Staged intrastromal delivery of riboflavin with UVA cross-linking in advanced bullous keratopathy: laboratory investigation and first clinical case.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of staged ultraviolet A (UVA) cross-linking following intrastromal 0.1% riboflavin administration in eyes with advanced corneal edema. METHODS: Ten eye bank corneas divided in two groups (n = 5) were placed on a pressurized artificial anterior chamber following Descemet's membrane stripping. Two consecutive corneal pockets (350- and 150-microm depth) were sequentially created using a femtosecond laser. Sequential intrastromal injections of 0.1% riboflavin (0.2 mL) followed by either UVA irradiation (15 mW/cm2) for 7 minutes or exposure to air were

Eye Donation: Awareness, Knowledge, Willingness, and Barriers among Paramedical and Allied Health Science Students at a Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital in South India.

BACKGROUND: Visual impairments have physical, emotional, social, and economical consequences and are a crucial element influencing one's quality of life. A total of 1.285 million people are estimated to be visually impaired worldwide of which 39 million are categorised as blind. These figures are startling, given that 80 percent of known vision impairments are either treatable or preventable. Corneal transplants appear to be our best hope for resolving this problem; however, a global shortage of available donors continues to dampen efforts addressing this issue. METHODS: This two-year cross-s

Recent developments in medical therapy of POAG with beta blocking agents.

Since 1987, an entirely computerized open study has been developed in Pr Sole's Ophthalmology Department: the CLERTORE project (Clermont-Tonus-Research). It is a data bank including all the ophthalmic data of hypertensive patients, whether treated or untreated. Every six months, the patients included in the CLERTORE project undergo a clinical ophthalmic examination as well as an automated visual field examination (OCTOPUS 500), an examination of the optic disc (ONHA) and fluorophotometry (FLUOROTRON MASTER). To date, 92 patients have been included in the project. One hundred and eighty-three e

In situ versus whole-globe harvesting of corneal tissue from remote donor sites: effects on initial tissue quality.

PURPOSE: There are 2 methods of corneal tissue procurement currently in widespread use: in situ extraction of the corneal button directly to preservation media and whole-globe enucleation of eyes with removal of the button to preservation media at a later time. This study evaluates the effects of these 2 procurement procedures on the initial quality of donor corneal tissue. METHODS: Slit-lamp examination results and endothelial cell counts were compared for a total of 468 donor corneas harvested at 2 remote locations: one where in situ procurement was practiced and the other that used whole-g

Evaluation of Sociomedical Factors on Corneal Donor Recovery Using Machine Learning.

PURPOSE: To evaluate co-morbid sociomedical conditions affecting corneal donor endothelial cell density and transplant suitability. METHOD(S): Corneal donor transplant information was collected from the CorneaGen eye bank between June 1, 2012 and June 30, 2016. A natural language processing algorithm was applied to generate co-morbid sociomedical conditions for each donor. Variables of importance were identified using four machine learning models (random forest, Glmnet, Earth, nnet), for the outcomes of transplant suitability and endothelial cell density. SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations)

Age-related changes in the kinetics of water transport in normal human lenses.

Magnetic resonance microscopy (MRM) has been used to study the kinetics of water transport in human eye lenses. Fresh lenses obtained from the Queensland Eye Bank were incubated at 34.5 degrees C in artificial aqueous humour (AAH) containing nutrients and metabolites similar to those that are present in vivo. MR images were acquired over approximately a 20 hr period following replacement of H(2)O based AAH with deuterium oxide (D(2)O) based AAH. NMR signal intensity from the lenses decreased with time corresponding to a decrease in concentration of H(2)O within the lenses. A statistically sign

Marine tardigrades of Princess Alice Bank (Azores, Northeast Atlantic) with a description of a new species of Quisarctus Fujimoto, 2015.

A new marine tardigrade, Quisarctus armatus sp. nov., found in samples from 151306 m depths at the Princess Alice Bank (PAB), south of the Azores archipelago, is described in this study. It is the second species in the genus and differs from its putative sister species Q. yasumurai by the shape of leg IV sensory organ, the presence of lipoid eyes, a partially folded cuticle of the digits and an elongated mouth cone. Quisarctus armatus sp. nov. shows sexual dimorphism with the length of primary clavae, the shape of leg IV sensory organ, and with differently shaped cirri E in females and males.

Inner ear inflammation and round window otosclerosis.

Recently, it has been suggested that otosclerosis represents the host's ongoing immunologic response to measles or other viral antigens. Documentation of past inflammation within the inner ear would serve as further evidence that this mechanism may be at play in the pathogenesis of the disease. Among the characteristic signs of prior inflammation in the inner ear is the presence of lamellar bone at the site of inflammation. This has been described in the temporal bone of a patient with immune-mediated deafness and with the temporal bones of experimental models of immune-mediated inner ear dise
