Incidence, economic burden, and treatment of acute respiratory tract infection in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipients using real world data in Japan: a retrospective claims data analysis.

AIMS: Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are common in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients, however, data is limited regarding epidemiology and economic burden of ARTI in HSCT recipients in Japan. We evaluated the incidence of ARTI in HSCT recipients, associated economic burden, and ARTI-related treatments post-HSCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients receiving HSCT between July 2017 and December 2018, and those enrolled in the JMDC Claims Database for ≥6 months before index month (month when latest medical procedure code of HSCT recorded) were included. The outcome

Financial Strain, Mental Illness, and Homelessness: Results From a National Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that adults with severe mental illness have lower income and employment than adults without severe mental illness. Further, mental illness has been identified as a risk factor for homelessness. However, little research has investigated the interrelationships between financial strain, mental illness, and homelessness. It is unknown whether or to what extent financial strain mediates the association between mental illness and subsequent homelessness. METHODS: This study examined financial strain and severe mental illness (psychotic, bipolar, and depressive disorde

Effect of Chronic Pediatric Heart Conditions on Family Dynamics in Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pediatric heart diseases significantly affect family dynamics, therefore affecting caregivers' emotional, financial, and social spheres of life. Understanding how healthcare systems and family structures differ in Saudi Arabia helps us improve support systems since they directly affect families. This study investigated how chronic pediatric cardiac diseases affected family dynamics and what elements supported caregivers' stress and coping strategies. METHODS: Between February and March 2025, a cross-sectional survey was conducted at King Fahad Medical City (KFMC), Riyadh

Psychosocial well-being among veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Concurrent posttraumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder (PTSD/SUD) in U.S. military veterans represents an urgent public health issue associated with significant clinical challenges. Although previous research has shown that veterans with PTSD/SUD endorse more psychosocial risk factors and fewer protective factors than veterans with neither or only one of these disorders, no study has applied a comprehensive framework to characterize the vocational, financial, and social well-being of veterans with PTSD/SUD. Furthermore, it is not fully known how well-being among veteran

Financial toxicity and distress among prostate cancer patients in Lebanon: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity is a major component of the cancer experience. Prostate cancer often requires prolonged treatment and follow-up, increasing financial and psychological burden. Lebanon's economic crisis has disrupted health-care financing and insurance coverage, potentially worsening these burdens. This study evaluated financial toxicity among male patients with prostate cancer in Lebanon and its relationship with psychological distress. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional telephone survey of adult males (≥18 years) with confirmed prostate cancer receiving active treatment o

The Impact of Dementia Caregiving on the Health of the Spousal Caregiver.

Dementia caregiving represents a major public health challenge, with spousal caregivers assuming the greatest burden. Spouses, themselves typically older adults, provide high intensity, long-term, and largely unpaid care across all stages of cognitive decline. Despite their central role in dementia care, the health consequences experienced by spousal caregivers remain insufficiently characterized in the literature and inadequately addressed in clinical and public health practice. This structured narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the multidimensional impact of dementia caregiving

Financial toxicity among breast cancer survivors receiving care during the pandemic.

PURPOSE: To appraise financial toxicity (FT) among women receiving care for breast cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic and determine sociodemographic, clinical, psychosocial, and care-disruption factors linked to greater financial hardship. METHODS: Forty-eight survivors (mean age = 45.3 ± 10.9 years; 42% Black, 42% non-Hispanic White, 17% Hispanic/Latina) completed an online survey. FT was measured with the COST-FACIT. Additional instruments assessed perceived stress (PSS-10), coping (Brief-COPE), self-efficacy (CBI-B), social isolation (PROMIS-SF-4a), health-related quality of life (FACT-B)

Caregiver burden in informal caregivers of cardiac patients: a mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers, frequently family members or close acquaintances, offer uncompensated care and support to individuals with cardiovascular diseases, confronting diverse challenges such as mental stress, financial strain, and the overall burden of care. Addressing these challenges is vital for both caregivers and patients. This systematic review seeks to identify the factors contributing to caregiver burden among informal caregivers of cardiovascular patients. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, and Science Direct were searched from 2000 until July 2023, followin

Exploring Loneliness, Social Factors, and Clinical Correlates of C-reactive Protein in African American Breast Cancer Survivors.

