This study examined child behavior during exposure tasks and characteristics of the exposure tasks as related to outcomes when treating anxious youth. Participants (aged 7-13) were 87 anxiety-disordered children (37 girls; 50 boys) and their parents (84 mothers; 70 fathers) who completed a 16-session cognitive-behavioral therapy. Videotapes of exposure-based sessions were coded for (a) child use of safety-seeking behavior (SSB) and (b) coping behavior (CB) during exposure, (c) characteristics of the exposure tasks, and (d) child anxiety during exposure. Results indicated that child use of SSB,

The purpose of this study was to assess mental health in parents of patients with the childhood cerebral form of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (CCALD) and to investigate factors relating to psychological problems in order to improve clinical management and quality of life. Sixteen fathers and 21 mothers of patients with CCALD completed a battery of psychological examinations including the Beck Depression Inventory second edition (BDI-II), the General Health Questionnaire 60 (GHQ60), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Three fathers and 11 mothers showed high scores on the BDI-II, sug

OBJECTIVE: The study explores the associations among parental depressive symptoms, child symptoms of psychopathology, emotion socialization (ES), and parenting-specific emotion regulation (ER) using a novel measure, the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale (REPS).
BACKGROUND: There is a notable correlation between parental depressive symptoms and symptoms of psychopathology in children. Empirical studies have also observed a correlation in the intergenerational patterns of ER, as well as their relations to ES. Investigating these relations in nonclinical samples is vital for understanding t

BACKGROUND: Norms-shifting interventions show promise in addressing violence against children (VAC), yet few culturally grounded quantitative measures of VAC-related norms exist, limiting norms change research and intervention evaluation. We aimed to document violent child discipline behaviors and norms in Uganda and develop psychometrically validated descriptive and injunctive norms measures.
METHODS: Using a mixed-methods design, we interviewed young fathers and community members (n = 1044) in six regions of Uganda to identify VAC-related norms and inform survey item development. Items were

Based on the observation of a child born by IAD, suffering of depression and presenting a school phobia, the author discusses the feeling of impotency experienced by the legal father. In another case, the grand-father-to-be is ready to donate his sperm so as to avoid issues on genetics: it is doubtful that such birth conditions would permit a healty organization of fatherhood. Included in the article are references on the literature concerning psychopathology of children born by IAD.

The frequency of hepatosplenomegaly in endemic areas is not proportional to the fecal ova count. This may be explained by epidemiological genetic. The occurrence of two or more cases of schistosomal hepatosplenomegaly in nuclear family is much higher than expected. The concentration is higher among siblings than it is among mothers and children of father and children. It is not significant between father and mother. If the mother, instead of the father, has hepatosplenic schistosomiasis the relative risk for the child to acquire hepatosplenomegaly is at least five times (the maternal affect).

OBJECTIVES: Although rumination can have a negative influence on the family environment and the quality of parent-child interactions, there is little research on the role of parental rumination in predicting adverse child outcomes over time. This longitudinal study examined whether mothers' and fathers' brooding rumination would each uniquely predict emotional symptoms in preschool children.
METHODS: The initial sample consisted of 160 families (including 50 mothers with past depression, 33 fathers with past depression, and 7 fathers with current depression according to the Structural Clinica

The present report concerns a two-generation family of nine individuals in which the father and three of the six living children all had: (1) a mixed hearing loss with a Mondini type cochlear malformation and stapes fixation; (2) cup-shaped, anteverted pinnae with bilateral prehelical pits: (3) bilateral branchial cleft fistulas; and (4) bilateral renal dysplasia and anomalies of the collecting system. The father and one affected son also had aplasia of the lacrimal ducts. A fourth child who died at 5 months of age was reported to have branchial cleft fistulas and bilateral polycystic kidneys

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between partner psychological abuse and child maltreatment perpetration.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined a population-based sample of mothers with children aged 0-17 years in North and South Carolina (n=1,149). Mothers were asked about the occurrence of potentially neglectful or abusive behaviors toward their children by either themselves or their husband/partner in the past year. Partner psychological abuse was categorized as no psychological abuse (reference), husband perpetrates, wife perpetrates, or both perpetrate. Outcome measu

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric disorder that impacts both the adolescents themselves and their parents. Parenting stress is associated with impaired mental health of parents and poorer treatment outcomes for their children. Understanding the course of parenting stress during inpatient treatment and differences between mothers and fathers is important to improve AN treatment and (long term) outcome.
METHOD: Within a longitudinal controlled design, parents of adolescents with AN are compared to healthy children (HC) at three time points during and after their daughters

Findings are reported from Phase 2 of a longitudinal study of family functioning in heterosexual-couple families with 5 year olds conceived using identity-release egg donation. Seventy-two egg donation families were compared to 50 in vitro fertilization (IVF) families (ethnicity: 93% White British) using standardized observational, interview, and questionnaire measures. There were no differences between family types in the quality of mother-child or father-child interaction, apart from lower structuring by fathers in egg donation families. Egg donation mothers and fathers reported higher level

Prior studies have shown that parent and adolescent cortisol are associated across days and that this covariation may be adolescent-driven. This study extends this literature by (a) testing whether parents' cognitive interference (i.e., distracting and ruminative thoughts potentially due to worry) mediates the linkages between adolescent and next-day parent cortisol and (b) whether these linkages were moderated by parent gender or warmth. Daily diary data, including bedtime cortisol, were collected on two samples of employees and their adolescent-aged children (N = 318 dyads, Myouth age = 13.

OBJECTIVE: Achieving condition-related autonomy is an important developmental milestone for youth with spina bifida (SB). However, the transfer of condition-related responsibility to these youth can be delayed due to parent factors. This study aimed to investigate two potential pathways by which maternal factors may be associated with condition-related responsibility among youth with SB: (a) Maternal adjustment → perception of child vulnerability (PPCV) → youth condition-related responsibility; and (b) Maternal PPCV → overprotection → youth condition-related responsibility.

BACKGROUND: Extant models of the association between harsh parenting and social anxiety among adolescents are mostly partial mediation models, leaving much of the relationship unaccounted for.
OBJECTIVE: The current study intends to test a two-mediator model in which adolescents' cognitive reactivity and emotional dysregulation were assumed to mediate the potential impact of harsh parenting on their social anxiety.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTINGS: A sample of 726 adolescent students with their parents was recruited from two middle schools located in a provincial city of Northern China.

Our objective was to examine the relationship between the timing of parental US immigration and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) without early learning delay (ELD), ASD with ELD, and ELD alone among US-born children. We analyzed data from a multi-site case-control study that recruited children aged 2-5 years with ASD or non-ASD developmental disorders and same-age population controls. Parental demographics were collected from caregivers at study enrollment. Mullen Scales of Early Learning ≤ 70 was used to define ELD. Among children with a non-US-born parent (N = 1048), we used multinomial logist
