Fate of the inhaled smoke particles from fire scenes in the nasal airway of a realistic firefighter: A simulation study.

Understanding the inhalation, transport and deposition of smoke particles during fire missions are important to evaluating the health risks for firefighters. In this study, measurements from Underwriters Laboratories' large-scale fire experiments on smoke particle size distribution and concentration in three residential fire scenes were incorporated into models to investigate the fate of inhaled toxic ultrafine particulates in a realistic firefighter nasal cavity model. Deposition equations were developed, and the actual particle dosimetry (in mass, number and surface area) was evaluated. A st…

Is rumination only negative? Effects of belief in a just world on PTSD symptoms in firefighters: a moderated mediation model.

OBJECTIVE: Belief in a just world (BJW) is correlated with an individual's psychological experience in the face of disaster. However, the association between BJW and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in firefighters remains unclear. Moreover, the extent to which the association between BJW and PTSD is mediated by resilience and moderated by rumination has yet to be determined. This study investigated potential strategies for mitigating PTSD symptoms in firefighters from the cognitive perspective of belief and examined the relationship among BJW, resilience, PTSD symptoms, and rumination. …

Physiological Impacts of Cold Conditions during Moderate Intensity Activity while Wearing Firefighter Protective Clothing.

INTRODUCTION: Thermal protective clothing (TPC) protects firefighters from physical threats associated with structural firefighting. However, it also limits the release of body heat generated, which can result in hyperthermia and dehydration. Despite the prevalence of winter structure fires in the United States, there is a paucity of cold-weather firefighting research. STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study documented physiological responses to moderate-intensity exercise in a cold environment while wearing TPC with the hypothesis that while exercising in firefighting TPC, a cold environment would maint…

The wildland firefighter exposure and health effect (WFFEHE) study: cohort characteristics and health behavior changes in context.

OBJECTIVES: Work is an under-recognized social determinant of health. There is limited research describing US wildland firefighter (WFF) workforce demographics or how to work associates with WFF health behaviors. In this study researchers characterized a WFF cohort and tested hypotheses that WFFs used tobacco, alcohol, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) differently over the course of the fire season and that different fire crews may exhibit different behavior patterns. METHODS: Researchers collected data in the field with 6 WFF crews during 2 consecutive fire seasons (2018 and 2019). WFF cr

Enhancing Safety and Efficiency in Firefighting Operations via Deep Learning and Temperature Forecasting Modeling in Autonomous Unit.

Firefighters face numerous challenges when entering burning structures to rescue trapped victims, assess the conditions of a residential structure, and extinguish the fire as quickly as possible. These challenges include extreme temperatures, smoke, toxic gases, explosions, and falling objects, which can hinder their efficiency and pose risks to their safety. Accurate information and data about the burning site can help firefighters make informed decisions about their duties and determine when it is safe to enter and evacuate, reducing the likelihood of casualties. This research presents unsup…

Characterization of inhalation exposures at a wildfire incident during the Wildland Firefighter Exposure and Health Effects (WFFEHE) Study.

Wildland firefighters (WFFs) are exposed to many inhalation hazards working in the wildland fire environment. To assess occupational exposures and acute and subacute health effects among WFFs, the wildland firefighter exposure and health effects study collected data for a 2-year repeated measures study. This manuscript describes the exposure assessment from one Interagency Hotshot Crew (N = 19) conducted at a wildfire incident. Exposures to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene isomers, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and naphthalene were measured through personal air sampling each work shift. Bi…

Exposure to a firefighting overhaul environment without respiratory protection increases immune dysregulation and lung disease risk.

Firefighting activities appear to increase the risk of acute and chronic lung disease, including malignancy. While self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA) mitigate exposures to inhalable asphyxiates and carcinogens, firefighters frequently remove SCBA during overhaul when the firegrounds appear clear of visible smoke. Using a mouse model of overhaul without airway protection, the impact of fireground environment exposure on lung gene expression was assessed to identify transcripts potentially critical to firefighter-related chronic pulmonary illnesses. Lung tissue was collected 2 hrs post-…

Nonlinear dose-response relationships between psychological and behavioral factors and training quality among firefighters: a restricted cubic spline analysis.

BACKGROUND: Firefighters are exposed to multiple occupational health risks, including physical fatigue, psychological stress, and traumatic events. Although several psychological and behavioral factors have been identified as potential determinants of training quality, most prior studies assumed linear associations, which may not fully capture the true functional relationships. This study aimed to examine whether nonlinear dose-response relationships exist between six key psychological and behavioral factors and daily training quality among firefighters, and to identify inflection points and t…

A Cross-Sectional Evaluation of City Firefighters' Exposure to Potentially Traumatic Events During Opioid Overdose Responses and Mental Health.

Firefighters often serve as emergency medical services providers and face repeated exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) while participating in opioid overdose responses (OORs), which may impact their mental health. A survey of 173 firefighters who had participated in an OOR in the previous 6 months was used to assess exposure to PTEs during such events, job stress, mental health symptoms, and resources used to address mental health symptoms. Most firefighters (97%) reported experiencing one or more PTEs while responding to an opioid overdose in the past 6 months. Associations betwee…
