The trachoma and LGV organisms, the human pathogens of the species C. trachomatis, cause oculogenital infections and disease syndromes of the eye and genital tract. The incidence of the most prominent disease, endemic trachoma with eye-to-eye transmission, is decreasing all over the world. At the same time there is increasing recognition of high-frequency venereal infections with trachoma organisms and of the genital disease and occasional ocular disease that they cause. Laboratory techniques for diagnosis and investigation are improving, but work with these interesting intermediate agents rem

Bacillus cereus is ubiquitous in nature and thus occurs naturally in a wide range of raw materials and foodstuffs. B. cereus spores are resistant to desiccation and heat and able to survive dry storage and cooking. Vegetative cells produce several toxins which on ingestion in sufficient numbers can cause vomiting and/or diarrhoea depending on the toxins produced. Gastrointestinal disease is commonly associated with reheated or inadequately cooked foods. In addition to being a rare cause of several acute infections (e.g. pneumonia and septicaemia), B. cereus can also cause localized infection o

Contact lenses, when worn and cared for properly, are a safe and effective form of vision correction used by an estimated 45 million Americans. However, contact lens wearers are at risk for contact lens-related eye infections, especially when wearers do not practice proper contact lens wear and care habits. These infections, affecting the cornea and known as microbial keratitis (Figure), can lead to serious adverse health outcomes. Because contact lenses are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as medical devices, contact lens-related corneal infections should be reported to FDA

PURPOSE: To analyze the roles of acquired or congenital infections in cases of ocular toxoplasmosis, and to compare their clinical manifestations.
DESIGN: Retrospective, observational case series.
METHODS: We analyzed the charts of consecutive patients with a diagnosis of ocular toxoplasmosis. Data from the French program for the prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis were used to assess the origin of infection. The data included patients' serologic status prior to their ocular manifestations and patients' mothers' serologic status before, during, and/or after pregnancy. Infections were cate

Mycotic lacrimal canaliculitis is a rare eye disease. Overuse of antibiotics and steroids in the treatment of eye infections is a very serious risk factor. Initial diagnosis of the mycotic infection may be difficult, thus infection may lasts for months. Chronic conjunctivitis, itching, burning sensations, poor response to the treatment may suggest a suspicion of the mycosis. In our paper we report two cases of the mycotic lacrimal canaliculitis, diagnosis and treatment. We could not culture fungal colonies, but we have found fungal structures in direct microscopic detection during the examinat

The epidemiology of microbial keratitis has been investigated in several studies by analysis of organisms cultured from corneal scrapes. However, a comparison of the frequency of different organisms causing keratitis in different parts of the world is lacking. The authors present a review incorporating an analysis of data from studies worldwide. The data provide a comparison of the frequency of culture-positive organisms found in different parts of the world. Associations between a country's gross national income and types of causative organism are explored. The highest proportion of bacterial

Oculomycosis may be divided into the orbital infections of phycomycosis of Aspergillus and other species and the infections of the globe. The latter comprise endogenous, post-surgical or traumatic intra-ocular infections and direct infections of the cornea: these are the commonest form of oculomycosis. They are not easy to differentiate from other, more common causes of septic infection of the eye. The early recognition of fungal infections of the eye thus rests on maintaining an efficient service for all septic infections of the eye. Candida albicans and other dimorphic fungal infections are

The central nervous system (CNS) and the eye are involved in Human immunodeficiency virus related disease. Although, optic nerve is considered an extension of the CNS, it has not been systematically evaluated to determine if infections of brain can extend into the eye or vice versa. The brain and posterior compartment of eyeball retrieved at autopsy of patients succumbing to NeuroAIDS, were evaluated with Hematoxylin & Eosin, special stains and immunohistochemistry for infective pathogens. Multiplex PCR was performed in vitreous, CSF and serum for simultaneous detection of bacterial, viral, an

A follow up study three years after exposure to methyl isocyanate in 93% of exposed survivors and "control" residents in 10 Bhopali communities showed an excess of eye irritation, eyelid infection, cataract, and a decrease in visual acuity among the exposed people. Breathlessness was twice as common in the heavily exposed clusters as those with lower exposure, a trend that could not be explained by different age or smoking patterns (OR 2.05, 95% CI 1.36-3.08). Case referent analysis of outpatient attendances at Bhopal Eye Hospital, considering patients with severe refractive errors and astigma

A total of 102 cases of clinically diagnosed cases of acute conjunctivitis were included in the present study. The sample was collected from the inflamed conjunctiva and was subjected to conventional bacterial and fungal cultural studies. The allergic element was found out by studying the smear after Giemsa staining and demonstrating increased number of eosinophils. The data revealed that 32 samples had an evidence of bacterial infection, 14 showed isolation of fungi and one displayed an allergic etiology. Thirty cases showed presence of mixed infection in different combinations while 25 sampl

This review looks at the critical role of vitamin D in improving barrier function, production of antimicrobial peptides including cathelicidin and some defensins, and immune modulation. The function of vitamin D in the innate immune system and in the epithelial cells of the oral cavity, lung, gastrointestinal system, genito-urinary system, skin and surface of the eye is discussed. Clinical conditions are reviewed where vitamin D may play a role in the prevention of infections or where it may be used as primary or adjuvant treatment for viral, bacterial and fungal infections. Several conditions

Corneal transplantation is an exceedingly common and pivotal procedure in the management of corneal disease. The increasing demand for corneal transplantation underscores the importance of current guidelines and methodologies for donor tissue screening and collection. A recent FDA notice of inspectional focus on United States eye banks brought concerns about donor sepsis being a source for recipient infections and improper eye bank screening practices. However, there is evidence to suggest that septic donors do not increase the risk of transmission of infections associated with corneal grafts.

Amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba are ubiquitous protists that have been isolated from many sources such as soils, water and the air. They are responsible for infections including fatal encephalitis and a severe keratitis in humans. To date, there is no satisfactorily effective therapeutic agent against this pathogen and the infections it causes are exacerbated by the existence of a resistant cyst stage produced by this amoeba. As dry eye syndrome is a risk factor for Acanthamoeba keratitis, we aimed to evaluate the anti-Acanthamoeba activity of a variety of proprietary eye drops intended to t

The most prevalent conditions among ocular surgery and COVID-19 patients are fungal eye infections, which may cause inflammation and dry eye, and may cause ocular morbidity. Amphotericin-B eye drops are commonly used in the treatment of ocular fungal infections. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and is used for the treatment of dry eye, conjunctivitis, and ocular inflammation. However, poor aqueous stability and excessive nasolacrimal duct draining impede these agens' efficiency. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Amphoterici

BACKGROUND: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare primary immunodeficiency disease caused by genetic mutations. Clinical manifestations of CGD include recurrent infections, granuloma formation, and noninfectious inflammatory responses in multiple organs, while ocular involvement is uncommon. Chorioretinal lesions in cases of CGD are mostly inactive and tend not to affect vision, while active chorioretinal lesions and fundus hemorrhage are rare.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 23-month-old male child with CYBB mutation was admitted to hospital due to fever and decreased visual acuity. He had poor
