Visual memory.

Visual memory allows us to behave adaptively in the world we live. In this tutorial we will review the types of visual memory storage that have been identified. These storage processes begin the instant a visual stimulus appears and continue through to remembering objects and scenes that were encountered decades ago. The different types of memory storage have different properties of capacity and resolution. We will discuss how our memories allow us to link new information to information that we have acquired across our life spans. We will also discuss how this linking between new information a

Whole-object effects in visual word processing: Parallels with and differences from face recognition.

Visual words and faces differ in their structural properties, but both are objects of high expertise. Holistic processing is said to characterize expert face recognition, but the extent to which whole-word processes contribute to word recognition is unclear, particularly as word recognition is thought to proceed by a component-based process. We review the evidence for experimental effects in word recognition that parallel those used to support holistic face processing, namely inversion effects, the part-whole task, and composite effects, as well as the status of whole-word processing in pure a

Facial Asymmetry-Based Age Group Estimation: Role in Recognizing Age-Separated Face Images.

Face recognition aims to establish the identity of a person based on facial characteristics. On the other hand, age group estimation is the automatic calculation of an individual's age range based on facial features. Recognizing age-separated face images is still a challenging research problem due to complex aging processes involving different types of facial tissues, skin, fat, muscles, and bones. Certain holistic and local facial features are used to recognize age-separated face images. However, most of the existing methods recognize face images without incorporating the knowledge learned fr

The Emergence of Topography and Hemispheric Lateralization in High-Level Vision.

This article reviews research that examines the topographic organization of the human brain, the role of development, breakdown and plasticity, and the constraints that give rise to the replicable organization across individuals and cultures. To address these questions, we evaluate the topographic arrangement of regions in ventral temporal cortex (VTC) that respond strongly to the viewing of faces and words, and demonstrate that both categories drive responses in both hemispheres albeit to a greater degree in the right hemisphere for faces and left hemisphere for words. We hypothesize that thi

Null effect of anodal and cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on own- and other-race face recognition.

Successful face recognition is important for social interactions and public security. Although some preliminary evidence suggests that anodal and cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) might modulate own- and other-race face identification, respectively, the findings are largely inconsistent. Hence, we examined the effect of both anodal and cathodal tDCS on the recognition of own- and other-race faces. Ninety participants first completed own- and other-race Cambridge Face Memory Test (CFMT) as baseline measurements. Next, they received either anodal tDCS, cathodal tDCS or sham

Interdependency in lateralization of written word and face processing in right-handed individuals.

It has been suggested that the right hemisphere lateralization typically observed for face processing may depend on lateralization of written word processing to the left hemisphere; a pattern referred to as the causal complementary principle of lateralization. According to a strong version of this principle, a correlation should be found between the degree of left and right hemisphere lateralization for word and face processing respectively. This has been observed in two studies, but only for left-handed individuals. The present study tested whether a similar lateralization pattern could be fo

Face recognition in developmental dyslexia: evidence for dissociation between faces and words.

Developmental dyslexia is primarily a reading disorder, but recent studies have indicated that face processing problems may also be present. Using a case-series approach, we tested face recognition and visual word recognition in 24 high school students diagnosed with developmental dyslexia. Contrary to previous findings, no face recognition problems were found on the group-level. Rather, a significant classical dissociation with impaired word reading and normal face recognition was demonstrated on a group-level and for six individuals with developmental dyslexia. However, four individuals with

Behavioural and neurocognitive responses to sad facial affect are attenuated in patients with mania.

BACKGROUND: The processing of facial emotion involves a distributed network of limbic and paralimbic brain structures. Many of these regions are also implicated in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. Behavioural data indicate that depressed subjects show a state-related positive recognition bias for faces displaying negative emotions. There are sparse data to suggest there may be an analogous, state-related negative recognition bias for negative emotions in mania. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the behavioural and neurocognitive correlates of happy and s

Children with facial differences experience deficits in emotion skills.

