Schwertmannite (Sch) is an iron-hydroxysulfate mineral commonly found in acid mine drainage contaminated environment. The transformation mechanism of Sch mediated by pure cultured iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) or sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) has been studied. However, FeRB and SRB widely coexist in the environment, the mechanism of Sch transformation by the consortia of FeRB and SRB is still unclear. This study investigated the Sch reduction by co-cultured Shewanella oneidensis (FeRB) and Desulfosporosinus meridiei (SRB). The results showed that co-culture of FeRB and SRB could accelerate t

Resistance to chemotherapy is a current clinical problem, especially in the treatment of microbial infections and cancer. One strategy to overcome this is to make new derivatives of existing drugs by conjugation to organometallic fragments, either by an appropriate linker, or by direct coordination of the drug to a metal. We illustrate this with examples of conjugated organometallic metallocene sandwich and half-sandwich complexes, RuII and OsII arene, and RhIII and IrIII cyclopentadienyl half-sandwich complexes. Ferrocene conjugates are particularly promising. The ferrocene-chloroquine conjug

Aqueous Fe(II) reacts with Fe(III) oxides by coupled electron transfer and atom exchange (ETAE) resulting in mineral recrystallization, contaminant reduction, and trace element cycling. Previous studies of Fe(II)-Fe(III) ETAE have explored the reactivity of either pure iron oxide phases or those containing small quantities of soluble trace elements. Naturally occurring iron oxides, however, contain substantial quantities of insoluble impurities (e.g., Al) which are known to affect the chemical properties of such minerals. Here we explore the effect of Al(III), Cr(III), and Sn(IV) substitution

Electron transfer from zerovalent iron (Fe0) to targeted contaminants is affected by initial Fe0 composition, the oxides formed during corrosion, and surrounding electrolytes. We previously observed enhanced metolachlor destruction by Fe0 when iron or aluminum salts were present in the aqueous matrix and Eh/pH conditions favored formation of green rusts. To understand these enhanced destruction rates, we characterized changes in Fe0 composition during treatment of metolachlor with and without iron and aluminum salts. Raman microspectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that the iron s

Ferroptosis is a regulated form of cell death implicated in a wide range of pathological conditions. Iron-dependent lipid peroxidation driven by reactive oxygen species is a central feature. Because ferroptosis contributes to oxidative stress-induced tissue injury, including ischemia-reperfusion damage and neurodegenerative disorders, the suppression of this process has attracted considerable interest. Through a phenotypic screen of a unique chemical compound library from the University of Osaka, we identified a series of polycyclic quinone compounds containing a six-membered silacycle that ex

Extremely acidophilic iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and archaea are used in the processing of different sulfide ores and concentrates (biohydrometallurgical technologies); therefore, studying their metabolic pathways and regulation is an urgent task. Thus, the goal of this work was to compare differential gene expression in the thermoacidophilic archaeal strain, representative of the genus Acidiplasma, a predominant microbial group in bioleach reactors, during growth in the presence of ferrous iron and elemental sulfur as well as pyrite and arsenopyrite, which are the most widespread sul

From several presumably pure cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, we isolated a pair of stable phenotypes. One was a strict autotroph utilizing sulfur or ferrous iron as the energy source and unable to utilize glucose; the other phenotype was an acidophilic obligate heterotroph capable of utilizing glucose but not sulfur or ferrous iron. The acidophilic obligate heterotroph not only was encountered in cultures of T. ferrooxidans, but also was isolated with glucose-mineral salts medium, pH 2.0, directly from coal refuse. By means of deoxyribonucleic acid homology, we have demonstrated that th

Incidence of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to para-phenylenediamine (PPD)/paratoluenediamine (PTD) hair dyes is increasing. Hair dyes utilizing gallic acid (GA) may be a safe alternative. However, pretesting is recommended. We investigated the contact sensitivity to ingredients of a dye product; GA, monoethanolamine thioglycolate (MT), l-cystein and ferrous sulfate, and an appropriate pretest method in 31 patients reactive to PPD and/or PTD. An open test was performed with the test dye following the patch test. Subsequently, a use test was performed twice, with a 4-week interval. One subje

Lactoperoxidase-catalyzed H2O2 metabolism proceeds through one of three different pathways, depending on the nature and the concentration of the second substrate as an e- donor and/or on pH conditions. In the lactoperoxidase (LPO)-H2O2 system, at low H2O2 concentrations and/or alkaline conditions the peroxidatic cycle involves ferric LPO----compound I----compound II----ferric LPO conversion, whereas high H2O2 concentrations and/or acidic conditions favor the ferric LPO----compound I----compound II----compound III----ferrous LPO----ferric LPO pathway. The compound III/ferroperoxidase states are

Zero valent iron (ZVI), the primary reactive material in several permeable reactive barriers, is often oxidized to ferrous or ferric iron, resulting in decreased reactivity with time. Iron reducing bacteria can reconvert the ferric iron to its ferrous form, prolonging the reduction of chlorinated organic contaminants. In this study, the reduction of Fe(II,III) oxide and Fe(III) oxide by a strain of iron reducing bacteria of the group Shewanella alga BrY(S. alga BrY) was observed in both aqueous and solid phases. S. alga BrY preferentially reduced dissolved ferric iron over the solid ferric iro

