Genetic diversity of swine influenza viruses in Thai swine farms, 2011-2014.

The pig is known as a "mixing vessel" for influenza A viruses. The co-circulation of multiple influenza A subtypes in pig populations can lead to novel reassortant strains. For this study, swine influenza surveillance was conducted from September 2011 to February 2014 on 46 swine farms in Thailand. In total, 78 swine influenza viruses were isolated from 2,821 nasal swabs, and 12 were selected for characterization by whole genome sequencing. Our results showed that the co-circulation of swine influenza subtypes H1N1, H3N2, and H1N2 in Thai swine farms was observable throughout the 3 years of su…

Lameness and hock injuries improve on farms participating in an assessment program.

Lameness and hock injuries are recognized welfare and production problems in the dairy industry. The objective of this study was to describe changes in the prevalence of these ailments in 15 freestall herds in the Northeastern United States that participated in an on-farm assessment program. Prevalence was assessed in a high-producing pen in each herd. A confidential report was delivered to each of the farms showing prevalence in relation to other herds assessed within the same region. The average (±SD) period between visits was 11.5 ± 4.4 months (range, 8-25 months). The prevalence of lamenes…

Animal production systems of small farms in the Kaski district of Nepal.

The aim of this study was to describe animal production on small farms in the Kaski district of Nepal, with the goal of identifying areas where animal health and productivity could be improved. Eighty-five randomly selected farms from four different Village Development Committees were visited. Farmers were interviewed and premises and animals visually inspected on all farms. Feed samples were collected from a subset of farms. The most commonly kept species were water buffalo (used for milk and meat), cattle (used for milk and labor), and goats (used for meat). Average milk production levels we…

Molecular detection of norovirus in sheep and pigs in New Zealand farms.

Human norovirus (NoV) is reportedly the major cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide and is commonly associated with water- and food-borne transmission via the faecal-oral route. Aside from humans, norovirus has been detected in pigs, cattle and mice. The close relatedness of some human and animal noroviruses has raised concerns about potential zoonotic transmission. Our laboratory recently reported the development of a multiplex real-time RT-PCR for the detection and genotyping of norovirus of genogroups I-III. Here we report a study of 56 faecal specimens from pigs and sh

[Antibodies to certain infections on large goat farms in the Czech Republic].

On five newly established large goat farms the incidence of antibodies to some chronic and latent infections (arthritis and encephalitis, Q-fever, caseous lymphadenitis and toxoplazmosis) was investigated in the first six months of the year 1994. Agar-gel immunodiffusion did not reveal any antibodies to arthritis and encephalitis of goats (CAE). Complement fixation test did not demonstrate any antibodies to Q-fever. Neither agar-gel immunodiffusion nor neutralization test confirmed any antibodies to caseous lymphadentitis. Complement fixation test (titer 1:8 and more) revealed antibodies to to…

A longitudinal cohort study on the effects of reducing farm-level antimicrobial use on Escherichia coli antimicrobial resistance on dairy farms in Québec, Canada.

The effects of interventions that restrict antimicrobial use (AMU) in food production animals on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remain unclear. We have already established a portrait of AMU and AMR on dairy farms in Québec before a regulation, implemented in 2019, that restricts the use of category I antimicrobials in food production animals. In the current study, involving 84 dairy farms in Québec, we assessed the effects of farm-level changes in AMU on farm-level AMR. Using an observational cohort study design, we gathered AMU data through veterinary invoicing software 2 years before and 2 y…

Does a Traceability System Help to Regulate Pig Farm Households' Veterinary Drug Use Behavior? Evidence from Pig Farms in China.

In China, there is a renewed interest in traceability systems as an efficient tool to guarantee pork safety. One of the pathways through which a traceability system can benefit consumers is by easing information asymmetry. However, past literature on the traceability system in China pays more attention to theoretical analysis and less to empirical analysis. Using a large-scale survey of pig farms in China, we investigate the effects influencing farmers' participation in the traceability system. Findings show that a traceability system can influence the safety of pork indirectly through its imp…

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus ST398 in veal calf farming: human MRSA carriage related with animal antimicrobial usage and farm hygiene.

