Results are presented of feeding tests carried out with three common anticoagulant rodenticides viz., coumatetralyl, fumarin and warfarin on three common species of commensal rodents i.e., Rattus rattus, Rattus norvegicus and Bandicota bengalensis. All three species of rodents were susceptible to anticoagulant rodenticides. However, the action of these compounds in B. bengalensis was comparatively slow. Coumatetralyl was found to be the most effective rodenticide followed by fumarin and warfarin. Liquid baits of these compounds are more effective in comparison to food baits.

A method for the determination of catecholamines (Cat-a-Kit; Upjohn Diagnostics) is discussed. It depends upon the enzymatic conversion of the catecholamines to their ring o-methylated analogues in the presence of s-adenosyl-L-methionine-methyl-14C and catechol-o-methyltransferase. Values obtained from the blood plasma of 16 tetraplegic and 11 healthy volunteers are reported. The advantages and disadvantages of the Cat-a-Kit are discussed.

Two urine dip-stick assays for glucose were studied and compared to a quantitative hexokinase procedure. We determined sensitivity, specificity, predictive value of "normal" and "abnormal" dip stick results, assay efficiency, technologist precision, and method association. Precision was poor. Attempts to estimate urine glucose concentration with the dip sticks frequently produced gross inaccuracies. We believe the dip stick glucose assay should be considered qualitative only; as a qualitative test, the dip sticks are fairly efficient at distinguishing glucose concentrations of less than 0.3 g/

There has been little basis on which to standardise a diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), and so 11 rheumatology units in the south and west of Great Britain have collaborated in a study to evaluate possible criteria. Symptoms and laboratory findings claimed to be of diagnostic value in PMR were included in an analysis of the features of 236 patients considered to have unequivocal PMR and 70 patients thought to have possible PMR. The results were compared with similar information from 253 patients with conditions that mimic PMR and from 201 consecutive new presentations to outpatients.

The records of the patients over 65 years undergoing jejunal biopsy in two Liverpool gastroenterology units were obtained. Biopsy failed in four of the 52 cases, diagnostic yield was 12% and only appeared to be of value in confirming the diagnosis of gluten-sensitive enteropathy (adult coeliac disease).

The fluorometric benzophenone procedure for diphenylhydantoin has been simplified by eliminating the need for preliminary extraction of plasma with an organic solvent. Assays are done directly on 0.2 ml of plasma by treating it with alkaline permanganate to form benzophenone, extracting the benzophenone with heptane, and then shaking the heptane layer with sulfuric acid and measuring the fluorescence of the acid layer. 119 kidneys demonstrating changes consistent with renal tuberculosis were studied in a total of 94 patients by means of selective, transfemoral renal antiography. In the first stage of the disease, this method detected parenchymal involvement which could not be visualized by excretory urography.
