Testing carer skill training programs in Spanish carers of patients with eating disorders.

Bacterial leaf blight (BLB) is a major threat to global rice production, leading to yield losses of up to 40% despite extensive disease management practices. The persistence of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) necessitates an eco-friendly and effective alternative to synthetic pesticides. This study investigates the bio-control potential of various extracts and essential oils (EO) extracted via hydro-distillation from different plant sources (Ocimum tenuiflorum , Azadirachta indica , Mentha spicata , Trachyspermum ammi, and Garcinia mangostana). Among the tested samples, Trachyspermum ammi

Flexible feeding obturator for early intervention in infants with Pierre Robin sequence.

Pierre Robin sequence presents with distinct features of retrognathia and glossoptosis with or without cleft palate, which results in potentially serious, life-threatening respiratory obstruction and feeding complications. A multidisciplinary approach is required to manage such complex features. This article describes a novel technique for managing Pierre Robin sequence using a flexible feeding obturator. This custom-made intraoral appliance overcomes numerous problems associated with the available feeding obturators and helps infants and parents cope with a variety of difficulties.

Comparison of wound dehiscence and parent's satisfaction between spoon/syringe feeding and breast/bottle feeding in patients with cleft lip repair.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and cleft palate are the most common craniofacial anomalies affecting approximately 2.49 of every 1,000 children born in North-east of Thailand. Srinagarind Hospital has 100-150 cases of cleft lip each year. Children with cleft lip and palate need surgical procedures as soon as possible. After lip repair the normal recommendation is not using bottle or breast feeding for 2 weeks to avoid tension at the sutured area during sucking and possible cause of wound dehiscence. So this is quite complicated for the parents, and patients feel frustrated, cry, and move their head aro

The validity and 4-year test-retest reliability of the Brazilian version of the Eating Attitudes Test-26.

In a cross-sectional study conducted four years ago to assess the validity of the Brazilian version of the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26) for the identification of abnormal eating behaviors in a population of young females in Southern Brazil, 56 women presented abnormal eating behavior as indicated by the EAT-26 and the Edinburgh Bulimic Investigation Test. They were each matched for age and neighborhood to two normal controls (N = 112) and were re-assessed four years later with the two screening questionnaires plus the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). The EAT results we

Clinical efficacy of enteral nutrition feeding modalities in critically ill patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: In intensive care units (ICUs), both continuous and intermittent feeding are commonly used for early enteral nutrition (EN). However, whether continuous feeding is a preferable feeding modality compared to intermittent feeding remains unclear. Therefore, this meta-analysis assessed the clinical efficacy of both EN feeding modalities in critically ill patients. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from their inception dates to December 29, 2022. The search did not involve language restrictions (PROSPERO CRD42022371756). The Effects of Non-Nutritive Sucking and Pre-Feeding Oral Stimulation on Time to Achieve Independent Oral Feeding for Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: The survival rates of preterm infants has increased over the last years, but oral feeding difficulties are the most common problems encountered by them. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at comparing the effects of non-nutritive sucking (NNS) and pre-feeding oral stimulation on feeding skills, length of hospital stay and weight gain of 26-32 weeks gestational age preterm infants in NICU, to determine the more effective intervention. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-two preterm infants were assigned randomly into three groups. One intervention group received pre-feeding oral stimulation pr

The factors associated with successful early enteral feeding in gastroschisis.

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis is the most common congenital abdominal wall defect. Due to the exposure of midgut to amniotic fluid, the recovery of bowel function is often delayed. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with the successful early enteral feeding in gastroschisis and to develop further guidelines of treatment. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of gastroschisis babies from January 2006 to December 2015 was done. Exclusion criteria were incomplete data and death. Successful early enteral feeding was defined when full feeding was achieved within 21 days of life. RESU

Does feeding tube placement predict for long-term swallowing disability after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer?

PURPOSE: To evaluate feeding tube use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine hundred thirty-four patients were treated with radiotherapy (RT). RESULTS: Feeding tubes were placed in 235 patients (25%): 212 patients (22.5%) for acute toxicity, 18 patients (2%) for late effects, and 5 patients (0.5%) for both. Median duration of tube dependence for acute toxicity was 3.8 months. Multivariate analysis revealed that feeding tube placement for acute toxicity was increased with higher RT dose (p <.0001), adjuvant chemotherapy (p =.0002), advanced age (p =.0002), and the presence of neck disease (p =.0045). Early "sham" feeding of neonates promotes oral feeding after delayed primary repair of major congenital esophageal anomalies.

BACKGROUND: To promote the appropriate and early development of the suck and swallow mechanism, we instituted a "sham" feeding protocol in infants undergoing delayed primary repair of an esophageal atresia anomaly. METHODS: Four patients who were born with esophageal atresia required delayed repair and were sham fed before surgical correction. Each infant started with a small volume of oral feeds by using a bottle/nipple with a continuous Replogle suction system placed nasally into the esophageal pouch. They were carefully monitored. The volume of feeds was slowly increased as tolerated. RES

Home tube feeding for long-term nutritional support.

Twenty-three adult patients with protein-calorie malnutrition were referred for outpatient tube feeding. Initial nutritional support with hypercaloric supplemented diets did not prevent further catabolism and weight loss, as the mean protein intake was 35.2 g/24 hr and the mean calorie intake was 844 cal/24 hr. Outpatient tube feeding was then initiated in deliver a mean of 78.5 g protein/24 hr and 2248 cal/24 hr. Patients on tube feeding demonstrated an increase of serum albumin and total body weight compared to diet therapy alone. The patient and family members were instructed in the techniq

Early feeding after laparoscopic pyloromyotomy: the pros and cons.

BACKGROUND: Early feeding after pyloromyotomy for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) has been advocated because this would lead to earlier discharge. However, some authors remain reluctant to introduce early feeding because of concern about postoperative vomiting. This study aimed to clarify the effects of early versus later feeding after laparoscopic pyloromyotomy on postoperative vomiting, time required to reach full oral feeding, hospital stay, and follow-up evaluation. METHODS: During the period from October 1993 through March 2002, 185 infants underwent laparoscopic pyloromyotomy for HP

Long-term need and potential for withdrawal of enteral feeding in children with chronic kidney disease stage 5D or 5T.

BACKGROUND: Children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 5 may require long-term enteral tube feeding. However, the factors associated with the need for tube feeding and the potential for its withdrawal are unclear. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective cohort study included patients with CKD stage 5D or 5T aged <18 years between 2004 and 2021. We evaluated data on the initiation of enteral tube feeding and its associated factors, the potential and timing of the withdrawal of enteral tube feeding, and improvements in feeding difficulties before and after kidney transplantation. Diversity of risk of mother-to-child HIV-1 transmission according to feeding practices, CD4 cell count, and haemoglobin concentration in a South African cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the probabilities of intrapartum and postpartum HIV-1 mother-to-child-transmission according to various feeding practices (formula feeding, exclusive breastfeeding, or mixed-feeding) and to other mother and infant covariates. METHODS: We used the promotion time model extended to multiple exposures to study the probability of infection attributable to each transmission occasion. Blood samples from 551 infants from Durban (South Africa) born to HIV-1 positive untreated mothers between 1995 and 1998 were sequentially tested until 15 months. RESULTS: The probability of inf
