoplasia of the hemopoietic erythroid germ in the marrow, as well as by the decrease of yield in culture CFU-E. These changes in the hemopoietic tissue supposedly caused by the direct action of L. monocytogenes and its toxins.