INTRODUCTION: Recently a specific MRSA sequence type, ST398, emerged in food production animals and farmers. Risk factors for carrying MRSA ST398 in both animals and humans have not been fully evaluated. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated factors associated with MRSA colonization in veal calves and humans working and living on these farms. METHODS: A sample of 102 veal calf farms were randomly selected and visited from March 2007-February 2008. Participating farmers were asked to fill in a questionnaire (n = 390) to identify potential risk factors. A nasal swab was taken from each…

Evolution of SARS-CoV-2 caused infection in farmed minks: continuous surveillance of an 11-month outbreak at the largest Latvian mink farm.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), responsible for the Coronavirus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, can productively infect a variety of animal hosts. The evidence suggests that both wild and farmed animal populations supporting continuous transmission present us with novel concerning genotypes of SARS-CoV-2. This is especially worrisome within large and dense populations of farmed animals, such as minks, for which spillbacks of 'mink genotypes' to the human population have been recorded on numerous occasions. In this study, we present the results of continuous c

Farm management and breeding-related animal movement associated with African swine fever risk in smallholder pig farms in West Timor, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious transboundary animal disease that has led to substantial economic losses in smallholder pig production systems around the world. Some of the possible explanations for why ASF transmission still occurs in Indonesia, particularly West Timor, are traditional husbandry practices and poor biosecurity implementations. This study aimed to identify potential pig farm-level risk factors for ASF in smallholder farming systems of West Timor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 300 smallholder pig farms. Structured…

Association between farm-level antimicrobial usage and antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli isolates from healthy swine in ten farms in Japan.

We examined the antimicrobial resistance of 1,493 Escherichia coli isolates from 440 swine fecal samples (211 and 229 samples were obtained from the sow and fattening groups, respectively) on ten farms and analyzed the association between the antimicrobial resistance rate and the annual antimicrobial usage at the farm level adjusted by the daily defined dose in Japan. For most antimicrobial agents, the rate of resistance was greater on farms with higher levels of antimicrobial use, suggesting that the amount of the corresponding antimicrobial class used at the farm level may have affected the …

Genomic Insights of Antibiotic-Resistant Escherichia coli Isolated from Intensive Pig Farming in South Africa Using 'Farm-to-Fork' Approach.

Background/Objectives: Intensive pig farming is a critical component of food security and economic activity in South Africa; however, it also presents a risk of amplifying antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study provides genomic insights into antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) circulating across the pork production chain, using a 'farm-to-fork' approach. Methods: A total of 417 samples were collected from various points along the production continuum, including the farm (n = 144), transport (n = 60), and abattoir (n = 213). E. coli isolates were identified using the Colilert-18

Pilot study assessing the possible benefits of a higher level of implementation of biosecurity measures on farm productivity and health status in Belgian cattle farms.

Over the last few years, the interest of decision-makers and control agencies in biosecurity (BS), aiming at preventing and controlling the introduction and spread of infectious diseases, has considerably increased. Nevertheless, previous studies highlighted a low implementation level of biosecurity measures (BSM), especially in cattle farms; different reasons were identified such as perceived costs, utility, importance, increased workload and lack of knowledge. In order to convince cattle farmers to adopt BSM, it is necessary to gather more information and evidence on their cost-effectiveness…

Farm characteristics and calf management practices on dairy farms with and without diarrhea: a case-control study to investigate risk factors for calf diarrhea.

Calf diarrhea is one of the most important problems in calf rearing on dairy farms worldwide. Besides pathogens, several noninfectious management factors, especially management around birth, colostrum management, calf housing, feeding, and hygiene are important in the pathogenesis of diarrhea. To date, few data are available concerning calf rearing management on small and medium-sized dairy farms that are typical for Austria and the alpine region. Consequently, the objectives of this case-control study were to evaluate routine calf management practices on Austrian dairy farms and to examine di…

Pathogen detection and microbial community characterization in clinically symptomatic pigs from commercial farms.

Effective swine disease control requires continuous monitoring of major pathogens and a comprehensive understanding of microbial community dynamics under disease conditions. Here, we collected lung, oral fluid, and fecal samples from clinically symptomatic pigs on commercial farms in South Korea. Molecular diagnostics targeting major respiratory and enteric pathogens were performed to assess infection status, alongside 16S rRNA gene sequencing to simultaneously characterize respiratory and enteric microbiota. Most respiratory pathogens were detected at higher rates in oral fluid than in lung s…