Pre-anemic iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are the most common health conditions. They are mostly caused by blood loss and/or inadequate dietary iron absorption and are managed with iron replacement therapy. The goal of iron replacement therapy is to correct anemia and replenish iron stores. In most patients, oral iron is typically the first choice for treatment due to its ease of use, over-the-counter availability, and low cost of most common formulations. Ferrous sulfate remains the gold standard for oral iron therapy, but alternative formulations have also been developed. Effecti

Arsenic (As)-immobilizing iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) minerals (AFMM) represent potential As sinks in As-enriched groundwater environments. The process and mechanisms governing As bio-leaching from AFMM through interaction with reducing bacteria, however, remain poorly delineated. This study examined the transformation and release of As from AFMM with varying Mn/Fe molar ratios (0:1, 1:5, 1:3, and 1:1) in the presence of As(V)-reducing bacteria specifically Shewanella putrefaciens CN32. Notably, strain CN32 significantly facilitated the bio-reduction of As(V), Fe(III), and Mn(IV) in AFMM. In syst

The Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle is an important driving force for dissolution and transformation of jarosite. Divalent heavy metals usually coexist with jarosite; however, their effects on Fe(II)-induced jarosite transformation and different repartitioning behavior during mineral dissolution-recrystallization are still unclear. Here, we investigated Fe(II)-induced (1 mM Fe(II)) jarosite conversion in the presence of Cd(II), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) (denoted as Me(II), 1 mM), respectively, under anaerobic condition at neutral pH. The results showed that all co-existing Me(II) retarded Fe(II)-

Fe(II) is of great importance in iron-based advanced oxidation processes. However, traditional methods to maintain Fe(II) concentration, such as the addition of chelating agents or reducing agents, may lead to an increase in chemical oxygen demand of secondary pollution. Therefore, in this study, iron sulfides, namely ferrous sulfide (FeS), pyrite (FeS2), and sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI), were applied for not only the regeneration of Fe(II) but also the direct dissolution of Fe(II). Nanoscale calcium peroxide (nCaO2) was synthesized and used as the oxidant. The removal of 1,2

Fe(II) and Mn(II) are abundant in groundwater and require operationally simple and efficient method to remove in drinking water treatment. The rapid oxidation of Mn(II) is essential in water treatment. This study investigates the efficiency of Mn(II) oxidation by free chlorine in the presence of Fe(II). The results demonstrate that the presence of Fe(II) significantly accelerates the oxidation rate of Mn(II) by free chlorine under neutral and alkaline conditions. The rapid oxidation of Fe(II) by free chlorine and the presence of Mn(II) promote the formation of in situ Mn(II)-doped ferrihydrite

Although PO43- is commonly found in association with iron (oxyhydr)oxide, the effect of PO43- on ferrihydrite reduction, mineralogical transformation, and associated As behavior in sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB)-rich environments remains unclear. In this study, batch experiments, together with geochemical, mineralogical, and biological analyses, were conducted to elucidate these processes. The results showed that SRB can reduce ferrihydrite via direct and indirect processes, and PO43- promoted ferrihydrite reduction by supporting SRB growth at low and medium PO43- loadings. However, at high l

The mineralogy and oxidation state of aerosol iron (Fe) play important roles in controlling aerosol Fe solubility and consequent bioavailability in seawater. In this study, the spatial variability of Fe mineralogy and oxidation states in aerosols collected during the US GEOTRACES Western Arctic cruise (GN01) were determined using synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Both Fe(II) minerals (biotite, ilmenite) and Fe(III) minerals (ferrihydrite, hematite, Fe(III) phosphate) were found in these samples. However, aerosol Fe mineralogy and solubility observed d

In this work, FeS supported SBA-15 mesoporous silica catalyst (FeS@SBA-15) was synthesized successfully, characterized and first applied to persulfate (PS) activation for the degradation of imidacloprid in wastewater. The as-prepared 3.5-FeS@SBA-15 presented an impressive imidacloprid removal efficiency of 93.1% and reaction stoichiometric efficiency (RSE) of 1.82% after 5 min, ascribed to the synergetic effects of improved FeS dispersion and abundant surface sites by SBA-15. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and quenching experiments proved that both SO4·- and ·OH were produced in FeS@S

Manganese (Mn) oxides are extensively used to oxidize As(III) present in ground, drinking, and waste waters to the less toxic and more easily removable As(V). The common presence of multiple other cations in natural waters, and more especially of redox-sensitive ones such as Fe2+, may however significantly hamper As(III) oxidation and its subsequent removal. The present work investigates experimentally the influence of Mn(III) chelating agents on As(III) oxidation process in such environmentally relevant complex systems. Specifically, the influence of sodium pyrophosphate (PP), an efficient Mn