IMPORTANCE: African American women experience disproportionately high breast cancer morbidity and mortality, including early onset, more aggressive tumor subtypes, and poorer survival outcomes. Chronic psychosocial stress has been shown to dysregulate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathetic nervous system activity, promoting low-grade systemic inflammation and altering immune signaling within the tumor microenvironment. However, few studies have examined how stress-related psychosocial factors, such as loneliness, contribute to inflammatory processes in African American breast canc

Examination of Longitudinal Interdependence Between Financial Toxicity and Depressive Symptoms in Black Women With Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity, or the negative economic effect of cancer treatment, has been cross-sectionally associated with poorer psychosocial outcomes in patients with breast cancer. Few studies have examined financial toxicity longitudinally or in Black women with cancer in particular. METHODS: Black women with non-metastatic breast cancer enrolled in this prospective study within 2 months of diagnosis. Participants completed the Comprehensive Score for Financial Toxicity (COST) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) at baseline, 2 months, 4 months, and 18 months.

Housing and utility hardship among adults with gastrointestinal cancer: differences by housing tenure and employment status.

BACKGROUND: Financial hardship is common in cancer care and may extend beyond medical costs to threaten basic needs, such as housing and utilities. Nationally representative data comparing the inability to pay mortgage, rent, or utility bills and threatened utility shutoff among adults with gastrointestinal (GI) cancer versus adults without GI cancer are limited. METHODS: We analyzed 2022 to 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data for adults aged ≥18 years. GI cancer history and treatment status were identified using Cancer Survivorship Module items and were categorized as no GI

Financial toxicity among gastric and pancreatic cancer survivors in India and its impact on quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity (FT) associated with cancer treatment has emerged as a critical issue impacting cancer patients globally. The absence of comprehensive research on FT among gastric and pancreatic cancer survivors in India leaves a gap in understanding the full spectrum of economic burdens and challenges faced by them. This study addresses this gap by examining the factors associated with FT and its impact on the quality of life for gastric and pancreatic cancer survivors. METHODS: Data for this study were collected from April to September 2024 at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Mu

Total treatment interval and quality of life of women living with breast cancer in Ethiopia: the mediating role of financial toxicity.

PURPOSE: Delays in breast cancer care are common in low-resource settings and may adversely affect patients’ quality of life (QoL). Prolonged total treatment interval (TTI) can also impose substantial financial hardship. This study aimed to get insights into the potential mechanisms of how prolonged treatment interval impacts QoL through a mediation model and explore the mediating role of financial toxicity (FT) among Ethiopian women with breast cancer. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 458 women with histologically confirmed breast cancer receiving treatment at three oncolo

Financial toxicity in breast cancer patients during radiotherapy - A German multicenter analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Financial toxicity, defined as the financial burden and distress caused by cancer treatment, has emerged as a critical issue in oncology care. While most research originates from the U.S., data from countries with publicly funded healthcare systems remain limited, particularly regarding breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. This study investigates financial toxicity in radiation-treated breast cancer patients in the German healthcare system. METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted with 279 breast cancer patients from 11 certified Germa

Financial toxicity questionnaire (FIT): development and validation of the italian version (FITALY) in head and neck cancer patients undergoing multimodal curative treatment.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity from cancer treatments is rising as an important patient-reported outcome. Its relevance was first assessed in the context of privately financed healthcare system, where the financial hardship caused by out-of-pocket payments negatively affects survival, while fewer evidence exists on its role in countries where care is financed by the public health care system. Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) patients face an increased risk for financial toxicity due to multimodal treatment and relevant out of pocket costs. The aim of this study was to develop and validate an Italian

Epidemiology and economic burden of Von Hippel-Lindau Disease-associated central nervous system hemangioblastomas and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors in the United States.

BACKGROUND: To date, real-world evidence around the clinical and economic burden related to von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is limited. Therefore, this study characterized the prevalence, healthcare resource utilization (HRU), and economic burden of von Hippel-Lindau-associated central nervous system hemangioblastoma (VHL-CNS-Hb) and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (VHL-pNET) in the United States (US). METHODS: Patients with VHL-CNS-Hb or VHL-pNET were identified from Optum's de-identified Clinformatics® Data Mart Database (2007-2020) and matched 1:5 to control patients without VHL disease o

Financial Burden of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

Given the increasing population eligible for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), resource utilization has become an important focus in this setting. We aimed to estimate the change in the financial burden of TAVI therapy over 2 different periods. A probabilistic Markov model was developed to estimate the cost consequences of increased center experience and the introduction of newer-generation TAVI devices compared with an earlier TAVI period in a cohort of 6,000 patients. The transition probabilities and hospitalization costs were retrieved from the OBSERVANT (Observational Study o
