Primary failure of eruption: From molecular diagnosis to therapeutic management.

INTRODUCTION: Primary Failure of Eruption (PFE) is a rare condition affecting posterior teeth eruption resulting in a posterior open bite malocclusion. Differential diagnosis like ankylosis or mechanical eruption failure should be considered. For non-syndromic forms, mutations in PTH1R, and recently in KMT2C genes are the known etiologies. The aim of this work was to describe the variability of clinical presentations of PFE associated with pathogenic variants of PTHR1. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Diagnosis of non-syndromic PFE has been suggested for three members of a single family. Clinical and ra

IgE-mediated allergy to local anaesthetics: separating fact from perception: a UK perspective.

Local anaesthetic (LA) agents have been routinely used in dentistry, ophthalmology, minor surgery, and obstetrics since the late nineteenth century. Reports relating to adverse reactions and LA allergy have appeared in the published literature for several years. However, the incidence of true, IgE-mediated LA allergy remains uncertain and is presumed to be very low. We critically reviewed the English language literature on suspected LA allergy and its investigation with the aim of estimating the reported prevalence and analysing the role of different tests currently used to identify and confir

Validity and Reliability of Rubrics for Assessment of Preclinical Orthodontic Practices in Dental Students.

Background: Objective assessment of preclinical dental practices remains challenging, as it requires consistency, transparency, and standardization in the evaluation of practical competencies. Rubrics have been proposed as useful tools for improving the quality of assessment; however, evidence regarding their psychometric properties in preclinical orthodontic education remains limited. Aim: This study aimed to analyze the reliability, internal structure, and academic usefulness of assessment rubrics applied to preclinical orthodontic practice in undergraduate dental education. Methods: A cross

The oral-gut-brain axis in periodontitis: microbial signaling in systemic and neuroinflammatory disease.

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the oral cavity, has been identified as a modifiable risk factor of the development of systemic and neurological disorders via a complicated interplay of microbiological, immunological, and neural interactions. Periodontal pathogens breach local immune homeostasis, are translocated to the gut and brain, and trigger a cascade of immune deregulation, leaky gut, and blood-brain barrier, thereby forming a tri-directional communication network that links local oral inflammation to systemic and neurovascular conditions. This review synthesizes existin

Seeking to achieve periodontal health in practice using the Healthy Gums DO Matter toolkit.

The pressures on the dental team to successfully manage and treat periodontal diseases in general practice are ever-mounting. Dental practitioners have a duty of care to screen, investigate, diagnose, risk assess and appropriately treat periodontal diseases using evidence-based practice. Once patients are stable, they must continue to monitor and risk assess patients in the maintenance phase. Managing periodontal diseases in general practice is challenging and this has been reflected in the rising trend in periodontal litigation. General practitioners see the complete spectrum of patients; fro

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the parotid gland in a patient with mixed connective tissue disease.

Oral health care providers are at a higher risk of being infected by novel coronavirus due to close proximity to patient's face and exposure to saliva while working on the patient. Thus, there is an urgent need to interpret the available literature in order to establish safe practices for dental professionals as well as limit the spread of infection through saliva. The study intends to provide up-to-date, compiled evidence-based information related to saliva and its association with COVID-19. It further provides suggestions for safe practices in dentistry in current pandemic times. Oral sympto

An innovative cell-based transplantation therapy for an immature permanent tooth in an adult: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Immature teeth with necrotic pulps present multiple challenges to clinicians. In such cases, regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) may be a favorable strategy. Cells, biomaterial scaffolds, and signaling molecules are three key elements of REPs. Autologous human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) play an important role in pulp regeneration. In addition, autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) have recently been demonstrated as effective biomaterial scaffolds in regenerative dentistry, whereas the latest generation of APCs-concentrated growth factor (CGF), especially liquid phase CGF (LP

Generating a consensus on an undergraduate curriculum for paediatric caries management: a protocol for a Delphi and nominal groups study.

BACKGROUND: Untreated dental caries is the most common condition to affect children globally, and significantly affects their oral health-related quality of life. Our understanding of caries and its management has progressed significantly over the past two decades, though a number of Dental Schools in the United Kingdom (UK) continue to teach traditional techniques, which no longer align with the evidence base. There is a clear need for an evidence-based curriculum for paediatric caries management for UK Dental Schools. This protocol details a study to generate consensus on what should be incl

Cumulative Bisphenol A Release and Elution Kinetics from Pediatric Restorative and Orthodontic Resin-Based Materials: An In Vitro LC-MS/MS Investigation.

Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) release from resin-based dental materials is a growing concern due to its potential endocrine-disrupting effects, particularly in pediatric patients. This in vitro study evaluated cumulative BPA release and elution kinetics from commonly used pediatric resin-based materials, due to the limited evidence available. Methods: Three restorative materials (Clearfil Majesty ES-2, Estelite Sigma Quick, and Stela Automix) and one orthodontic material (Transbond XT) were investigated. Eighteen disk-shaped specimens (5.5 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) were prepared fo

AI-Augmented Teach-Back in Dentistry: From Patient Education to Verified Clinical Understanding.

Oral diseases remain among the most prevalent chronic conditions worldwide, yet their prevention and long-term management depend heavily on patient understanding of self-care, maintenance protocols, and procedural risks. Existing educational programs have not solved this problem because most individuals do not understand dental health, and communication with patients remains poor, which results in poor treatment outcomes. The teach-back method functions as an evidence-based communication tool that helps staff members confirm that patients have grasped essential information, but dental practiti

Outcomes of minimal oral sedation in patients treated in a dental school setting: A retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Minimal sedation (Anxiolysis) is used in dentistry to reduce stress, manage anxiety, and improve patient comfort during treatment. The oral route of minimal sedation is safe and convenient, but there is limited literature assessing the efficacy of this mode of patient care. This paper aims to evaluate the outcomes of oral sedation use for patients treated in a dental school setting using a retrospective cohort analysis of electronic health record data. METHODS: A total of 6872 patient records were selected after screening through the selection criteria. Demographic and treatment

Monkeypox: what do dental professionals need to know?

Infection control is critical for the safe delivery of dental care. Infection control practices must be responsive to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and outbreaks, as was clearly seen during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. An emerging global outbreak of the monkeypox virus has again raised potential challenges for infection control in dentistry. Monkeypox is an infectious disease, characterised by a rash affecting the skin and soft tissues, including the oral cavity. Previously, cases were mostly seen following contact with infected animals in Central and West Africa, with lim