Children with facial differences, such as repaired cleft lip and palate (CLP), may present with reduced capacity for sensorimotor simulation, particularly in the form of facial mimicry. This study examined whether facial mimicry, emotion recognition, and empathy skills are reduced in children with CLP when compared with sex/age-matched controls. A case-control design was utilized. Forty-five children between the ages of 8 and 12 with CLP, and 45 age/sex-matched controls were recruited. Participants completed a facial mimicry task, and facial movements were tracked and quantified using OpenFace

Neural evidence of face processing in social anxiety disorder: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

Numerous previous studies have used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine facial processing deficits in individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, researchers still need to determine whether the deficits are general or specific and what the dominant factors are behind different cognitive stages. Meta-analysis was performed to quantitatively identify face processing deficits in individuals with SAD. Ninety-seven results in 27 publications involving 1032 subjects were calculated using Hedges' g. The results suggest that the face itself elicits enlarged P1 amplitudes, threat-re

Functional brain asymmetry for emotions: psychological stress-induced reversed hemispheric asymmetry in emotional face perception.

Empirical evidence has demonstrated functional (mostly right-biased) brain asymmetry for emotion perception, whereas recent studies indicate that acute stress may modulate left and/or right hemisphere activation. However, it is still unknown whether emotion perception can be influenced by stress-induced hemispheric activation since behavioral studies report inconsistent or even contradictory results. We sought to reevaluate this gap. Eighty-eight healthy Caucasian university students participated in the study. In half of the randomly selected participants, acute psychological stress was induce

Emotional processing in Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia: evidence for response bias deficits in PD.

Deficits in facial emotion recognition in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients has been well documented. Nevertheless, it is still not clear whether facial emotion recognition deficits are secondary to other cognitive impairments. The aim of this study was to answer the question of whether deficits in facial emotion recognition in PD result from impaired sensory processes, or from impaired decision processes. To address this question, we tested the ability to recognize a mixture of basic and complex emotions in 38 non-demented PD patients and 38 healthy controls matched on demographic characteris

A computerized facial approximation method for Homo sapiens based on facial soft tissue thickness depths and geometric morphometrics.

Facial approximation (FA) provides a promising means of generating the possible facial appearance of a deceased person. It facilitates exploration of the evolutionary forces driving anatomical changes in ancestral humans and can capture public attention. Despite the recent progress made toward improving the performance of FA methods, a limited understanding of detailed quantitative craniofacial relationships between facial bone and soft tissue morphology may hinder their accuracy, and hence subjective experience and artistic interpretation are required. In this study, we explored craniofacial

A computational account of the mechanisms underlying face perception biases in depression.

Here, we take a computational approach to understand the mechanisms underlying face perception biases in depression. Thirty participants diagnosed with major depressive disorder and 30 healthy control participants took part in three studies involving recognition of identity and emotion in faces. We used signal detection theory to determine whether any perceptual biases exist in depression aside from decisional biases. We found lower sensitivity to happiness in general, and lower sensitivity to both happiness and sadness with ambiguous stimuli. Our use of highly-controlled face stimuli ensures

Emotion recognition largely unaffected by combined oral contraceptive transitions or their androgenicity.

Oral contraceptive (OC) intake has been linked to reduced emotion recognition, particularly for negative emotions, though cross-sectional findings are inconclusive. Differences in the androgenicity of OC formulations may partly explain these inconsistencies. This study examined the association of OC initiation or discontinuation on facial emotion recognition in women. A total of 133 healthy young women completed the Vienna Emotion Recognition Test (VERT-K), which measures accuracy and response time of recognition of basic emotional expressions. Most participants (n = 115) completed the test tw

The view tolerance of human identity recognition depends on horizontal face information.

This study investigates which visual information enables humans to recognize facial identity across different viewpoints, a key unresolved question in vision science. Participants completed an identity recognition task using faces rotated across a range of yaw angles and filtered to retain specific orientation ranges of visual information. Regardless of viewpoint, human performance consistently relied on horizontal facial information. To understand why, we used model observers to assess the identity information physically available in the images. A view-selective model, which matched identitie

Effects of face repetition on ventral visual stream connectivity using dynamic causal modelling of fMRI data.

Stimulus repetition normally causes reduced neural activity in brain regions that process that stimulus. Some theories claim that this "repetition suppression" reflects local mechanisms such as neuronal fatigue or sharpening within a region, whereas other theories claim that it results from changed connectivity between regions, following changes in synchrony or top-down predictions. In this study, we applied dynamic causal modeling (DCM) on a public fMRI dataset involving repeated presentations of faces and scrambled faces to test whether repetition affected local (self-connections) and/or bet
