Postpartum depression is a family affair: addressing the impact on mothers, fathers, and children.

The purpose of this paper is to present research on the effects of postpartum depression (PPD) on mothers, fathers, and children that point to a re-conceptualization of PPD as a mental health condition that affects the whole family. As such, the objectives of this paper are to discuss: (1) the incidence and effects of PPD on mothers and fathers; (2) common predictors of PPD in mothers and fathers, and (3) the effects of PPD on parenting and parent-child relationships, and (4) the effects of PPD on children's health, and their cognitive and social-emotional development. Finally, the implication…

Perinatal Period: Psychological Functioning of Fathers During the First 1000 days of Child's Life.

The first 1,000 days of life represent a critical phase for child development and may have a significant impact on parents' psychological functioning. While numerous studies have focused on mothers, limited data are currently available regarding the potential psychological changes experienced by fathers during this perinatal period. This study aimed to explore the fathers' mental health during the perinatal period. A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted among 76 French-speaking fathers in Belgium. Participants were divided into two groups: fathers in the perinatal period (n = 51) an…

Fathers' attitudes toward breastfeeding, their participation, and influence: a cross-sectional study in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Although breastfeeding is strongly recommended for optimal maternal and infant health, global rates remain suboptimal. Fathers play an important role in supporting breastfeeding through their attitudes and participation. However, evidence on how fathers' attitudes, participation, and influence affect breastfeeding practices and maternal decision-making regarding breastfeeding continuation and cessation is limited. Understanding these relationships can inform family centered interventions and strategies to improve breastfeeding outcomes, highlighting the practical significance of th…

Smiling in time: the interactive development of infant smiling with mothers, fathers and strangers.

A developmental examination of the temporal dynamics of infant smiling during early social interaction is lacking. We ask how infants and adults influence each other's expressions of positive affect by examining the timing of transitions among dyadic states defined by the presence and absence of each partner's smiles. Fifty-eight infants interacted with their mothers, fathers and a stranger at 4 and 8 months. A survival analysis of the time course of infant (and adult partner) smiles and non-smiles indicated that infants initiated smiles and reciprocated smiles at lower rates than their adult …

Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder after perinatal loss in fathers: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that perinatal loss can cause profound psychological consequences in parents. METHODS: A systematic literature search (from inception to December 2021), using the PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases to articles assessing depressive or PTS symptoms, was conducted following …

A Chip Off the Old Block: The Impact of Fathers on Sexual Offending Behavior.

While parenting factors are commonly included as early risk markers for sexual aggression, data specific to paternal impacts on sexual offending are scattered. This review provides a thorough and systematic account of what is known regarding the fathers of sexual offenders. Thirty-four studies were categorized according to four distinct research questions, each addressing theoretical mechanisms by which fathers may influence the violent sexual behavior of their sons. The results suggest that the strongest impacts occur when sons are witness to their fathers engaging in acts of sexual abuse or …

A Qualitative Exploration of Reentry Service Needs: The Case of Fathers Returning From Prison.

The challenge of community and family reentry after a parent's release from prison remains an under-addressed area of collateral damage stemming from high rates of U.S. incarceration. Many fathers released from prison return to living with family, and later attribute family connections and parent-child contact as key factors in their post-release success. However, reentry planning is hampered by a dearth of research on family-focused reentry services, and consequently, often omits attention to resuming family and parenting roles. To address this gap, we conducted 38 semi-structured interviews …

Testing the fathers: carrying out HIV and STI tests on partners of pregnant women.

OBJECTIVES: Opt out antenatal HIV testing has significantly reduced mother to child transmission of HIV, but seroconversion during pregnancy from undiagnosed HIV positive male partners remains a risk. The authors report on a pilot initiative for sexual health and HIV screening for male partners of women attending antenatal ultrasound examination at Homerton Hospital, London. METHODS: Men attending with their female partners for routine ultrasound examination between 1 August 2010 and 31 January 2011 were offered on-site serology for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C and urine testing

Maternal incest as moral panic: envisioning futures without fathers in the South African lowveld.

During 2008, rumours about revolting incestuous encounters between sons and their mothers circulated in the Bushbuckridge municipality of th … de-civilisation. Through the alleged act of incest, sons who engage in crime usurp the authority of fathers who once produced value in strategic industries and mines. As such the rumours envision a dystopia marked by the 'death of the father' and chaotic disorder without morality and law.

Frequency of XY sperm increases with age in fathers of boys with Klinefelter syndrome.

With increasing availability of drugs for impotence and advanced reproductive technologies for the treatment of subfertility, more men are fathering children at advanced ages. We conducted a study of the chromosomal content of sperm of healthy men aged 24-57 years to (a) determine whether father's age was associated with increasing frequencies of aneuploid sperm including XY, disomy X, disomy Y, disomy 21, and sperm diploidy, and (b) examine the association between the frequencies of disomy 21 and sex-chromosomal aneuploidies. The study group consisted of 38 fathers of boys with Klinefelter sy…

The gender gap in the economic well-being of nonresident fathers and custodial mothers.

Using a unique sample of couples with children, we estimate the gender gap in economic well-being after marital separation, something that previous studies of individuals who divorce have not been able to do. The income-to-needs levels of formerly married mothers are only 56% those of their former husbands. The postseparation gender gap is reduced if the wife was employed full-time and was an above-average earner before marital disruption. The gap is also relatively small among the least economically independent wives, those who were not employed before separation. For the latter group, the hu
